Senior and less active dogs may be fed a reduced amount, depending on the dog's weight and activity level. Grain free diets may not be suitable for all dogs. If you have any dietary concerns, please consult with your veterinarian.
The Daily Feeding Guidelines are a good starting point on the amount of food to be fed on a daily basis. Individual pets may require more or less food. Always provide plenty of fresh water.
When changing to CANIDAE® Grain Free PURE Ancestral™ Fish Formula, some dogs may do better by making a gradual transition over 7-10 days. Start with 25% of the new food mixed with 75% of the previous diet and gradually increase the new while decreasing the previous until the transition is complete.
CANIDAE® Grain Free PURE Ancestral™ Fish Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Meals That Prioritize Protein
Full of the rich animal protein your dog needs, CANIDAE Grain Free PURE Ancestral formulas are always made with ample amounts of fish, poultry, game or red meat, then coated with freeze-dried raw protein for added flavor. Each 20-pound bag contains up to 17 pounds of animal protein, rounded with whole vegetables. The result is a meal that is similar to what your dog's ancestors ate and thrived on.
Raw Coated to Tempt Every Pup
Savory pieces of kibble become even more delicious when they're coated with raw meat, fish or poultry. Freeze-dried for optimal flavor and texture, a burst of raw adds a little something special into every bite. Not only does it enhance the protein in your pup's meal, but few dogs can resist the delicious aroma and flavor of raw—so you can entice even your pickiest pal.

Packed with Protein to Feed Their Instincts
With a variety of regionally sourced proteins in every complete and balanced formula, CANIDAE Grain Free PURE Ancestral formulas feeds your dog's natural instincts with every bowl. Real animal protein nourishes their muscles and fuels their boundless energy, so you know your active pup is getting the nutrition he needs and the flavors he craves.
Regionally Sourced Ingredients You Can Trust
Each formula is made with a variety of ranch-raised, farm-raised, fresh or wild-caught ingredients, to create wholesome, responsibly raised meals your dog will love. Vegetables, legumes and herbs are locally sourced, too, which means your dog's bowl will always be packed with sustainable nutrition you can be proud to serve.

Didn’t Work For Our AmStaff
By Grover on Dec 27, 2020
I was feeding our AmStaff the Canidae GF Salmon & Sweet Potato for over a year until he seemed to start loosing interest, and his poops became regularly soft... I thought this would be a higher quality alternative, but I was wrong! Our boy has been very interested in this food daily, but has thrown it up (partially digested) on three separate occasions now, so we’re calling it quits! At first we thought we didn’t transition long enough, but he’s been eating it for over 2 weeks at this point, and threw up all of it onto his bed at 10:30pm last night (after 6:30pm dinner!) Not sure if Canidae is making changes or what but we’re switching brands now. Would not recommend for a sensitive tummy I was feeding our AmStaff the Canidae GF Salmon & Sweet Potato for over a year until he seemed to start loosing interest, and his poops became regularly soft... Great treat and food topper!
By poodlez on Dec 8, 2020 Top 250 Contributor
When I put my 65# boy through his paces every day, he gets a treat for each command done right. Most of his treats are soft, but I can also use a few pieces of his hard food for a command completed well, and now I am using these that way. I feed his meals in at least a cup of water, and after he's lapped up the moisture, I throw about an eighth cup of these on top of his food and he goes right for them. I am considering adjusting his diet to make this food a half of his daily meals.

This is a pretty high value treat for my dog!!!!!
By sky68 on Dec 11, 2020
I was hoping that this (more expensive than I usually would buy) kibble would act more like a treat for training for my dog than the food I put in the bowl. Well, he loves it! So this will last a very long time as I mix in other stuff for training treats like small pieces of hot dog (verrrrrrry high value!) , old cheese, pieces of apple, etc.

Sad to see it go
By KristinC on Nov 24, 2020
It took me a long time to find a quality food that both of my dogs do well on. This was it! My one dog stopped vomiting in the morning and both had shiny coats and healthy stools. I loved that it didn’t have peas and the first five ingredients were actual meat and meal instead of fillers. I was just told they are discontinuing the Pure Ancestral line. I rotate foods and always come back to this one so I am disappointed that it will not longer be available.

My dogs love Canidae Ancestral Fish Dry Dog Food
By Mssmith on Sep 17, 2020
One of my dogs has developed allergies to eight foods, mostly starches. I searched for a food that everyone would eat but that didn't contain those ingredients. Canidae was on the list and was one of the first dry dog foods I had fed my first dogs years ago. I went with it again, and am so glad I did. Both my lab mix and my pittie eat it like it's a treat (actually I do use it as treats on walks) and the lab mix is no longer scratching and licking himself raw.

The only kibble I’ll buy!
By Shelby on Aug 25, 2020
My yorkies both had terrible food allergies when they were younger. I couldn’t figure out what was causing them to itch and their skin to be red and inflamed for so long but after some research I realized that cheap fillers in dog food could be the issue. Even some proteins, which are used too much in dog food, could become an allergy if all your dog eats is beef or chicken. After a lot of searching, I found this particular kind of kibble. It doesn’t have any grains! There are a lot of vegetables that are also questionable. Peas, for example, are known to cause kidney stones in cats and may not be good for your dogs either so I just steer clear of it. Potatoes also may lead to cardiac issues, My yorkies both had terrible food allergies when they were younger.
