Is 'Natural Flavors' a type or precursor of MSG?
Answer by ChewyMar 21, 2019
The Natural Flavors in pet food is a proprietary blend derived from main protein source of the food. This Canidae doesn't preserve their dry pet foods using substances like ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT, or propylene glycol. Instead, they use mixed tocopherols (a source of vitamin E). They leave out substances like MSG, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup to artificially flavor their foods.

This would seem to have a lot of carbohydrates, is this a correct assumption?
Answer by ChewyDec 10, 2017
The PURE Sea with Salmon has 35% carbohydrate content.

Do all of the ingredients come from the USA
Answer by ChewySep 03, 2020
Canidae formulas are made in the USA. They use ingredients from the US and quality ingredients from around the world. From fresh bison like those found on the grasslands of Wyoming, fresh lamb from places like Colorado, fresh salmon and trout from the Pacific Northwest, to fresh produce from all across the Heartland, and other quality ingredients from around the world. They also source ingredients such as duck meal from France and lamb meal from New Zealand.

What's the difference between the ancestral diet on and this one? I've been feeding my kitten the ancestral but was think about going to a bigger bag of the same brand. he's still pretty hyper so I assume the more carbs the better for him to burn?
Answer by ChewyJul 16, 2019
The CANIDAE Grain-Free Limited Ingredient Diet PURE Sea recipe has whole foods and nutrients to support cats with a sensitive digestion.

I don't know how to feel about this...

My cats, especially my boy has never really been picky but with this food they have been extremely picky and ate about half the amount they used to so they slowly started losing weight which wasn't a problem at first because my boy was kinda overweight so it was good. Plus this was like 1 of only 4 or 5 different foods they can have because my boy is allergic to chicken. But anyways after a month or so my boy started showing some neurological issues and we thought it was an ear infection or vestibular disease which would go away on its own in a couple weeks but after treating the ears and no improvement and eventually dry skin and hair loss after 3 or 4 months of this food we figured there must be a nutritional deficit coming from the food so we switched foods and got him on a multivitamin and although he isn't 100% back to himself he is definitely improving over the last 2 weeks. I really hate bashing on companies but this brand needs to reevaluate their nutritional content and do better because I thought I was going to lose my precious boy and I know this had something to do with that.

My cat loves it

My cat has been on this since he was a couple months old - I’ve had zero issues with him not wanting to eat it like other reviews. I’m on bag 3 of this, haven’t noticed any quality or smell change, and my boy is always excited to eat.

Cat hates it

Cat hates it. Won't even eat it. Took one sniff, gave me an evil look and walked away. Tried mixing it in with her food gradually....nope.

Cats hated it

My 4 cats all in their teens have never turned away from their food bowls. These products from Canidae sat in their bowls for 3 days untouched. I even tried mixing with another brand of dry and somehow they picked around it. I'm going to give it to someone for the ferals but I have a feeling they won't need it either. Tried it on sale but won't do that again

None of my 6 will eat it and they aren't picky!

I saw this on sale and even though many of the reviews were unfavorable, I thought I would at least try it since all my cats aren't very picky about dry food... my mistake. I got a bag of this and the chicken flavor. When I first opened it, my cat who LOVES dry food wanted to try it, but to my surprise, he only ate a couple of bites and left the rest, even though he usually scarfs down any freshly opened dry food. None of my other cats seemed interested in the newly poured food either, which is rare. I feed 6 cats (5 indoor/outdoor, 1 outdoor feral) and this barely gets touched by all. The bowls with this food in it only get eaten in small amounts if I put other dry food on top or mixed in, but even then, the inside bowls have still been sitting around for like 3 or 4 days. I've only ever seen them do this with a really low-quality, super cheap store brand I tried, but I'm really surprised and disappointed that they have the same reaction to this brand that seems good in terms of ingredients. They haven't tried the chicken yet, but I don't have much hope for it based on their reaction to this one. I really wish I had just gotten one bag... However, I will give it to a friend that feeds a colony of a dozen ferals. Also, this is not a comment Chewy, only the product. I had a problem with an out of stock item in my order, but Chewy customer service resolved it very well.

Cats Do Not Like!

I thought this "natural" food would be great for my sickly kitty and her siblings, but turns out it was just a big waste of $25 because it's been sitting there in their bowl for a week untouched and they beg me for wet food every time I come home rather than eating their kibble. Out of three cats, not one of them will eat it. It smells weird too. I would not recommend.

Cats are mad at me

I patiently mixed this with my cats' kitten food in an attempt to make a gradual shift. They ate it grudgingly at first. However, they dislike this food so much that they've now just stopped eating the mixture. They just look at their bowl and cry. It smells strongly fishy, which I thought they'd like. Guess not. The bag arrived with a small hole in it; maybe it's stale and that's why they won't eat it?

My cats were not enthused

I have 6 cats. Most of them are not finicky with food, but they were very reluctant to eat this food - so reluctant that they ripped into a bag of CORE rather than wait for me to cycle it out. It was our first time trying this brand and we will not be returning to it in the future. There were no digestion issues, simply a strong disinterest in the flavor.

My cats hated it

My cats, who eat practically anything, absolutely refused to touch this food. It was a hunger strike. Sadly I got a second bag in an autoship.

he didn't care for it

I ordered this for a foster that has been allergy tested and is allergic to most all common cat food ingredients. This food was on the recommended list so we tried it, the kitty didn't care for it and unfortunately what he did eat he couldn't keep down. I give it four stars because it seems to have good ingredients and is a very reasonable price, as far as limited ingredient foods go, but it just didn't work out in our case.
