Feeding Instructions

For herbivores (rabbits, guinea pigs & chinchillas): Provide your herbivore with a large quantity of clean, dry hay for eating, nesting and foraging each day. Remove any soiled or wet hay promptly.

For omnivores (hamster, gerbils, mice & rats): Omnivores may be given a small handful of hay once a week for nesting and enrichment. Hay should be given in addition to a primary animal diet.

Premium Quality Hay

Carefresh sources hay from sustainable suppliers, so that each harvested crop will meet the quality standards your pet deserves. Every batch is thoroughly inspected and carefully hand-packed, ensuring optimum freshness, minimal dust and a clean, natural scent.

Essential High Fiber

Veterinarians often recommend hay for small pets, to promote a healthy digestive system and to nurture natural chewing behaviors. Hay can provide necessary wear and tear on their teeth and also help with weight control.

They Are What They Eat

Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas should have unlimited access to pure and natural timothy hay every day. A diet consisting of 75% hay and 20% fortified food in a stabilized form is considered ideal, with all-natural treats like strawberries or apples given occasionally as a snack. Dark leafy greens can be a great source of additional vitamins and minerals, too.

The Sweet Smell of Hay

The second cutting of timothy hay, harvested at the peak of maturity, is usually considered the hay of choice for healthy adult rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. It has nutrients in proper proportions for optimal small animal health, with the high fiber and lower protein and calcium levels your little pet needs to thrive. She’s also sure to love the soft, leafy texture and sweet aroma!

Acting Natural

Hay encourages healthy natural behaviors like foraging and grazing, which can play an important role in discouraging boredom, encouraging activity and promoting a sense of security. Even pets like hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats may enjoy a small amount of hay each week for nesting and enrichment, just be sure not to use it as their primary source of food.

My rabbit and I recommend this hay!

By Mary on Aug 23, 2021

I've used a different brand of hay for years, but recently I tried this brand. It smells noticeably stronger and fresher, and it is easy to grab handfuls out of the bag. My other brand was not so easy to do that. My rabbit likes it just fine, and the price is good, so I will continue to buy the Carefresh. I only recently realized that timothy hay is intended for older rabbits, and alfalfa hay is intended for younger ones because of its high calcium levels. I'm now paying more attention to the composition of the pellets too and avoiding some of the less expensive pellets because they are made of wheat and alfalfa meal and other stuff that may not actually be as good as a simple timothy-based I've used a different brand of hay for years, but recently I tried this brand. Satisfactory product

By KellyH on May 28, 2021

For this hay, it was my first time trying this brand. It did have alot of dust and very small miniscule pieces that just made a mess in the cage There was also alot of very sharp pieces as well. My 4 guinea pigs did like it but I only used this brand hay as a "treat". Then after they eat what they want out of it, I throw out the sharp edges pieces that they left behind because we don't need any eye hay poke emergencies. The other hay that I use for them to borrow in and also munch on is from Farmer Dave's Pet Supply. That in fact is the best hay that you will get your money's worth. Google it and check it out. I will try the Carefresh hay one more time and if it is not any better I will not buy For this hay, it was my first time trying this brand. We Absolutely Love This!

By Keirsten on Jun 18, 2021

When we got the hay in the mail it had such an amazing fresh Timothy hay smell. The hay wasn’t too hard or too soft it was just right. My bunnies did take a couple days to get use to the new hay but they have been loving it ever since. Also love how there’s more than one size! Also very affordable!

    My bunny loves it!

By Belle on May 20, 2021

My bunny is quite a picky hay eater and loves Orchard Grass more but when I gave this a try, he actually went for it and ate much more than our previous Timothy hay! The quality is very good, full of leafy and crunchy stems, not a lot of dust (which is expected in any hay) and comes fully packed. I think it’s important to keep changing types and maybe even brands to do they don’t get bored but I will definitely repurchase this!

    Moldy smell

By Claire on May 13, 2021

Though the hay looked pretty decent, overall—there were a few, very-coarse, pale pieces with black speckle mold—there was a pervasive, faint moldy smell to the hay. I gave the bunny-loves a chance to eat a couple pieces of the hay that looked good and smelled decent, but they didn’t go for it (their noses being more discerning than mine, no doubt). I wasn’t willing to risk it, anyway, so it seemed we were all on the same page. Really disappointed.

    Need More Longer Strands

By Jackie on Jun 2, 2021

The hay was good - smelled fresh, good amount of seed heads. Just wish they hadn’t chopped up so much of the hay into 3 to 4 inches! My guinea pigs need and prefer long strand hay. Also, there were a lot of hard pieces among the longer strands - need some more softer hay in there. Minimal dust was a plus.

    Bunny approved

By Hailey on Jun 18, 2021

My minilop, Arizona, is obsessed with this hay! She chews and digs holes through the bag just to get some of this fresh hay. Arrived quickly and super green! Not much dust which makes it perfect! 10/10 recommend

    Decent hay, not our favorite

By Carlie on Jun 18, 2021

We tried this hay for the first time a few weeks ago. I hope it was a late cut of hay because it was very “sticky” with more stalks than grass. My guinea pigs don’t eat the stalks so it felt like a lot of waste.

    Bought for my guinea pigs

By jenn on Jun 13, 2021

I bought this as a change for my guinea pigs. Normally they eat Oxbow hay. Overall the hay is good, but it’s a lot more dusty than Oxbow and there were stones in the bag. I will not buy again because of this.
