About Premium Quality Hay

Premium Quality Hay

Carefresh sources hay from sustainable suppliers, so that each harvested crop will meet the quality standards your pet deserves. Every batch is thoroughly inspected and carefully hand-packed, ensuring optimum freshness, minimal dust and a clean, natural scent.

Essential High Fiber

Veterinarians often recommend hay for small pets, to promote a healthy digestive system and to nurture natural chewing behaviors. Hay can provide necessary wear and tear on their teeth and also help with weight control.

They Are What They Eat

Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas should have unlimited access to pure and natural timothy hay every day. A diet consisting of 75% hay and 20% fortified food in a stabilized form is considered ideal, with all-natural treats like strawberries or apples given occasionally as a snack. Dark leafy greens can be a great source of additional vitamins and minerals, too.

The Sweet Smell of Hay

The second cutting of timothy hay, harvested at the peak of maturity, is usually considered the hay of choice for healthy adult rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. It has nutrients in proper proportions for optimal small animal health, with the high fiber and lower protein and calcium levels your little pet needs to thrive. She’s also sure to love the soft, leafy texture and sweet aroma!

Acting Natural

Hay encourages healthy natural behaviors like foraging and grazing, which can play an important role in discouraging boredom, encouraging activity and promoting a sense of security. Even pets like hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats may enjoy a small amount of hay each week for nesting and enrichment, just be sure not to use it as their primary source of food.

Questions & Answers

3 Customer Questions

Does CareFresh quarantine their hay, indoors, for the recommended three to four months (as a RHDV2 safety precaution)?
Answer by ChewyJun 03, 2021
Carefresh Timothy hay is stored indoors for the minimum 105+ days. Their supplier follows strict HACCP based Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in accordance with USFDA regulations, recently receiving a SUPERIOR audit score. All hay batches are tested by a third party laboratory for any contaminants. All hay is safely stored indoors to ensure freshness and safety.

What state is this sourced out of?
Answer by ChewyJun 02, 2021
Carefresh Premium Western Timothy Hay Rabbit Food is sourced from Northwestern U.S. providers of the world's highest quality of hay and comes from the 2nd cutting which is most preferred by small pets because it has a finer texture with denser leaves that are more tender and healthier and higher in protein.

Which has more seed pods, first-cut or second-cut? Our Guineas love the seed pods and Oxbow always had plenty at first. Then not so much. Then we went with Kaytee and had the same problem. I'm looking for whatever has the most seed pods.

The new carefresh Timothy Hay is sourced from Northwestern U.S., providers of the world's highest quality of hay and comes from the 2nd cutting which is most preferred by small pets because it has a finer texture with denser leaves that are more tender and healthier and higher in protein. The first cutting has more seedpods (think Spring blooms). It is also more leggy (stems). Second cutting is leafier (softer, more nutritious typically). It is soft and leafy with a sweet aroma they are sure to love.

Quality changed

At first it was a good price for what you get, It wasn’t to dusty and my bunnies love it however past 2 orders theres been alot less in the bag and very small chopped up pieces. I liked this at first but srsly debating trying something else. The quality/amount differs per bag which I dont understand the size considering Im ordering 2 bags of the same size

way too dusty

This hay is so dusty. It leaves a cloud of dust as you pull it out of the bag, it’s so dusty that when we clean their houses there’s a layer of dust over the house. I can’t imagine what it’s doing to their respiratory tract. Our guinea pigs won’t even eat it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this and I won’t buy it again.

Care fresh hay

This hay is very thick and coarse. My rabbit prefers the Kaytee brand.

Dusty. good hay but huge amounts of dust

This is a nice green fresh smelling hay. My bunny has not indicated any complaints...however, Huge amounts of dust in this brand is not ideal for bun or me. good value though

Way to dusty

I love the easy pull apart hay design its so easy to take as little or as much as you need unlike with other hay brands but it is sooooo dusty it makes me sneeze so many time in a row and mt nose runs for hours after refreshing my rabbits hay!!

Guinea pigs like it

My guinea pigs eat it, so that is a plus. Some hays they won't touch, but this brand they actually wheek for when they hear the bag. It's very dry and brittle, making it very dusty and messy. I do like that it is in "sections" so I'm not tearing a huge chunk out of the bag. I bought several bags, and 2 were okay and this 3rd one is the most dusty/messy. Also, because it breaks and is dry I make sure to feed them while I am there so we don't have any accidents, as my one loves to hide in it while snacking.

Hit or miss

I ordered this hay because our usual hay had burrs and stickers in it and ruined our fleece bedding. This hay smells different and two of our pigs won't eat it.
