I have recently purchase the carefresh bedding for my two young rats. I was curious if it contains baking soda as I have been told it is toxic to rats. Is this true?
Answer by • Oct 27, 2017
CareFresh removed the baking soda from their odor stop formula used in pet bedding in January 2015. It was tested as safe. However, some packaging will still say baking soda on it because it took some time to get new bags and they did not want to delay product availability. To identify a bag without baking soda please check the lot number printed on the side of the bag. If the first set of numbers ends in a “5” then it does not contain baking soda.
Due to rats hypersensitivity to dust, I was wondering if this would be suitable for them. I know it says 99% dust free, but I'm sure after burrowing dust will be released. Is this the case?
Answer by • Apr 13, 2018
This product contains 99% dust-free material and will not release dust after burrowing.
Does the bedding have a distinct fresh scent? I read that guinea pigs can develop certain issues from the smell of scented bedding.
Answer by • Apr 05, 2018
This product is unscented.
Is this good bedding for guinea pigs I heard pine shaves was the best so was wondering this be good ?
Answer by • Apr 10, 2021
This bedding is suitable for guinea pigs and is more comfortable than shavings alone because of their sensitive feet.
This bedding smells horrible. Shortly after putting it in the cage my rats developed respiratory issues, the one of them passed away. We immediately tossed that bedding and put a different brand in the cage. Do not buy this stuff!

Bad smell, smells like cow poop, and I didn’t have gnats until I’ve used this bedding and now where I have my Guinea pigs it’s swormed in gnats.

not the same as it used to be
I have been using carefresh bedding for almost 15 years for various small animals I’ve had as pets. It was always fantastic until the end of last year. I had finally switched to auto order so I never ran out for our bunny but at first it was dark & smelled HORRIBLE!! I messaged chewy who nicely replaced & my new bags were fine. So I thought this was a one time issue. Then this year with my next order it was the same thing again, dark & smelled terrible & the smell only gets worse when our bunny pees. Which is the opposite of what it’s supposed to do! I messaged chewy again, they sent replacement bags, same issue. I canceled auto ship & tried looking in stores only to find the same issue. I know it’s not chewys fault but it definitely is carefresh!! All of their other beddings that are colored are way more expensive & not practical for bunny litter pan use. Plus I don’t need colors. I really hope carefresh fixes this problem because it sucks to spend the money only to get stinky bedding that does not absorb & only smells worse as it is used! Very disappointing!

BURNED Piggies FEET
wow, I should have paid more attention to the recent reviews. Got two things of this and it was really hard and dried out and EXTREMELY dusty. Ive never seen any carefresh look like this. We didn't notice any chemical smell like others said so we thought it was just how it was supposed to be? We used it for three days in one of our Guniea Pig cages and yesterday I noticed he had what looked like burns on the bottom of his feet! DO NOT USE THIS STUFF!!!! I will be calling Chewy to let them know that there is something very wrong with this product.

hard as rock and toxic smell!!
I recently ordered one 60L of this litter which I used to use and to my big surprise and disappointment the paper was crumbled in balls hard as rock and a terrible chemical smell came out of the bag. No way I was going to use it for my rabbits. I received an exchange quickly but it was just as bad. Requesting a refund. Will not buy again. Maybe that is a bad batch and they should recall it asap. Some animals will be hurt by it.

Carefresh is not what it used to be
I've used this product for years and have generally been happy with it. Recently, however, I've found tiny bits of plastic and what looks like aluminum foil mixed in with the bedding. This is obviously Carefresh's problem, not Chewy's--Chewy sent me replacement bags when I told them about it. I've complained to the manufacturer but have found the same problem in multiple bags of this bedding and am ready to try a different brand. I'm sick of having to carefully check each bag of bedding before deciding if I can safely give it to my rats.

Quality has declined drastically
I've been using CareFresh's natural bedding for my bunny for about four years. In the past few months, the bedding has smelled HORRIBLE... like ammonia, which is what it should smell like AFTER the animal tinkles on it. It's hard to describe how awful it smelled... and how strong it was when I opened a new pack. I purchased two like I normally do and both smelled like this. CareFresh needs to do quality control on this product ASAP.

its alright
I have used this bedding for about a year without any issues and my most recent orders have smelled like chemicals. I thought maybe it was the printing or the plastic wrapping that caused it to smell that way. I tried to air the bedding out for a few days but it still smells awful. I hope my future orders dont have this odor. It seems quite harmful to my rabbit.

Chemical Smell
This specific brand I have never had an issue with but he brown shavings have a terrible chemical smell. I immediately had to go to the store and get new shavings. I used the same brand from the store in the purple color and there was no issue. The brown shavings from the store had the same issue so I am not sure why that is but I stopped the auto ship on this version of the product.
