Questions & Answers

I have recently purchase the carefresh bedding for my two young rats. I was curious if it contains baking soda as I have been told it is toxic to rats. Is this true?
Answer by ChewyOct 27, 2017
CareFresh removed the baking soda from their odor stop formula used in pet bedding in January 2015. It was tested as safe. However, some packaging will still say baking soda on it because it took some time to get new bags and they did not want to delay product availability. To identify a bag without baking soda please check the lot number printed on the side of the bag. If the first set of numbers ends in a “5” then it does not contain baking soda.

Due to rats hypersensitivity to dust, I was wondering if this would be suitable for them. I know it says 99% dust free, but I'm sure after burrowing dust will be released. Is this the case?
Answer by ChewyApr 13, 2018
This product contains 99% dust-free material and will not release dust after burrowing.

Will I need to freeze this bedding to kill any insects?
Answer by ChewyOct 18, 2017
We don't recommend freezing the bedding because it will make it less absorbent.

Does the bedding have a distinct fresh scent? I read that guinea pigs can develop certain issues from the smell of scented bedding.
Answer by ChewyApr 05, 2018
This product is unscented.

Chemical Smell

This specific brand I have never had an issue with but he brown shavings have a terrible chemical smell. I immediately had to go to the store and get new shavings. I used the same brand from the store in the purple color and there was no issue. The brown shavings from the store had the same issue so I am not sure why that is but I stopped the auto ship on this version of the product.

its alright

I have used this bedding for about a year without any issues and my most recent orders have smelled like chemicals. I thought maybe it was the printing or the plastic wrapping that caused it to smell that way. I tried to air the bedding out for a few days but it still smells awful. I hope my future orders dont have this odor. It seems quite harmful to my rabbit.

Poor quality

Ive been using this bedding for eight plus years and never had any issues until the last two bags I purchased. Horrible chemical smell and the bedding is very dried up. Very disappointing.

Chemical smell

I have been using this bedding for 8+ years and have never had an issue. I have been seeing the reviews regarding the chemical smell but have yet to experience it myself until I opened a new bag from a new lot number this morning. The smell is horrible and not something I would ever put near my rabbit. This is unfortunate as he will now have to get used to a different bedding after using this kind for many years. Please fix this problem, carefresh.

Horrible Smell

My daughters and I have been buying this product for years for our two guinea pigs. Over the last few months; however, we've been noticing a horrible, chemical smell in some of the bags of bedding. Tonight, when cleaning the cage and putting in "clean", but smelly bedding, we also noticed bits of blue paper mixed in and a black piece of plastic too! Trash is our piggies bedding!! We no longer feel this brand and this bedding are safe to use for our guinea pigs. We're trying new products now, and I strongly recommend other customers do the same.

Smells Terrible

I've been using this brand for several years. The last two bags I've purchased have been unusable due to the strong chemical smell. I've switched brands and do not recommend this product at all.

smells awful….again

I love carefresh. Been using it for a long time. However, the natural sometimes smells awful. I just opened 1 of 4 (or 5) bags from my last autoship and the bedding smells like chemicals. This happened once before and I stopped buying it for a while. Now, I Won’t be buying this again-ever-which is a shame because the white, bleached version is more expensive.

This I prefer

Over time, I settled for this brand. The price is a bit less than some, it is safer for my guinea pig, absorbs urine better and there's less smell than some paper beddings. 4 stars I wish it were softer.

Great product poor packing

For the price this bedding material was much cheaper than even the tractor place or the Marts. However they shoved 3 vales in to one box and sealed (term used loosely) it with one strip of tape. It had to have burst before it left the site and was not holding on to much more than hope by the TE it arrived. My wife got the package and the vapes fell out.
