Questions & Answers

6 Customer Questions

Would this help promote plant growth? Also would this specific type be friendly to trumpet snails or should I go with the finer grain option?
Answer by ChewyOct 17, 2018
While this sand could be used for freshwater plants, it does not promote or encourage plant growth. The substrate can be used with trumpet snails.

Can this be used in a pond with koi and goldfish?
Answer by ChewyJul 23, 2018
This substrate is made primarily for freshwater fish aquariums which includes discus, tetra, angelfish, water turtles, rays, plants, cichilds, and more.

The description says the grain size is great for bottom dwellers. Does that include goldfish? They like to pick up gravel in their mouths and spit it back out, so is sand okay?
Answer by ChewyJun 14, 2018
Whether or not to use sand as a substrate in a goldfish aquarium is a personal preference. Some customers prefer it while others do not.

Can this be used in an already established tank?
Answer by ChewyNov 03, 2021
Any sand or gravel can be added to an established aquarium by following a couple rules. First, rinse the substrate, then add about a cupful a day to the existing bed, it may take a week or so to finish the task but this method will get you through without too much biological disruption. Second, and very important, be sure to mix the new substrate into the old, never cap an established bed with new sand.

Perfect sand

It’s a larger grain so it doesn’t get sucked up the gravel vac. It’s off white so fish waste doesn’t show a lot like the white and black sands. It’s perfect.

Beautiful but...

Looked absolutely beautiful for about a day, then my tank clouded up like nothing else and I have not been able to get it clear for days now. It's also created scum-like bubbles that collect all along the edges of the tank and around the filter.

Love the natural look

This substrate is beautiful and natural looking. I changed from regular gravel to this substrate. It is thicker than sand but thinner than the painted fish aquarium gravel you can buy at big chain stores. It is heavy enough to vacuum without sucking up a bunch. It is light enough for natural roots if you choose to plant live plants. The fish love it. Most of all, the water clears up in no time as compared to 3 weeks of the colored gravel still causing the water to be cloudy. This is a fantastic product and there are many different color selections to choose from. It also came very quickly. I did rinse the product pretty good just because I was already fighting cloudy water from the other stuff. Overall, I love this stuff!!!

Pretty gravel

This substrate is bigger then sand; which is what I thought it was. It is more like fine gravel. It is very pretty. Fish waste shows on it very easily, so you'll know when it's time to gravel vac.

Perfect grain size

Was looking for a bigger grain size for my tank. One that wouldn’t blow around by fish or filters and look like a big cloud. Plus I wanted something that wouldn’t be so compact on plant roots. This was it! Very happy with this.
