Carprofen is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.
Carprofen is tolerated well in the vast majority of dogs, and the risk for side effects occurring appears to be less than 1%. But rarely, serious side effects (stomach ulcers, liver, or kidney problems) and sometimes death have been reported.
Side effects that may be serious or indicate a serious problem:
If you see any of these signs, stop giving the drug and contact your veterinarian immediately.
No known drug interactions have been reported.
This class of drug may be associated with gastrointestinal, renal and hepatic toxicity. When nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit prostaglandins that cause inflammation they may also inhibit those prostaglandins which maintain normal homeostatic function. This may result in clinically significant disease in pets with the underlying or pre-existing disease more often than in healthy pets. The use of parenteral fluids during surgery should be considered to reduce the potential risk of renal complications when using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs perioperatively.

Carprofen.

Store at controlled room temperatures between 68° - 77°F.
Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that helps relieve the pain and inflammation that occurs with arthritis in dogs. It also helps bring relief from other joint problems and can help your pet to feel better after surgery. Carprofen is the generic alternative to Rimadyl, Novox, and Vetprofen.
Carprofen can be given once a day or it can be split into twice daily dosing. Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of medication and the frequency at which it should be given. Give this medication by mouth (orally). Gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea may be minimized if Carprofen is given with food. Carprofen should be given at the lowest dose necessary to help your dog to feel better. You should never administer Carprofen to a pet other than the one for which it has been prescribed for.
Chemicals in the body called prostaglandins are reduced with Carprofen. Since prostaglandins trigger inflammation, minimizing them helps decrease inflammation and pain that occurs as a result of arthritis, surgery, and other joint conditions.
Symptoms of arthritis include stiffness, trouble walking, and difficulty rising. These symptoms can be relieved with Carprofen although this medication will not cure arthritis since there is no known cure for this chronic condition. Your dog should start to feel better although results vary in each individual. If you discontinue Carprofen you may notice your dogs symptoms returning.
Also available in flavored tablets and chewable tablets
My Achilles had to be put down after I ordered this. I called Chewy to see what I should do with the medicine once it arrived. They were incredibly amazing and sensitive towards me and my loss. They had me contact a local shelter and see if they could take the medicine (they could!) And then they refunded my money! And then they sent my family flowers for our loss. Their customer service is above and beyond. I will continue to be loyal to Chewy for all my pets as they are truly pet people. Now, for the Carprofen itself... without this pain medicine my dog could not walk as he had patella alta and was in quite a bit of discomfort.
I’m not sure why this even happens when I get a prescription from my vet that’s good for 30 days and somehow the first time you guys fill it your settings have some kind of default because I will get three different prescriptions in the first month! It’s ridiculous. I’ve gone in a few times and thought that I changed it or added skip A refill or set it to every eight weeks instead of everyone. I certainly didn’t go in and ask to receive these once a week.
The medication received is just what the doctor ordered however the amount of time it took to mail the prescription and receive the medication was extremely long. During that time my pup was in pain waiting for her pain medication. There must be another way to expedite this process. Due to the long time involved I will most likely search for another way to get prescription medications for her.
My girl is 15+ and was beginning to show signs of difficulty getting up and doing the stairs. Our neighbor is a senior animals vet. She advised me to put my girl on this generic Rimadyl. My girl is doing really well, and she goes up and down the stairs dozens of times a day. I see this med as the reason she will be active for another few years.
Our 9-year old German Shephard has Degenerative Myelopathy and was living with increasing pain, hardly able to find a comfortable position for sleeping. This generic carprofen has been transformative for her, she's happily active again. Occasionally she has diarrhea but not too severe. We tried the generic "flavored" tablets here on Chewy and they were not nearly as effective as this tablet - also she didn't eat them so there wasn't any advantage, we still had to give them orally.
Different manufacturer that we expected. The vet gave us brown, beef flavored whereas these are your traditional white pills. Not the biggest deal, but does make it harder to give to your pet. Biggest reason for deduction is the time spent trying to get approval. My vet already approved the items, but it took two calls to get things sorted out. Not ready for prime time - I’ll be sticking with VetSource for now.
It took 10-12 days for the meds to kick in, but there is a remarkable difference in my 11 y/o German Shorthaired Pointer's mobility. Very little-if any-limp. Much longer walks (from 1/2 block in July and August to 1/2 mile now. He's got some energy and playfulness at times...like at the end of a walk.
They're pills, I don't know anything about them but the vet prescribed them for my dog and charged me 72.00 for 28 of them and chewy has them in a bottle of 60 for about 40.00 so there's a significant savings by getting them through chewy
I was really please with my order. Only disappointment was that it came a day later than initially scheduled and too late for us to get before a trip. So, I had to rush to vets and buy enough for the week that we would be gone at 3 x the cost. I will try to do a better job of animating need.
Used this as Rimadyl when it first came on the market for a stiff aging dog. He turned into a puppy practically overnight. Using it now for a dog with a large tumor and also weakness in the hind. Literally overnight tumor started to shrink and dog’s hind became much more comfortable.
