Carprofen is prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation caused by arthritis and other joint problems, so you can help your dog maintain her regular activity levels and quality of life. Carprofen may also help to reduce pain associated with surgeries and other painful conditions, and works by limiting your dog's production of prostaglandins, which are substances that can trigger inflammation. Customers may receive this drug under the names Rimadyl, Novox, Carpaquin, Quellin, Vetprofen.

Carprofen is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.

Possible Side Effects

Carprofen Tablets should not be used in dogs exhibiting previous hypersensitivity to carprofen.

Drug & Food Interactions

No known drug interactions have been reported.

This class of drug may be associated with gastrointestinal, renal and hepatic toxicity. When nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit prostaglandins that cause inflammation they may also inhibit those prostaglandins which maintain normal homeostatic function. This may result in clinically significant disease in pets with underlying or pre-existing disease more often than in healthy pets. The use of parenteral fluids during surgery should be considered to reduce the potential risk of renal complications when using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs perioperatively.

NOTE: For Generic Medications, picture displayed may not depict actual product. Generic medications may vary from one order to the next by size, color and shape depending on manufacturer. Customers may receive the same drug under the names Rimadyl, Novox, Carpaquin, Quellin, Vetprofen.

Also available in tablets.

What is Carprofen?

Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication that helps relieve the pain and inflammation that occurs with arthritis in dogs. It also helps bring relief from other joint problems and can help your pet to feel better after surgery. Carprofen is the generic alternative to Rimadyl, Novox, and Vetprofenl.

How is this medication given?

Carprofen can be given once a day or it can be split into twice daily dosing. Your veterinarian will determine the dosage of medication and the frequency at which it should be given. Give this medication by mouth (orally). Gastrointestinal upset including vomiting and diarrhea may be minimized if Carprofen is given with food. Carprofen should be given at the lowest dose necessary to help your dog to feel better. You should never administer Carprofen to a pet other than the one for which it has been prescribed for.

How does it work?

Chemicals in the body called prostaglandins are reduced with Carprofen. Since prostaglandins trigger inflammation, minimizing them helps decrease inflammation and pain that occurs as a result of arthritis, surgery, and other joint conditions.

What results can I expect?

Symptoms of arthritis include stiffness, trouble walking, and difficulty rising. These symptoms can be relieved with Carprofen although this medication will not cure arthritis since there is no known cure for this chronic condition. Your dog should start to feel better although results vary in each individual. If you discontinue Carprofen you may notice your dogs symptoms returning.

  • Not a difference

    By on

Well, I had such high hopes for carprofen, really high hopes. But I have not seen a single bit of difference in my dog. Going to go back to the vet soon and see if there's some other medication she can take. She definitely has arthritis, but for some reason carprofen doesn't work. Hopefully chewy sent me real medication, and not counterfeit or placebo.

  • Chewable, but not flavored.

    By on

I always got the Rimadyl Chewable, and my dog loved them because they were liver flavored. Unfortunately, these generics are not flavored, so my dog won't take them directly, and I have to hide them in peanut butter or dissolve them in broth to get him to take them. But still worth the incredible savings for me, despite being less convenient.

  • Pills cannot be cleanly split

    By on

These pills cannot be cleanly split by hand or by a pill splitter - they crumble badly rather than split cleanly down the middle. This is a big problem when the vet has prescribed half of a 100 mg pill. I have purchased chewable carprofen elsewhere that splits easily. I won't be purchasing it here again.

  • Appreciate how quickly I received my prescription order

    By on

I got my prescription filled really fast and appreciate you contacting my vet for it. It has really helped my dog (he doesn't limp from his arthritis) and swallows this chewable pill without even chewing (one sniff of it and it's down). He actually looks forward to getting it every morning.

  • Another great product from Chewy

    By on

My 5 year old corgi mix is having pain in the lower back and back legs. I'm satisfied that this Chewy brand is just as effective as the one prescribed by my dog's vet, and is much less costly. I give them to him crushed in his food, and he has no problem with the taste.

  • Quick and easy

    By on

Half the price of what my vet was charging for these. Was concerned they were scored as well as chewable as I split the pills sometimes and they were. They actually dissolve very well in my pups food better than the brand name and chewy had the best customer service if you ever had an issue

  • Noticed a difference

    By on

I've used this product before but now I am able to buy it through Chewy pharmacy and that is even better. We use Caprofen regularly on some of our dogs that have bad knees and it helps control the swelling and brings their activity level back up.

  • Not so sure

    By on

This is a generic form of the med I got from my vet. My dog is not doing as well as he was since I switched. I might go back to the name brand to see if this is the cause. These are chewable tablets and about 6 of them were powder and crumbles at the bottom of the bottle...not happy about that either.

  • Quick and east order & delivery

    By on

This was the first order for my dog's meds, so wasn't sure how it would go. I did it on line and they contacted my vet and I had the meds in two days! Suprised and happy with the service.
