I purchased 2 Cat Mate Microchip Cat Doors in Oct. 2020. One of them kept eating my alkaline batteries every 2-3 weeks. I did all of the suggestions that the manufacture recommended to remedy the problem but the battery issue still exists. I called Chewy and they are sending me another unit to replace the one that is defective. Patrick and his supervisor were excellent to work with and are sending another unit quickly. I highly recommend Chewy for all of your pet needs!

The clicking when the cat's chip is read and when the door shuts can be loud. That would be my only complaint. It works as it stated it would, was easy to set up and install. I had to put this on my bedroom door to keep out one cat because he is on a special food that he doesn't love and was always trying to get to my other cats food. The door works great to keep him out and allows the other 3 cats to come and go as needed. The chip reader only allows the 3 cats that are programmed to enter, but any cat can leave the room. Works great!
Works but small
on Jun 12, 2020
This door works well but it's a little small for our medium sized cat. I think it should be about an inch taller and half an inch wider. Also, the instructions need to be clearer on which side the screws are supposed to go into and the plastic should be made strong enough to keep the screws from burrowing all the way through the frame. I had to find a screw with a wider head because the original screw went all the way through and made the hole in the frame too big. Now that it's in, though, it works well with the cat's microchip.
Doesn't fit doors thicker than 1 3/8"
on Feb 15, 2020
My handyman came to install the cat door this morning but couldn't because it requires the adaptor kit for doors thicker than 1 3/8 inches. It doesn't say this anywhere in the description online. The adaptor kit says it's for walls and glass doors. The description here says that this cat door is ideal for any door, including metal. The outside of the box gives the specification that you need the kit for doors thicker than 1 3/8, but there's no information about that online. So you have to spend another $20 if your door is thicker.
Installation and programming are not for the faint of heart

Love this door... but our situation was complicated by installing the door in the cargo area of an RV (such that programming is done with the cargo door up, rendering the cat door in an upside down position)... and we are both in our 80's... and it's not easy to catch cats. We have used CatMate doors for more than 20 years, and found them very reliable and sturdy. Fortunately, we had this door before the kitties were chipped, so we could do the programming in the vet's office. We did have a programming problem, but it was apparently with the chip maker, not this door. It is really IMPORTANT to read ALL the instructions before you start, as recommended. Because I had used CatMate products for so long already, I skipped parts of the instructions, and that got me in trouble. It is possible to deactivate the electronics on this door, by putting it in Training Mode. Very nice feature. Great service from Chewy - best price and fast delivery with no shipping charge. It was a trying experience, because of our situation, but well worth the effort. Very nice door.… more
Reliable, does exactly what it is designed to do!

We installed this about 3 months ago. Training our outside cat was not as much trouble as I expected.
I check battery life monthly, and the original batteries I installed are still fine.
The settings are reliable and I know our cat's safety against wild animal entry is true, having watched a number of hungry racoons attempt entry without success!
I definitely recommend this door.

It needs to be noted that this product does not give two way access to your cat. It's main purpose is to keep other cats out. The directions are misleading and according to the Cat Mate rep are being rewritten. For two way access, one needs to purchase the Cat Mate Elite line.
Not a very useful pet door
on Jul 29, 2019
This pet door does not grant entry and exit access, only one or the other, which isn't very useful. The description doesn't state that and there's actually a question response above that's incorrect. The door itself seems well made and it programmed easily, which is the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars. However, it didn't relock very quickly or well after my cat passed through. I cannot see any use where you'd never want to set the pet door to let your pet back in. However, customer service was excellent and they handled the issue.

This is a wonderful concept IF ONLY my cat would use it! We have put her through it several times and it opened right up when her head got close, so I know it works, and that we have successfully programmed it to work with her chip, problem is that she will not use it on her own. It has been a week. Maybe she is a slow learner. I will continue to hope she finds the courage!
