Frequently Asked Questions

Can Evanger's products help with urinary tract infections?

Yes. Struvite crystals, rock - like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Choose from among the 8 Grain Free Game Meats, , Hunk of Beef, 100% Organic Chicken, as well as many others. These products are excellent supplements or treats for dogs and cats. For balanced meals, which contain vitamins and minerals, try our Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner for dogs; USDA certified Organic Braised Chicken Dinner, Organic Turkey with Butternut Squash, and Holistic Pheasant Dinner for cats. Of course, any dog or cat with urinary tract problems should be under the care of a veterinarian.

Can I feed dog food to my cats and cat food to my dogs?

Any Evanger’s food that is pure meat, such as the Grain Free Game Meats, Hunk of Beef, and Wild Salmon, can be fed to both cats and dogs as snacks, treats, or mixed with Evanger’s dry food, snacks, or treats. However, foods that include vitamins and minerals to make a complete balanced diet are formulated specifically for a dog or cat and should be fed to the indicated species.

Knowing the different dietary needs of dogs and cats is very important because pet owners that allow a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food could end up with a very sick pet….or worse. Illnesses do not usually happen if only a few meals are shared, but will happen if it continues on a regular basis. Incidentally, dogs are omnivores like people; they eat both meat and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat mostly meat. Cats have a higher protein and fat requirement than dogs. Dogs that eat cat food could end up with liver, kidney and/or pancreatic problems because cat foods are too high in protein and fat for dogs to properly metabolize. Cats that eat dog foods could end up blind or with a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy because cats have a dietary need for taurine. Dogs naturally make the amino acid taurine, while cats must have it supplied in their diets; all Evanger’s cat foods contain taurine.

Cats also require a different form of Vitamin A. Dogs, like people, naturally manufacture Vitamin A, if Beta - carotene is supplied in the diet. Last but not least, cats require arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acids for cats. Dogs can manufacture Arachodonic Acid from Omega 3 fatty acids. Both dogs and cats require linoleic (Omega 6) and linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids.

Why are there bones in Hand - Packed Chicken dinners?

Evanger’s special slow - cook, pressure - cook process softens the bones so they are splinter - free and easily digestible. Feel free to squeeze a bone in Whole Chicken Thighs or Roasted Chicken Drummette Dinner, you’ll see that the bone collapses instead of splintering, providing the ideal meal for your dog - safe, nutritious, and delicious. Bones add flavor and texture, and are great natural sources of crucial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.

Can I feed Evanger's products to my diabetic dog or cat?

Yes… Diabetic dogs and cats need to reduce carbohydrate intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Evanger’s canned diets contain so much meat (exception: Vegetarian Dinner and 100% Sweet Potato), that they can often be incorporated into the diet of diabetic dogs and cats with healthy kidneys. Diabetic dogs and cats should eat more fowl than red meat. Gold Line Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner offer dogs a balanced meal with no added carbohydrates. Similarly, Hand Packed Whole Mackerel with Gravy for cats is a delicious low - carb meal. The 8 Grain Free Game Meats and Hunk of Beef and Wild Salmon are nutrient-rich, tasty supplements or treats for diabetic dogs and cats. Please remember that diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires veterinary care. Pets being treated with insulin will require blood checks and possible insulin adjustment when changes are made to the diet.

  • Great for mixing with Game meats for a nutritious meal!

    By on

While researching the net after adopting our very first cat for lean and clean food, I stumbled upon a post on a forum where they mentioned the brand Evanger's which I'd never heard of. After a bit of research I came to love their list of ingredients on almost of their products. When you get food from Evanger's you know they won't substitute good ingredients with cheap ones and their products are chemical free. I mix 13oz of Evanger's Rabbit with 13 oz of Evanger's Vegetarian to constitute my cat's "meal". After mixing I keep half of the food in the freezer and I've been able to keep the other half for up to 4 days (my cats is free fed) in the fridge without any issues. One thing to keep in mind, at least for my cat, is that if I don't mix the two together, he will always prefer and eat the rabbit and not the vegetarian food. Overall I highly recommend this product. Furthermore Evanger's claims "Vegetarian Dinner is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages" which is another big plus! … more

  • healthy topper

    By on

This is the best canned topper for my dogs low fat diet! He has had sensitivities to higher protein and fat that give him acid reflux and make him not feel well. I have been using a low fat, lower protein, dry food and he was doing ok but not too happy about meals. I started using 2 big scoops of this vegetarian canned food to his wetted dry food and he LOVES his meals and is no longer getting sick and having acid reflux. This also looks like it has great ingredients to keep him healthy.

My 2 dogs and 2 cats all give this product 5 stars. They hear the top of the can pop and they all come running. I always have dry kibble for them as well, but they can't get enough of this product. I will definitely purchase this again, not just because they love it, but because I Love the list of ingredients.

  • cats won't eat it

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

The pate is very dry and has a strong carrot smell to it. My 6 month old kitty took a couple bites but won't eat it. The other 3 won't even try it. I tried adding some water so it's not so dry but they're still not interested. I'll end up donating it.

  • Good for dogs with pancreatitis

    By on

Our dog recently had a case of pancreatitis and we were told to put her on a low fat diet, to help her recover. She refused to eat the prescription low fat dog food which is supposed to help this condition. I talked to the Tech Service person at Evanger's who said this Vegetarian Dinner was formulated specifically to help dogs with pancreatitis. We mix the Vegetarian dinner with the prescription food and the dog loves the mixture. I think it is more healthy too. We also use Evanger's Lamb and Rice Dinner and Duck and Sweet potato Dinner. We like the ingredients in all the Evanger's products, and it seems they do a great job with quality control too.

  • Good alternative for pets on low protein diet

    By on

My dog has kidney disease and is on a low protein diet. A lot of the prescription food is manufactured overseas and has a lot of synthetic ingredients. This is a simple, healthy, fresh option. My dog really likes this food and doesn't seem to care that it's veg.

  • This vegetarian dog food is enjoyed very much

    By on

I have been looking for sometime for a dog food low in protein. Our Yorkie has a liver issue and has seizures. She would not eat the RX dog food for liver disease. When I saw this on Chewy.com I wanted to try it. She absolutely loves it and knock on wood she has not had a seizure. I truly pray this will continue.

  • Great alternative to carb & high protein foods

    By on

My dog is receiving chemo & his Onocologist told us that the cancer cells feed on carbs, so we have removed them from his diet; he also had a high protein level so we had already been feeding Hills Perscription KD. With the cancer diagnosis we needed something that would be low fat, low protein, low carbs. Evanger's Vegetarian fits our needs and the best part is our boy really seems to enjoy it.

  • Great Topper

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

I like to add canned food to my Newfies dry kibble to add some excitement to the meal. I switch up the topper and recently found this one. It was a hit! As soon as I take the lid off the can, I am surrounded with excited dogs.

  • Good product but cans arrive dented

    By on

All four of my dogs love this food. I have an elderly dog with chronic hepatitis, so low-fat food is essential for her. She is also prone to pancreatitis. No problems so far with the food with any of the dogs. I always ordered from Pet Food Direct but recently had to switch because of PFD's move to Chewy. I am concerned about the number of cans that are dented in each case of food we have received from Chewy. So far, I have ordered Whole Earth and Evanger's dog food from Chewy. In the last case of food I ordered from Chewy, four of the twelve cans were dented, two were badly dented. The food appears to be packed well so I don't understand what is causing the cans to be dented. I hope this is All four of my dogs love this food.
