Frequently Asked Questions

Can Evanger's products help with urinary tract infections?

Yes. Struvite crystals, rock-like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Choose from among the eight Grain Free Game Meats, , Hunk of Beef, 100% Organic Chicken, as well as many others. These products are excellent supplements or treats for dogs and cats. For balanced meals, which contain vitamins and minerals, try our Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner for dogs; USDA certified Organic Braised Chicken Dinner, Organic Turkey with Butternut Squash, and Holistic Pheasant Dinner for cats. Of course, any dog or cat with urinary tract problems should be under the care of a veterinarian.

Can I feed dog food to my cats and cat food to my dogs?

Any Evanger’s food that is pure meat, such as the Grain Free Game Meats, Hunk of Beef, and Wild Salmon, can be fed to both cats and dogs as snacks, treats, or mixed with Evanger’s dry food, snacks, or treats. However, foods that include vitamins and minerals to make a complete balanced diet are formulated specifically for a dog or cat and should be fed to the indicated species.

Knowing the different dietary needs of dogs and cats is very important because pet owners that allow a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food could end up with a very sick pet….or worse. Illnesses do not usually happen if only a few meals are shared, but will happen if it continues on a regular basis. Incidentally, dogs are omnivores like people; they eat both meat and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat mostly meat. Cats have a higher protein and fat requirement than dogs. Dogs that eat cat food could end up with liver, kidney and/or pancreatic problems because cat foods are too high in protein and fat for dogs to properly metabolize. Cats that eat dog foods could end up blind or with a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy because cats have a dietary need for taurine. Dogs naturally make the amino acid taurine, while cats must have it supplied in their diets; all Evanger’s cat foods contain taurine.

Cats also require a different form of Vitamin A. Dogs, like people, naturally manufacture Vitamin A, if Beta-carotene is supplied in the diet. Last but not least, cats require arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acids for cats. Dogs can manufacture Arachodonic Acid from Omega 3 fatty acids. Both dogs and cats require linoleic (Omega 6) and linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids.

Why are there bones in Hand-Packed Chicken dinners?

Evanger’s special slow-cook, pressure-cook process softens the bones so they are splinter-free and easily digestible. Feel free to squeeze a bone in Whole Chicken Thighs or Roasted Chicken Drummette Dinner, you’ll see that the bone collapses instead of splintering, providing the ideal meal for your dog – safe, nutritious, and delicious. Bones add flavor and texture, and are great natural sources of crucial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.

Can I feed Evanger's products to my diabetic dog or cat?

Yes… Diabetic dogs and cats need to reduce carbohydrate intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Evanger’s canned diets contain so much meat (exception: Vegetarian Dinner and 100% Sweet Potato), that they can often be incorporated into the diet of diabetic dogs and cats with healthy kidneys. Diabetic dogs and cats should eat more fowl than red meat. Gold Line Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner offer dogs a balanced meal with no added carbohydrates. Similarly, Hand Packed Whole Mackerel with Gravy for cats is a delicious low-carb meal. The eight Grain Free Game Meats and Hunk of Beef and Wild Salmon are nutrient-rich, tasty supplements or treats for diabetic dogs and cats. Please remember that diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires veterinary care. Pets being treated with insulin will require blood checks and possible insulin adjustment when changes are made to the diet.

  • Great Cat Food!

    By on

My cat has a beautiful, shiny coat again, and absolutely loves this food! I've used this food for several years now, and have done my research. He's a senior cat, who needs low protein and phosphorus for his kidney health, and Evangers Organics delivers!

  • Will not order again.

Evangers OG Trky & Butternut: I gave it a low score because my cat barely touched it. But she ate some. This did better than alot of other brands she won't even try. Other cats may love it but I can't recommend it. 8 cans came dented but useable. Most I will donate. Would love to order single cans through Chewy's to do taste test (not me!....my cat). I've bought 3 other cases with poor response from Emily. Kiwi Peak lamb did the best. I knew that she found lamb approachable before buying the case. finicky but loveable.

  • Organic - excellent product

    By on

We have 5 cats and all of them loved the organic canned turkey and pumpkin. I switched from feeding them for years prescription diet rabbit and pea; I switched cold turkey and none of them got sick or had an upset stomach or the runs; they are all happy and slimmer. Great product.

  • Highly recommended by my vet; cat loves it

    By on

My 9-month-old American bobtail mix has stomatitis, and the vet recommended a high-quality diet with a single protein per flavor and no fish. Evanger's was one of the brands she recommended, and it turned out to be the only one (on a list of 5!) that had turkey and duck flavors that didn't have other proteins mixed in. The foods also have other healthful ingredients, such as herbs and kelp, which is good for dental problems. So far, my cat has loved the 3 Evanger's flavors I've bought him, and his stomatitis has improved by 60% in just about 6 weeks. If your vet mentions Evanger's, I wouldn't hesitate to try this, the duck, and the rabbit/quail flavors.

  • Winner!

My two somewhat fussy felines consistently love this food...definitely their favorite of the many varieties I have offered them. And I appreciate that it has squash in it for hairball elimination purposes as well as high-quality ingredients for their nutritional health.

  • Best ingredients I have found!

    By on

Thanks Chewy. My cat loves this food. Especially the gravy. I feel good feeding it to him because of the organic ingredients with NO Natural Flavors (which is aspartame or msg disguised).

  • Good quality food but not a favorite

    By on Top 50 Contributor

I think this is a good quality food, but my cats weren't crazy about it. It's worth a try, but I probably wouldn't buy it again for my crew.

  • all four cats like it

    By on

I have four cats and they all liked it. As cats go, they all can be finicky. There is a fair amount of sauce and it is soft, which makes it easy for my older cat with teeth challenges. The can is alittle hard to open, the first time I splat the sauce. I believe the can is tin without the preservative lining, which is great. The down-side is our small recycling center will not take tin cans anymore. I'll still buy this again though.

  • Not top choice

    By on Top 500 Contributor

I didn't love the texture of this food, so I read the ingredients carefully and other people have given it a higher rating, so it certainly looks like it's very good quality. My boys eventually finished the can, but usually they eat the whole thing within seconds. So I give it a 3 stars

  • Can't keep enough of this around

    By on

I opened my first can of this hoping that my 3 picky cats would like it. I couldn't get it on their plates fast enough. Not only were those 3 dishes completely clean they were fighting over who got to lick the other ones dish. I have never had this happen. I have one that eats much quicker than the others and helps himself to my older cats leftovers (before he is done) the older one just walks away but not this time. He snapped and hissed at him and finally finished his entire plate. Will definitely keep this on the shelf at home for dinner time.
