Frequently Asked Questions

Can Evanger's products help with urinary tract infections?

Yes. Struvite crystals, rock-like accretions that scrape sensitive tissues in the urinary tract, are a major cause of inflammation and infection in dogs and cats. The formation of struvite crystals is possible when urine is too alkaline. In meat, we are provided with an acidifier that is natural and promotes overall good health in dogs and cats. So increasing the amount of high quality meat consumed can acidify the urine and help prevent the formation of struvite crystals. Evanger’s offers many canned products whose sole ingredient is USDA meat. Choose from among the eight Grain Free Game Meats, , Hunk of Beef, 100% Organic Chicken, as well as many others. These products are excellent supplements or treats for dogs and cats. For balanced meals, which contain vitamins and minerals, try our Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner for dogs; USDA certified Organic Braised Chicken Dinner, Organic Turkey with Butternut Squash, and Holistic Pheasant Dinner for cats. Of course, any dog or cat with urinary tract problems should be under the care of a veterinarian.

Can I feed dog food to my cats and cat food to my dogs?

Any Evanger’s food that is pure meat, such as the Grain Free Game Meats, Hunk of Beef, and Wild Salmon, can be fed to both cats and dogs as snacks, treats, or mixed with Evanger’s dry food, snacks, or treats. However, foods that include vitamins and minerals to make a complete balanced diet are formulated specifically for a dog or cat and should be fed to the indicated species.

Knowing the different dietary needs of dogs and cats is very important because pet owners that allow a dog to eat cat food or a cat to eat dog food could end up with a very sick pet….or worse. Illnesses do not usually happen if only a few meals are shared, but will happen if it continues on a regular basis. Incidentally, dogs are omnivores like people; they eat both meat and vegetables. Cats are obligate carnivores; they eat mostly meat. Cats have a higher protein and fat requirement than dogs. Dogs that eat cat food could end up with liver, kidney and/or pancreatic problems because cat foods are too high in protein and fat for dogs to properly metabolize. Cats that eat dog foods could end up blind or with a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy because cats have a dietary need for taurine. Dogs naturally make the amino acid taurine, while cats must have it supplied in their diets; all Evanger’s cat foods contain taurine.

Cats also require a different form of Vitamin A. Dogs, like people, naturally manufacture Vitamin A, if Beta-carotene is supplied in the diet. Last but not least, cats require arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acids for cats. Dogs can manufacture Arachodonic Acid from Omega 3 fatty acids. Both dogs and cats require linoleic (Omega 6) and linolenic (Omega 3) fatty acids.

Why are there bones in Hand-Packed Chicken dinners?

Evanger’s special slow-cook, pressure-cook process softens the bones so they are splinter-free and easily digestible. Feel free to squeeze a bone in Whole Chicken Thighs or Roasted Chicken Drummette Dinner, you’ll see that the bone collapses instead of splintering, providing the ideal meal for your dog – safe, nutritious, and delicious. Bones add flavor and texture, and are great natural sources of crucial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron.

Can I feed Evanger's products to my diabetic dog or cat?

Yes… Diabetic dogs and cats need to reduce carbohydrate intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Evanger’s canned diets contain so much meat (exception: Vegetarian Dinner and 100% Sweet Potato), that they can often be incorporated into the diet of diabetic dogs and cats with healthy kidneys. Diabetic dogs and cats should eat more fowl than red meat. Gold Line Chicken Dinner and Beef Dinner offer dogs a balanced meal with no added carbohydrates. Similarly, Hand Packed Whole Mackerel with Gravy for cats is a delicious low-carb meal. The eight Grain Free Game Meats and Hunk of Beef and Wild Salmon are nutrient-rich, tasty supplements or treats for diabetic dogs and cats. Please remember that diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires veterinary care. Pets being treated with insulin will require blood checks and possible insulin adjustment when changes are made to the diet.

  • Big, green check-mark for Evanger's!

    By on

I have two cats with tummy problems - one of them is sensitive, and the other is fat. My fat cat became so round from free-choice kibble feeding (and being a bag-ripping menace), and I couldn't find a kibble that didn't make my sensitive cat vomit, so I switched them both to Evanger's Seafood & Caviar and hoped for the best. Overall, it went very well. Both cats seem to enjoy the taste, they both hover while I dish out their meals and start eating right away. They never clean their bowls, though. I ended up only needing to feed one can a day because they're both only eating 1/4 a can at a time. They don't act hungry until it's close to meal time again, so I assume this food is filling them up I have two cats with tummy problems - one of them is sensitive, and the other is fat. Sensitive cat has not thrown up once after two weeks on this food, which gives Evanger's a huge green check from me. Fat cat enjoys his meals and has lost a decimal amount of weight since he started his new diet. The only thing that would make this food better would be selling it in 3oz cans. … more

  • Likes but will not eat leftover can

    By on

My cat gobbles this up when I open a fresh can. However the other half the can at the next feeding is rarely eaten. I get a quick sniff and bury. I've even tried microwaving but still nothing. I've been feeding the entire can occasionally in order to finish the case at this point. Worth a try.

  • BEST PRODUCT

    By on

I have been feeding this product to my two mix bengals since 2012. My former provider in Miami suggested them according to price and supreme quality. My pets love it and so does my wallet! It keeps them healthy and happy!

  • My picky guys love this

Evanger's is one of the most reliable brands for my crew of 3 finicky felines. They get bored eating the same flavor too often, so I have to mix it up a lot. So far, the Seafood & Caviar flavor is their favorite. Pheasant goes over well for them, too.

  • Not for finicky kitties

    By on

All 3 kitties took one lick and walked away. I thought it would be perfect since it isn't a pate consistency but not up to their standards!

  • My cats weren't fans

    By on

My cat's were not too happy with this. One of them ate it but she acts like she's never seen food anytime food is put in front of her but I could tell she didn't like it much. I feed them a little wet in the morning and a little at night. In the morning, she eats it but at night she will take a bite and walk away. Normally, she is excited at dinner time. My other cat barely touched it. It also smells sooooo bad, not like normal cat food just bad. I'm not too upset they don't like it because of that.

  • Two Tails Up

My kitties love this food. I have a male Ocicat and a female Siberian and they often disagree, but this is one food that they both agree is yummy and eat it all up.

  • Love the Gravy but Dislike Meat

    By on

Cats love the sauciness of this food, but they will not touch the meat. One cat will lick the bowl dry of sauce and never touch the meat. I plan to try another flavor. The outdoor feral cat loves it.

  • Excellent Product

    By on

I feed a group of cats now referred to as "Community Cats." (Ferals). I wanted to give them something they would love and was extremely healthy for them. They must live through harsh, cold winters, hot summers, hurricanes - you name it. I felt they would be better able to handle the many challenges they have to deal with if they were eating properly. I tried many, many products. This is by far, their favorite. I just ordered 3 cases!
