Transition Instructions

Many pets require up to 7 - 10 days to adjust to a new food because their intestinal tracts contain unique bacteria and enzymes that need to adapt to the proper digestion of a new food. Follow these guidelines for changing your pet’s current dry or canned food to Halo dry or canned food:

Days 1 - 3: 75% old food, 25% Halo Days 4 - 5: 50% old food, 50% Halo Days 6 - 7: 25% old food, 75% Halo Days 8+: 100% Halo

If you have a pet with a sensitive stomach, transition them even more slowly (over 2 to 3 weeks) to avoid digestive upset.

If your dog or cat experiences digestive upset during the transition (poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or soft stool, etc.), return to the new food amount that was not causing problems and keep them there for a few more days before continuing with the diet change. Once your pet is eating all Halo if you change between the flavors, consider a 2 or 3 day transition to minimize stomach upset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is canned food bad for my pet’s teeth?

No. While many vets recommend dry food to "keep teeth clean and healthy" it is a fact that many pets do not chew their food well enough to get any abrasive cleaning action from dry food. Whether you feed dry or canned food the single most important thing for dental health is tooth brushing.

Why does Halo refer to its products as natural?

Because it is! AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) defines "natural" pet food as having ingredients from ONLY plant, animal or mined sources. These foods cannot be highly processed or contain chemically synthetic ingredients, such as artificial flavors, preservatives or colorings.

Why does Halo refer to its products as holistic?

The holistic viewpoint that Halo has stems from the belief that health is achieved by focusing on the whole body through natural living. Halo believes that the quality of ingredients a pet eats is the foundation of overall well-being but that elimination of harsh chemicals from food, treats and the environment is also critical to achieve optimal health.

Why does Halo use so much egg and peas in their formulations?

Halo uses eggs and peas as an additional source of highly digestible protein to support protein levels in all formulations. Halo does not use meat meal as a concentrated source of dried protein and uses only whole real meat ingredients. It is more difficult to achieve very high protein levels when using whole real meat instead of a meat meal. We feel the eggs and peas are healthier alternatives to meat meal.

Why does Halo avoid rice and corn in their foods?

Halo defines corn and white rice as "fillers". These are carbohydrates that may raise blood sugar levels rapidly and create hormonal signals that may have negative long term effects on metabolism and weight gain. Corn and rice based diets may also contribute to chronic symptoms of maldigestion, such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Halo makes healthier carbohydrate choices by using whole grains such as barley and oats and vegetables like sweet potatoes. These carbohydrates are nutrient-dense because they supply energy as well as high levels of fiber for digestive health and high levels of vitamins and minerals for overall health.

  • THIS IS THE BEST FOOD YOU WILL EVER FIND

    By on

This is seriously thee best wet cat food I have ever found. It actually has real peas and green bean in it and my 2 cats just loved it. I mean loved it. It smelled and looked so good I almost wanted to try it. Almost. This is the direction pet food makers need to go. Real ingredients, real good food. Most veterinarians unfortunately are a bit uninformed when it comes to cat food. They tell you people food is bad for cats but there's chicken, turkey, salmon, beef cat food everywhere. People food is really good for cats and this food is the best thing I have ever seen and I've had multiple cats in my life. Highly Recommended.

  • AS expected

    By on

I opened the first can and gave it to the cat and she sniffed it twice and walked away and refused to eat it, so I had to give away 11 cans of uneaten food.

  • Didn't like

Unfortunately she would not eat the stew at all. I was told that you would be able to make an adjustment OR something for me as I now don't have enough food for my babies this month. Please let me know ASAP what you can do.

  • Great ingredients and 3 cats LOVE it

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

Very good ingredients, no carrageenan (which Halo does use in other flavors, so read the labels!), BPA-free cans. All three cats devour this flavor and is by far their favorite of any other canned foods I rotate. They all love the vegetables, too. No issue there for us. My only issue is that a can of the stew provides less food and less protein for each cat, so I have to feed them more than I do with pate consistencies, which they prefer in every other canned food, except for this flavor. Must be the shrimp & crab.

  • Kitties really enjoy this one.

    By on

This is what my two girls get for breakfast every morning. But when they walk away one has a plate of peas left and the other a plate of carrots. Haha. Can't please everyone I guess.

  • GOOD PRODUCT...BUT...My 2

    By on Top 50 Contributor

My two boys really like this food however it is only 6% protein. Most brands are 10 to 12% protein. Halo pates are higher n protein but they contain carageenan. I feed this flavor to them every so often as a treat. I do wish that the many good companies such as Wellness, Merrick and Core etc. would stop using carageenan.

  • Most of my cats like it!

I usually use this as a topping for some other canned food and most of my 6 kitties like it.

  • Love it

    By on

My cat LOVES this stuff! He licks his plate clean! All of his other cat food he would eat half and leave the other half for later. With this, not a chance. He eats all of it within seconds! Happy to have found something he loves.

  • A healthy and natural food

    By on

I like the fact that I can see the peas and carrots mixed in with the "meat" and gravy. As a new meal offering, my three cats ate it eagerly and licked their chops but did not finish their portions. Maybe because it was very "filling".
