As cats age, they may require food designed to help reduce nutrient excesses that could be harmful to their system. For example, high levels of sodium, phosphorus and protein can cause increased workload in the kidneys and heart. Kidneys are very important to the health of your cats because they remove waste substances from the blood and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. The heart is the most important organ in you pet's body, and factors such as age or weight may affect its function. Poor heart health can affect your cat's lifestyle and mood. Because the food your cat eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being, at Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older cat's kidney and heart for overall health.

Key Benefits

  • Reduced phosphorus to minimize stress on aging kidneys
  • Reduced sodium to help maintain normal blood pressure
  • Optimal fat levels to reduce pancreatic workload
  • Added taurine to help maintain normal heart muscle function

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 14 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for older cats. This is really good for my 24 yr old cat. He has acute pancreatitis & cant eat fatty foods. August 2, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by My cat loves it. My cat is thirteen and had been on a K/D diet which she did not love. My vet decided that she needed more nutrition because she was losing too much weight and muscle mass. Since changing she has gained some weight and definitely enjoys the food much more. June 2, 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Good for my cats heart health. Similar to a human child, getting a cat to eat something good for them can be a challenge. My heart murmured and overweight cat will only eat this when I fail to give her her Hartz Bisque food. All other food options expended she will finally eat some of the food. My normal health Siamese male will eat it but never finish what's there which is unusual for him. Overall, I don't think I will be re-ordering this due to a lack of taste/smell attraction for the cat that it really needs to eat it. If I have to spend money I'd rather spend it on something palatable for her that is also beneficial to her health. Just a little more tweaking for Hills and it's a winner. March 6, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sassy senior My kitty is 12 and has some early signs of kidney issues. This food helps her immensely. Normal levels for the past 2 years since starting this diet. Loves the dry food...but not the wet food. Go figure, right? December 16, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Finicky cat likes it Like many cats, mine has a mind of his own. Getting Buddy to accept a new cat food (even though it will help him live longer) took some creativity. Mixing it with his old food and then, slowly decreasing the amount of the old food until he was eating the Prescription food 100% worked. He enjoys it. I feed my cat twice a day. As an added treat, once a day I include a small bowl with a heaping teaspoonful of the canned Prescription food. He looks forward to that. I am extremely pleased with your product and appreciate that you frequently offer money-saving on-line coupons. May 4, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by My cats barely eat this Due to the my aging cat Micetro with CRF he is forced to eat a prescription diet. We first tried the KD that he did not eat at all then switched to the GD and thankfully he eats it somewhat. Likes the wet food better. Also, I printed out the coupons a while ago and misplaced them, when I went back to the site to reprint I was told I used my quota. Not only am I paying top dollar for prescription diet that my cats hardly like, I can't even get a coupon. Might end up changing vets if there are no other food options. July 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Healthier than other brands I know this food cost more than other brands but I think because it is healthier I am actually saving on vet bills because they're not having any issues. October 9, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Would be nice if it were palatable.... My veterinarian suggested this for my geriatric cat. He refused to eat it. I ended up feeding it to the ferals. I was disappointed because I feel that it should have been palatable, and I know this diet would prolong my old guy's life. I went back to Hill's Age Defying, hopefully it is just as good for geriatric felines. February 14, 2014
