Feeding Instructions

Because iodine intake from other food sources -- treats, another cats food, etc. -- can compromise the effectiveness of low-iodine nutrition, its critical that you follow your veterinarians feeding instructions carefully and feed only y/d.Adjust feeding amounts as necessary to maintain optimal weight. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. For best results & safety practices: Cover and refrigerate unused portion. Gradually transition to your pets new food over a 7 day period. Exclusively feed the recommended Prescription Diet dry food & canned food. Keep fresh water available at all times. Have your veterinarian monitor your pets condition.

Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

I am so happy that there is a food on the market to help my cat's hyperthyroidism since it is way easier to give her a food that helps than giving her medication to help correct her condition. However, I didn't give it 5 stars since my cat seems to be bored with it. She loved it at first, but each day she is looking at it and walking away a little bit more (She just finished 2 weeks of this food so it's still early in the game). There is so much food in one can that after opening, you have to refrigerate it and my kitty doesn't like it cold later in the day. I wish Hill's sold this canned food in the smaller size like that of Fancy Feast. I have been opening one can per day and by the end of the day, I still have half a can left and end up putting that down the drain. It kills me to do this since this cat food is so pricey. I also wish they made it in another flavor. The smell of it is a bit overwhelming for me as well. She LOVES the dry version of the Hill's Prescription YD though so that is what is saving her from losing weight! :-) … more

  • Health of my cat

A few months ago I noticed that my cat was losing to much weight and losing her hair from her mid section to her tail. It took me 2 months to come up with enough money to go to the vet. That is when I learned it was her thyroid. The cost at the vets for this cat food was 2.85 per can - so I went to Chewy. There was a real problem beginning with the vet not informing me that I needed a perscription to go to a pet store OR order from Chewy. Chewy representatives assisted me on this matter and got no where with me vet. Finally I went to another vet and they got me the perscription. It ended up costing me 25.00 for a week - but Chewy refunded the 25.00 off of my 56.00 order because of the delay A few months ago I noticed that my cat was losing to much weight and losing her hair from her mid section to her tail. Having a limited income, the return of the 25.00 assisted me alot. They were great - I have told my friends what Chewy did to assist me. I hope they will consider Chewy for their pet needs as well. I see that my cat is now putting weight back on and some of her fur is coming back - but time will tell. At this point I only give 3 stars for the food. We will see. … more

  • Dinner for Prissy

To avoid a very risky operation my vet suggested I try Hills Prescription Diet thyroid care to see if the operation could be avoided. I was told that many cats would not take to this food. My cat Prissy started eating both the wet and the dry food from Hill's with no problem immediately and devours it every day. I would say she must Love it.

  • Great if water is added

I bought this food after trying to give my 13 year old cat meds for her thyroid. She ate her regular food with meds in it for 3 days then she quit eating her food all together. Reading online the side effects for that med was loss of appetite. So this was the second thing to try. I couldn't believe how dry this food is. You have to add some water to it. When I gave the food to my cat I couldn't believe she ate it like she was starving. My cat has been eating this for a week now. My cat gained her weight back and is looking better than ever. I wish there was more variety of y/d food instead of just pate. The only reason I gave this 3 stars.

  • Needs better taste texture

My cat LOVED wet food....until this. Due to hyperthyroidism, she can't have regular cat food. This food is like rubber. I even tried warming it, but it doesn't make it any more appealing. She does pick at the dry y/d food but doesn't much care for that. Probably won't need this re-order for long since cat isn't eating.

  • Y/C Thyroid Care Diet

I am highly impressed. My cat is very picky with what she eats and I was for sure this method wouldn't work. The minute I opened the can she was sniffing like crazy and then she started crawling up my leg for it. She always cleans her bowl now. It is amazing food! Very happy customer!

  • For his health

My 11 yr old cat was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and his vet prescribed this diet regimen. He does not like it after 3wk. But I continue to offer it as it what is best. With only one flavor, he has little choice.

  • My boys love it!

    By on

My boys absolutely love this food. They had no issues transitioning, and seem to barf less than before. My cat with the thyroid issues had already put on a couple of ounces!!! My only complaint is that they love it so much, they always want more and being so expensive, I cringe at their enthusiasm.

  • Great food for the cat

My cat has a thyroid problem and this is a better price than I can get at the Vet's office. This is the only food that my cat is allowed to eat. He can't have anything else or the food will not work.

  • Kitty Thyroid care

Happy to say that my cat likes it and eats it all every day. I give her 1/4 of a can each day besides the dry Thyroid Care food. She also likes that and already is gaining some weight back.
