Ideal feeding amounts will vary by age, weight, and activity level so the guide below should be used as an initial recommendation. Divide the cups per day by the number of feedings per day. Be sure to always provide clean, fresh water. Along with dry food, we recommend feeding raw or wet food to help increase the amount of water in your pet’s diet.

Daily Feeding Guidelines (standard 8 oz dry measure cup):

Weight Adult Maintenance Daily Feeding (Cups) Weight Loss Daily Feeding (Cups)
5 lbs 3/8 1/4
10 lbs 5/8 1/2
15 lbs 7/8 5/8

Transition Instructions

Always introduce a new food over a period of 5 - 7 days, mixing increasing amounts of Instinct with the current food each day.

The Pure, Real Nutrition of Raw Is In Everything Instinct Does

Instinct's Responsibility as The Raw Brand

LEAD WITH RAW

It all started with Instinct's raw pet food. Since the beginning, they've led with raw because they know the good it can do. They're rewriting the rules of pet food and championing raw nutrition to bring its superior benefits to all that they do.

KEEP IT REAL

Delicious and nutritious pet food should only use real ingredients. For Instinct, this means all-natural, real meat, fruits and vegetables, with nothing artificial.

MAKE IT SIMPLE

Feeding raw should be simple, and it should easily fit into your everyday routine. Instinct believes raw should be accessible to pet parents so every pet can experience the benefits of raw nutrition.

GIVE BACK

Instinct believes in the power of raw nutrition. It only makes sense to share it. Together with Best Friends Animal Society, they're furthering the no-kill movement and their shared mission of transforming and saving the lives of pets.

MAKE IT BETTER

Instinct has never been afraid to challenge the status quo of pet nutrition. They continuously redefine what better means—always pushing their standards of nutrition to raise the bar in pet food.

Pure, real nutrition of raw on every piece

ONE MILLION MEALS

All pets deserve food that's real, nutrient-rich, grain-free and natural. That's why Instinct provides over one million meals annually to the dogs and cats at Best Friends Animal Society adoption centers nationwide. Because what we feed them can make all the difference. Here "we" refers to the pet parent, not Instinct.

About Instinct

Instinct believes deeply that it's up to them to find a way to make it possible for more people to feed their pets the pure, real nutrition that only comes from raw. They know that if they can get the nutrition of raw into more bowls, they'll transform the lives of more pets. And that's really why they do what they do.

  • Cat "Lucky Charms"

    By on

This review is for Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Bits Chicken - not for the "Healthy Weight" formula. My two cats like this stuff pretty well. They'll ask for it if we've been only giving them wet, but mostly ignore it once they have it. What they like to do, like kids with "Lucky Charms" Cereal, is fish out all the raw bits (as if they were marshmallows), and eat those while leaving the kibble behind. They fish the raw bits out with their paws and make a terrible mess; the kids think it's hilarious. So, the food is healthy, entertaining, and apparently pretty-well received. Can't go wrong with that. ;)

  • Another tough review to write...

    By on

I generally don't like writing bad reviews just because my cats didn't eat a certain food, because I don't know whether it's due to something wrong with the food, or it's due to cats being cats. Instinct came highly recommended to me by a fellow cat slave. We first tried a duck flavor. Cats didn't like it and I thought maybe my cats just don't like duck flavor because they had a similar reaction to another brand's duck flavored dry food. Purchased this instead. One cat ate only the raw bits. The other cat didn't touch it at all. Put this food side-by-side with another brand they've been eating and they both went for the familiar food. They usually really like any new food I give them I generally don't like writing bad reviews just because my cats didn't eat a certain food, because I don't know whether it's due to something wrong with the food, or it's due to cats being cats. So, when we tried Instinct twice and they turned their little nose up both times, that tells me there's something about this brand that just isn't working for my cats. Who knows, maybe yours will like it. … more

  • My cats love it!

    By on

I was afraid to buy the healthy weight type of Nature's Variety -- who likes diet food? But my cats didn't even notice a difference between the regular brand and the diet brand! Highly recommended for someone looking for a great food for plump kitties.

  • Cat didn't like the raw bits

    By on

This is a great product idea, and my cat is used to the NV Instinct grain free foods. However, I paid extra to get the freeze dried raw bits that are included in this product. Unfortunately, my cat has been eating the regular bits and leaving the freeze dried ones aside. I've been given them to the squirrels outside. It's unfortunate.

  • Cats hate this!

I like what the product stands for but unfortunately my cats hate it! They are eating very little and they pick out the raw parts and leave the rest.

  • Potato free

    By on

I have a 10 yr old male tuxedo that is not only diabetic but suffers from potato allergies, of which is commonly used as a filler in most cat foods. This food does not include any potato products. His incessant sneezing is almost totally gone as well as his blood sugar levels dropping from the 300's down into the 200's. The cost is somewhat more than my previous food but if I can get his blood sugar down more his need for insulin will drop if not reverse his diabetes all together. Great product and all 4 cats eat it well.

  • Success!

    By on

I needed a lower calorie option for my rather hefty cat. I tried several but the big guy would pick around them and leave about half uneaten. This one is a hit! My local stores do not stock it reliably so Chewy is a great option.

  • My fat cat finished his diet after three years

    By on

Tommy started just under 21 lbs on a prescription formula August 2013. The progress was slow, and his goal weight was 13.1 lbs. I wasn't happy with the quality of his expensive, prescription food, and he'd been on Nature's Variety when he was younger and free feeding. Early this year I took him off his prescription and put him on Healthy Weight at just under 15 lbs. It's now three years since he started portion control and he's 12.87 lbs. He's a bigger boy, so he's supposed to be about 13 lbs. He gets 60 grams (by weight, not cup) over five feedings a day. I don't feel guilty about giving him treats anymore.

  • Not the same as smaller bags

    By on

We had purchased the same food, but in smaller bags, from our local pet store and the cats loved it. This bag smelled funny even to my husband and myself. Also, there were so many "bursts" that you could barely see the kibble, and the cats won't come near it. We have had to find other food. It is a shame, as we were looking forward to the convenience of your automatic shipping program.

  • Fantastic food

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

I used to buy the regular version, but I bought this one because my fat cat wasn't losing weight with strict portion control. She's lost weight now and my other 2 cats are very lean and healthy. The male wasn't fat, but he had a little excess weight and now he looks great! They love the flavor and the "raw" pieces.
