Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of some of the formulas changes?

In our efforts to continuously improve digestion for your pets, we optimized fiber levels in our formulas by using more whole ingredients like chickpeas and reducing others like beet pulp to improve on our guarantee of small, firm stool.

Why did we remove the name of WHOLESOME ESSENTIALS?

We felt that since all the ingredients in each of our recipes are wholesome and essential to the benefits of the recipe, it was unnecessary to call it out on just one of our lineups.

Are the Lamb & Rice Recipes still Limited Ingredient Diet?

Yes. Our Limited Ingredient Diets are designed to help minimize food sensitivities by limiting the type of ingredients used to those not commonly associated with food sensitivities. There will still only be one novel animal protein in each pack – lamb and lamb meal. The Venison Meal, Whole Brown Rice & Oatmeal Recipe and Fish, Whole Brown Rice & Potato Recipe will also remain as Limited Ingredient Diet with only one novel animal protein source. Although some formulas have additional carbohydrate sources (e.g. chickpea and split pea), we are still limiting the type of ingredients to those that are not commonly associated with food sensitivities (i.e. we still do not have wheat or corn).

Does the new NUTRO™ dog food still have a skin and coat guarantee?

Yes, all dog formulas except the Lite Weight Loss products will still have a complete satisfaction or your money back guarantee to provide healthy skin and a soft, shiny coat.

What is the benefit of chickpeas and split peas in NUTRO™ Dog Food?

Chickpeas have an excellent balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Thus our formula can provide carbohydrates, protein, and fiber from a single, whole ingredient rather than fractionated ingredients that are high in only one nutrient.

What is the benefit of flaxseed in NUTRO™ Dog Food?

Flaxseed is used as a source of fiber, protein, and healthy oils. The soluble and insoluble fibers in flaxseed help us achieve better digestive health and stool quality in our formulas. Additionally, it contributes healthy oils, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, like linoleic acid, which help fulfill essential nutrient requirements and promote skin and coat health.

What is the benefit of alfalfa meal in our formulas?

Alfalfa meal is used as a source of fiber in our High Protein Grain Free Recipes. The soluble and insoluble fibers in alfalfa meal help us achieve better digestive health and stool quality in our formulas. Additionally, alfalfa meal is used in Large Breed Weight Management and Lite Weight Loss products as a fiber source and to help minimize the caloric content.

Is there a formulation change on wet?

Yes. We have increased essential nutrients in our wet dog formulas so that feeding guidelines can be tailored to the energy needs of inactive dogs while still providing optimal nutrition and meeting essential nutrient requirements.

Why is natural pet food better?

We believe that natural pet food is healthier, safer and tastier.

Does NUTRO Brand Dog and Cat Food contain artificial preservatives?

No, our foods are naturally preserved with vitamin E. We never use chemicals like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propyl gallate or sodium hexametaphosphate in NUTRO™ Natural Dog Food or Cat Food.

Where are NUTRO Products made?

We are proud that NUTRO Products are made in our own U.S. facilities. Our facilities are located in Victorville, Calif.; Lebanon, Tenn.; and North Sioux City, S.D. Our GREENIES Products are made in Kansas City, Mo.

How do you read the code dates on NUTRO Cans and Trays?

Due to technical advances in materials, the expiration dates for cans and trays produced after March 31, 2004 will be two years from the date of manufacture.

Here is an example of the coding: First Line: BEST BY MM DD YY Second Line: Contains manufacturing information (i.e., plant, line and time) MM = Month of Production DD = Day of Production YY = Year of Production + 2 Years For example, a can manufactured on May 31, 2011 would be coded: BEST BY 05 31 13 (MAY 31, 2013).

How do you read the code dates on NUTRO™ Biscuits and Treats?

The code can be found on the top flap of our biscuit and treat packages. This is the “Best by" code date format. It is the first line and will appear like the following example: Best by 04 AUG 13 92 1 First line: “Best by 04 AUG 13” means it’s best by August 4, 2013. “92 1” is the plant ID information. Second line: Contains manufacturing information, such as shift, line, time, etc.

How do you read the code dates on NUTRO Dry Food?

Our NUTRO Pet Food has a “Best by" code date stamped on the back of the package. It is the first line and will appear like the following example: Best by 24 APR 13 27 1 First line: “Best by 24 APR 13” means it’s best by April 24, 2013. “27 1” is the plant ID information. • Nutro Kitten Soft Loaf Chicken

    By on

I started my kittens on this when I got them when they were 5 weeks old per my vet's recommendation. They love it and even my older cat loves it so they've all stayed on this canned food. Love the convenience of buying this by the case online and the fast delivery makes it ultra convenient for me.

  • Only the best for 2 new kittens

    By on

We just adopted 2 farm kittens that are off to a rough start with intestinal parasites and god awful ringworm. So I did a great deal of online research as to the best canned kitten food to feed them. This one is rated high and chewy had a great price plus free delivery. I am very pleased and signed up for the automatic shipments to save even a bit more $$. They love the food!

  • Got a good rating

    By on

This food got a good rating on cleanlabelproject.org so I was happy when my two newly adopted kittens took right to it. They had diarrhea when we got them, but this and also feeding them Fromm Gold Kitten has resulted in shiny soft coats and no more diarrhea (so glad to not be cleaning up after that anymore). They come running when they hear it being opened! I did offer it to our adult cat as well, to see if he would like it, but he turned his nose up at it.

  • Used for a senior cat

    By on Top 500 Contributor

We used this for one of our senior cats to get a few more calories in him when he was having some health issues. At the time we were pureeing his food and feeding him with a syringe. The pate is moist so it was readily accepted. We foster and I would definitely use this for kittens.

  • All the cats like this kitten canned food

    By on

Then again, all the cats seem to like most good canned cat food so it's hard to tell if it's this cat food or what. But there are a few they really DON'T like, which I'm not naming, so there's that to consider. Oddly enough, a top ranked brand is one they really don't like. Go figure.

  • Foster Kittens' Favorite Food

    By on

I have two foster kittens, Peach and Rosalina. Both are VERY malnourished. It took a lot of coaxing to get them to eat...and I tried just about every brand and flavor of every canned food out there. This kitten food, however, was the one that they ate voraciously. I just bought a second case of it, and will use it in the future for other fosters.

  • Not a big fan

    By on Top 50 Contributor

I was using natural balance kitten food and even though my kitten liked it, I thought I would give nutro a try because I liked the ingredients, but wow he hated it. I'm upset because I bought a package of cans from chewy when I should have gotten 1 can at the pet store and tried it that way. Oh well, I donated it to my local shelter for other kittens who hopefully will eat it. Good ingredients just my cats are too picky!!

  • Kittens love it

The kittens are probably too young to be finicky, but I can say they gobble this up pretty quick!

  • Nutro Soft Loaf

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

My two kittens are not picky eaters, however, they walked away from this each time I put it in the bowl. It does look a little different but I guess that's because it's not called a pate. I like the minced salmon product from Nutro (that's why I tried this) but I won't purchase this again.
