Cat Skin & Coat Care

Keeping your cat’s fur healthy and beautiful takes relatively little effort for impressive results. It all starts with feeding your cat a highly nutritious diet. Foods packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids pack a great one-two punch against dull coats and unhealthy skin, keeping your cat looking her best. Some cat skin conditions can even be cleared up by switching foods. If you’re feeding your kitty a low-quality food, the added nutrients from foods of higher quality could make all the difference. Alternatively, your cat may be allergic, or have a food sensitivity, to the meat proteins or another ingredient in the food you’re feeding her. And that could show up as sparse, lackluster fur or certain skin irritations. If you suspect this is the case with your cat, try switching to limited ingredient cat food or one with exotic proteins like buffalo, venison or duck. In addition to feeding your cat right, bathing your cat with shampoos and conditioners containing oatmeal or aloe will help to keep your kitty’s skin and coat healthy and looking fabulous. These ingredients will nourish your cat’s fur while also soothing dry, itchy skin, dermatitis and eczema, and combating hair loss. But be careful not to overdo it. Bathing too often can actually remove the natural oils your cat’s fur relies on to stay healthy, leading to hair damage and irritated skin. It’s best to bathe your cat once or twice a month or whenever she is visibly dirty. And if you have a medium- or longhaired cat, regular brushing of her fur will go a long way. If your cat does develop cat skin conditions or irritation, there’s a range of antifungal and antiseptic products that could help. They are available as sprays and wipes for easy application. Be sure to check with your vet if you suspect cat skin allergies or a chronic skin disease. In this case, your vet might have you use antifungal and antiseptic sprays or wipes on a regular basis to keep your kitty healthy and beautiful. Make sure your kitty’s getting the right nutrition and keep an eye out for irritating cat skin conditions. With all the solutions available at Chewy, we’re sure your cat will be the prettiest, most cuddle-able cat on the block.
