I guess it depends on the cat and what they like. I have 3 cats and 2 will play with toy. One does off and on but my smallest cat loves it a lot. Especially at night she will spend about 15 to 20 working her paws into the holes trying to get the objects that I place there. It came with 2 balls but I add other little toys and she loves to search for them.

This may look like wood in the photo, but it is medium density fiberboard coated with shellac. It is made in China. Concept is clever. Materials are different than description and reviews by those less aware suggest. It may require some airing out before the odor dissipates.

Rated 3 out of 5 by BeaHave The box is beautiful wood but the holes are too small
I love the wooden box. Its finished like fine furniture but the holes on the side don't line up vision wise with the top and all the holes are too small. It comes with soft foam balls the size of a ping pong ball and they just barely fit through the hole. I bought some tiny black, gray, and white rattle mice and there is just no visual excitement because he can't really see in the box, its so low he has to lay on his side to peek in and its just not worth it compared to his other toys. So... I'm using it to stuff all his toys into when I want to pick up his room. It might work for hard food treats but he can't eat hard food so that's out. I have a shoe box that I've made into almost the same thing and that he likes.

Bought this to encourage my cats to play more. Neither is overly interested. Younger cat (12 years old) will play with it for about 10 seconds, get bored and walk away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Gray1 Well-made and keeps the kitten intrigued, though not for long stretches at a time
The beauty of this toy is that you can stuff it with a variety of different objects, including food treats, which provide for a nice variety to keep the cat entertained. Our kitten, however, tends to have a rather shorter span of attention with it. He'd rather roll a ball or jump all over the tree from Chewy (Armarkat). But, this peek & play box does serve a purpose. A decent product overall.

Rated 3 out of 5 by DaveS Excellent for kittens.
My older kitten(six mnths) took time to get playing with toy. Had to cover side holes to make it challenging for her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cantrip cat was completely engrossed!
Have a young Cat that is VERY bright and like to play in cabinets etc, and it had become very difficult to keep her occupied.... Holes are large enough she can see the stuff so she HAS to get it out... its great put all kinds of stuff in the holes and it keeps her busy... plan on getting the larger one later.. great product and price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by wiserwoman A toy for all species
We got this toy for our very smart, very active cat. He is always looking for something new to occupy himself, and he really liked this box. He liked getting the balls out and when he got tired of that, we put cat treats in it and he went to work on those. Our dog was attracted by the smell of cat treats and came over to play as well. (Wish I could have gotten a picture of the two of them, it was pretty cute.) Two toys for the price of one!
