Description

If you want to get in a bike ride, but your pet isn’t up to it, you can still take them along. Perfect for cycling to the dog park - you get a workout there and back, and your pet stays safe while you’re on the road. For those who are nervous about leashing their pet to a bicycle - the HoundAbout II solves that problem and your pet will love the ride. Solvit's design features an extra-wide wheelbase and a lower center-of-gravity to provide outstanding ride stability and easier access for pets getting in and out of the cabin.

Special pockets hold plenty of gear including cellphones, keys, leash, water bottle, treats, and more. The front door on the trailer includes a zippered, mesh screen layer plus a zippered, clear vinyl layer to block wind and weather. Use them in different configurations depending on riding conditions. The over-sized sunroof provides ample airflow and room for pets to peek their heads out and look about. A removable, washable cushion keeps pets comfortable on long rides. Assembles quickly and folds down for easy storage or transport.

Key Benefits

  • Great for older pets or those with joint problems
  • Pets load easily through the zippered, rear door, and they can stick their head out and enjoy the breeze though the roomy sunroof
  • The safety leash and removable, washable cushion keep pets secure and comfortable on long rides
  • The 16-inch air-filled tires provide a smooth ride and are off-road capable (nothing too extreme)
  • Assembles quickly and folds down for easy storage

Cautions

These specially-designed wheel mounting brackets provide a wider wheel base and lower center of gravity, which reduces the chance of the trailer tipping over. However, this risk is still present, especially when the dog’s center of gravity is high (standing position) and/or when their weight shifts rapidly to one side of the trailer. A common example is when the dog is standing while the bicycle is turning, and the dog loses its balance and leans heavily against one side of the trailer. To minimize this risk, always reduce speed before making turns, and adjust the leash inside the trailer so the dog’s center of gravity stays low. Never tow the trailer without the hitch and hitch safety strap correctly connected! Always make sure the rear door is closed fully before towing the trailer.

Instructions

  • Attach the bicycle towbar:After all parts have been removed, position the main cabin of the trailer with the bottom side facing up. Locate the towbar mounting bracket which is welded to the frame; remove the pre-installed nut and bolt and the clevis pin (which is connected to the bolt with a black cord), but leave the black plastic spacer in place in the bracket. Position the towbar so the end with two holes fits into the plastic spacer and the hole at the end of the towbar aligns with the middle hole in the plastic spacer and the metal bracket. Re-install the bolt and nut through these holes taking care to keep the black cord from the clevis pin connected to the bolt. Lock the towbar into the “stowed” position by inserting the clevis pin through the mounting bracket, plastic spacer, and towbar and engage the hoop spring on the end of the clevis pin.

  • Attach the wheel mounting brackets and wheels: Insert the square tube section of one wheel mounting bracket into either end of the square tube which runs under the trailer, making sure the bracket extends above the bottom of the cabin. Align the hole in the bracket with the hole in the square tube; insert the bolt & nut and tighten using the hex wrench provided and an adjustable wrench. Repeat with remaining wheel mounting bracket. Turn the cabin over before moving to the next step. Insert the axle spindle of one wheel into the axle tube on the wheel mounting bracket while pressing down on the spring lock button. Push the wheel in so that the spindle is in all the way, then release the spring lock. Pull out on the wheel to check that the spring lock is engaged. Removal is the reverse of installation.

  • Erecting the cabin: The sides of the cabin frame are held in place by means of a roof support rod and two black plastic “star knobs”. With the wheels resting on the ground, rotate one side panel into a vertical orientation. Position the support rod inside the trailer so one star knob can be inserted through the hole in the fabric cover and frame tube on the side of the trailer and into the threads on the end of the support rod. Repeat with the other star knob on the other side of the trailer, and fully tighten both star knobs. Place the rectangular cushion in the floor of the cabin and attach the safety leash to one of the rear D-rings in the cabin. Finally, using a Phillips screwdriver, attach the two red reflectors to the lower rear panel of the trailer at the holes provided in the fabric shell.

  • Connecting to bicycle: The towbar connects to the bicycle via the included quick-connect hitch. Attach the hitch to the left side of the rear bicycle wheel by removing the axle nut, positioning the hitch on the axle, and re-tightening the axle nut. If your bicycle has a quick-release wheel, remove the quick-release pin from the axle, insert it through the hitch, then re-assemble through the axle. The hitch should be installed with the male connector piece facing back and angling away from the bicycle. To move the towbar from “stowed” position to “tow” position, remove the clevis pin from the mounting bracket, swing the towbar until it faces forward from the trailer, then reinsert the clevis pin in the forward holes in the mounting bracket. Position the trailer behind the bicycle so that the female connector on the towbar can slide over the male connector on the hitch. Lock these connectors in place with the clevis pin provided. Loop the black safety strap around the bike frame and attach the snap swivel to the D-ring on the towbar.

  • Loading and unloading pets: Load and unload pets only through the rear door, with the front window closed and the trailer attached to the bicycle. Have someone hold the bicycle firmly in an upright position, or lay the bicycle on its side. To load, assist the pet into the cabin and connect the safety leash to the pet’s collar. Adjust the length of this leash so the pet cannot exit through the front window when it is open. Always close the rear door before riding. Storing the trailer: Put the towbar into “stowed” position as described above. Unscrew the two star knobs and remove the support rod. Remove the wheels by pushing the buttons on the spring locks. The wheels can be stored inside the cabin if desired. Fold down the two sides of the cabin.

I'm not really sure why all products of this type are so darned expensive but I do really like the product. I ordered this and the stroller conversion kit because I have a puppy dog who is absolutely terrified of the whole world but I want to be able to take her on walks so I got this in the hopes that she might feel safer inside it. They also included a whole extra set of hardware to replace another one all in the same box instead of only sending the set that actually should be used. The labeling was confusing and I ended up having to do it all over again because I used the hardware that was included in the small bag itself instead of the extra set they sent in another little bag. Really confusing. The trouble with the awful instructions and inaccurate included items was super frustrating and annoying given how insanely expensive this thing is. Other than those things, I do really like the stroller and I hope we are able to get a ton of use out of it. In the end, if my baby is able to enjoy walks in the stroller then all of the frustration and cost will be fully worth it. Also really love that Chewy offered this product at a better price than anywhere else. … more

  • Excellent Trailer

    By on

This is an excellent trailer with three very minor flaws. First, the upper crossbar is a bit of a pain to install and time consuming. Not sure how to fix that but it does what it is supposed to do. Second, would be great if at least one tail light or a universal mount came with the trailer. The reflectors are fine but a light would be better. I ordered two small silicone lights which work great. Last issue is the collar attachment cable. Would be better if it was a Y type so dog could be anchored on both sides of trailer. I gave the trailer 5 stars because it folds easily, set up is easy even with the crossbar, it carries up to 130lbs, and it tows very easily. Hardly know it is behind me. Would I recommend this product? Meh. It could be much better, but it seems to be one of the better ones on the market. If you're crafty and open to making modifications, this may work for you. Cons: 1) the "floor" is just a piece of flimsy plastic, so it sags like crazy - my lab puppy is only 25 lbs so big dogs be forewarned 2) the inflatable "cushion" is useless - it slides straight to the tilted side immediately 3) it would be wonderful it it collapsed without having to disassemble it, 4) no suspension so it's a bumpy ride, 5) the wheels have a quick-coupler design which is nice, but it would be far better if the trailer arm was the same way; as it is now, you have to remove the Would I recommend this product? I was expecting more for how much this thing cost. I'm also curious to see how the wheels hold up; not looking forward to changing a flat or dealing with a full blow-out. I haven't even started looking for spare tubes, so hopefully that's not a challenge. If I keep it, I'll definitely be making some modifications to address its design flaws. I may even try modifying it so that it hooks to the seat post. … more

Well bought for one olde English Bulldogge named Ziggy who has severe hip displaysia an he has had surgery on one hip but it didn't take like vet had hoped so need to do a full hip replacement . Anywho I bought this with the plan to push him stroller style since I also bought stroller attatchment lol but before even getting it he hurt his knee an limped on an off. Vet recommended to have him take it easy an he seemed to improve than he hurt it again and he was really limping I couldnt take just having him rest so had xrays an he tore or ruptured his acl an so I have yet to try this stroller, but have taken it out of box an sadly for such a spendy pet product it came with a small tear in fabric Well bought for one olde English Bulldogge named Ziggy who has severe hip displaysia an he has had surgery on one hip but it didn't take like vet had hoped so need to do a full hip replacement . It is still usable but really NOT happy it came with a tear an it just seems like a tear could jeopardized the whole product if the tear gets bigger than it really will be useless. Seems like a sturdy trailer minus the tear an easy to assemble. Fyi tires do need air in them if you do not have an air pump. Also the cushion that goes in the trailer doesn't stay in place to well an I tried to have dog check out trailer without the wheel on an had cushion inside an he wouldn't go in took out the cushion an he happily went in granted my dog is a bit of a scardy pus but that cushion is terrible for this trailer for the price I figured they would have a better idea for comfort, or a slab of foam to stay in place better I don't know could be improved an atleast inspected better before leaving the warehouse where it was made. But I wasn't expecting my dog to need knee surgery before I even recieved but thats my fault not inspecting it right away but if tear does cause issues maybe manufacturer will replace the fabric doubt I'd be so lucky lol but you never know. But will be amazing to bring both dogs out together for a walk well one will be on a stroll lol … more

  • Solvit Solves It!

Very happy with this purchase. It's roomy enough for my two little dogs or my larger dog. Road testing it soon attached to the bike and separately this weekend with third wheel conversion kit. Easy to put together. Very excited for the opportunity to bring the pooches along safely for the bike rides! I may experiment with adding sturdier floor to the trailer just in case - especially for the larger dog. And I will add padding on top too.

  • Great for my 3-legged rescue dog

    By on

I adopted a 3 legged dog about 3 months ago. She gets around fine, especially running. But she is not a fan of walking far. This stroller has allowed me to venture out with her. We have not gone any further than a couple of blocks from home yet. She is pretty skittish, so it took me about 3 weeks before she would go in it on her own, but now she loves it. The only negative I have is that the directions aren't the best. A few more pictures to go along with the verbage would have helped tremendously. I also got the stroller attachment, so have not yet tried this on my bike as I wanted her to get used to it first. She weighs about 65-70 lbs and this is a perfect size. • Great Purchase

    By on

Love this cart. We are relatively new to biking and want to take our 50 lb pet along sometimes. We opted for the large cart and are glad we did. It gives her room to move around. Very easy to pull...large wheels make it roll easily. So far so good! We had our 95 lb dog in it...that would work fine as well with her head sticking out the top!

  • Love this trailer!

I just love this trailer! I wish I would have bought it years ago. It is easy to assemble, and easy to convert between the bike trailer and stroller. You can switch between the two within a few minutes. The trailer is well made, and is very reflective is you are riding after dark. The trailer has several pockets located on both sides for storage of leashes, bags, keys, etc. It also has a handy cup holder as well. I purchased the largest size trailer as I have a medium/large dog at 55lbs. This trailer pushes/pulls very easily. You really don't feel the weight at all. I have even put 2 dogs inside here increasing the total weight up the 65-70 lbs and you still really take tell you are pushing I just love this trailer! I wish I would have bought it years ago. My dogs just love going on rides/walks again. The only complaint, is the bed inside is a little slippery. I solved that issue by placing a piece of non slip cabinet liner under the bed and an old bath rug on top of it, to help hold it in place. That seemed to do the trick. • Ideal Doggy Wagon

    By on

This trailer, wagon / trolley is really ideal for a medium sized dog. Light, airy and spacious it fits easily to any bicycle and the animal is very comfortable, safe and secure. If the dog feels safe then it's a winner and this one is just that. I highly recommend this product. The only recommendation to the maker would be a better set of assembly instructions with diagrams, the current document is not very helpful at all !
