What is Cerenia for dogs?
Cerenia is an antiemetic, which means it can help prevent vomiting. For dogs, veterinarians may prescribe Cerenia to prevent vomiting from car sickness (motion sickness), or to safely and effectively treat acute vomiting.
Veterinarians also use Cerenia Injectable in dogs to help prevent vomiting before surgery when opioids are used as a pre-anesthetic.
Cerenia is available for dogs as a tablet you can give your dog at home to prevent car sickness or to extend the therapy time after your dog receives an injection. For acute vomiting, Cerenia is available as an injection that your veterinarian administers.
What is acute vomiting in dogs?
Many things can cause vomiting in dogs, including toxins, various drugs, diseases or even parasitic infections. And, well, we all know that dogs vomit sometimes. Acute vomiting is when vomiting suddenly happens and can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Many times, a dog may keep vomiting even after the stomach is empty of everything except bile. If your pet experiences acute vomiting, contact your veterinarian.
Does Cerenia cause drowsiness?
Cerenia is non-sedating, which means it doesn’t cause drowsiness. So when you reach your destination, your buddy will be his or her usual self. This is different from medications such as Benadryl and Dramamine, which may cause drowsiness and are not FDA-approved for vomiting in dogs.
What is the difference between Cerenia and Benadryl or Dramamine?
Cerenia is the first and only FDA-approved anti-vomiting medication for dogs. Unlike Benadryl and Dramamine, Cerenia doesn’t cause drowsiness, is available in multiple dosing sizes and has been clinically tested to safely prevent vomiting in dogs.
How does Cerenia work?
The active ingredient of Cerenia is maropitant citrate, a neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptor antagonist. Maropitant blocks the action of substance P — a neurotransmitter involved in vomiting — in the central nervous system. By blocking substance P from binding to the NK1 receptor, maropitant can prevent vomiting.
How long does Cerenia last?
Cerenia starts working quickly to prevent or treat your dog’s vomiting. It’s effective for about 24 hours.
What are the side effects of Cerenia?
In clinical studies of Cerenia, common adverse reactions noted were hypersalivation, drowsiness, lethargy, anorexia, and diarrhea.
How do I give my dog Cerenia?
The dose of Cerenia to be given depends on whether it is being prescribed to prevent vomiting from car sickness or to prevent acute vomiting at home. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for Cerenia as prescribed.
To prevent vomiting from car sickness, give your dog Cerenia with a small amount of food 2 hours before traveling. You can do this once a day for up to 2 days in a row.
To prevent acute vomiting at home, you can give Cerenia once daily:
- To puppies 2–7 months old, daily for up to 5 days in a row
- To dogs older than 7 months, daily for as long as prescribed by your veterinarian
Can I give Cerenia to my puppy?
To prevent vomiting from car sickness, you can give Cerenia to puppies 4 months and older. For prevention of acute vomiting, you can give Cerenia to puppies 2 months and older.
How often can I give Cerenia to my dog?
When using it to prevent vomiting from car sickness, you may give your dog Cerenia once a day for up to 2 days in a row.
For preventing acute vomiting at home, you can give Cerenia once daily:
- To puppies 2–7 months old, daily up to 5 days in a row
- To dogs older than 7 months, daily for as long as prescribed by your veterinarian
Where can I get Cerenia?
Cerenia is a prescription medication available through veterinarians. Talk with your veterinarian about whether Cerenia might help your pet.
What is Cerenia Injectable?
Cerenia Injectable is used to treat acute vomiting in dogs and cats. It will be administered to your pet at your veterinarian’s practice.
Veterinarians also use Cerenia Injectable to help prevent vomiting in dogs before surgery when opioids are used as a pre-anesthetic.

For Feline use too! Tummy upsets be-gone;))
My guy gets upset stomach from what. it is unknown. The vet exams, test, and xray, and sonogram show nothing of issue. Medicine is the only cure and Cerenia is my last at home option. It so far has worked really well. It is a medicine that is to be used here and there. If the issue persists I would need to take him to the vet. And so far Cerernia has prevented that need. He is much happier as I can now see when he is coming into trouble and thwart the condition. Wonderful!
This works
If your pup or kitty ever has excessive vomiting, whether bile or undigested food, this pill works to stop it. I have been using it for years on the many pups I have had over the last 40 years (though not frequently, thankfully). Also, Chewy will send your prescriptions immediately once they receive the information they need from the vet. I have been getting food, treats, and drugs from Chewy for years and Chewy is fantastic- - they send your order immediately and they have such a wide selection of items you might need for your pet. Thanks, Chewy!
I can't recommend Cerenia enough....
Our Violet had motility issues her entire life and we used Cerenia daily. It does the trick - every time, without fail and without wondering if it will. No, it's not made for daily use, but she had projectile multiple times a day without it. An expensive venture, to be sure. She was 89lbs and we used 60mg once a day... more than adequate. We have had to use it intermittently with other pups and all to the same end... it works. Perfectly.
I keep this on hand for all 4 of my dogs!
I started using this when my Labrador was a puppy ( he’s 6 now ) he had HORRIBLE car sickness from the day I brought him home , Vet thought he’d grow out of it but he never did . This was a “must have” before he ever rode in the car ( or he’d vomit everywhere!) I’d give it 45 min prior to trips . Sherlock ( my Labrador) is much better now but he still can’t do long trips without this medicine . I also learned my other dogs seemed to always want to get sick usually on weekends when I couldn’t go to vet This is a lifesaver if your dog vomits or is gone off his food ( like sick tummy) it has a bit of sedation to let them simply rest the day ! I noticed when I went to my vet for any digestive issues ( when vomiting occurred ) the first thing normally was a cerenia injection ! So I thought then I’d always have these on hand (like I keep Imodium for diarrhea ) this is a staple to keep in dogs medicine bag!
Lifesaver for nauseous dogs
This product has been a lifesaver for my dogs who have suffered from nausea and associated queasy stomach. It calms the tummy and takes the nausea away so my dogs feel better. I have not found that this product has any drawbacks or side effects and I make sure I always have this product in my home.
I t Works to stop spitting up water!!
My chihuahua was constantly spitting up water all day and coughing. Vet thought this might help him and sure enough, it does!! Jackie feels so much better.
Works Wonders
Prescribed by my vet for off label use to help with my 14 year old Papillon’s collapse trachea symptoms. Using for over almost month - he’s doing very well on this. Chewy is the BEST on ordering/mailing rx’s !
Great Medication
This is for Dogs but my Vet says it is OK for cats in small doses. I don't use it often but both my cat's have gut issues & especially my male vomits gut issues get bad. The medication helps them so well.
Great price!
Chewy has the best prices around, and no different for this medication. Would have cost me nearly 3 times the cost to purchase from my vet. Chewy also shipped it out so quickly!
Helps with sick feeling tummy
Yes. It works. However, it took about 2 hrs after administering the pill for my pup to want to eat. It really works
