can this chicken door be programmed with timer to open and close according to the time I set it? your description says it works with timer and light sensor. I do not want the light setting the time to open or close.
Answer by ChewyMar 10, 2021
This door features the ability to operate the door using 4 modes: Manual, Sensor, Timer and Lux+. When using the Timer mode, you can set a time when you'd like the door to open and close.

Can you hook a solar panel up to it?
Answer by ChewyDec 15, 2020
It is possible to connect the ChickenGuard to solar power but the manufacturer does not recommend it. The reason for this is that the ChickenGuard uses 4 x 1.5 volt batteries and when using a solar power it is not always possible to regulate the voltage that will go into the ChickenGuard. They also do not recommend using 9 volt batteries as this is too much power for the unit. There is an optional USB adapter, for external power (mains power), available directly through the manufacturer.

Does this have a delay option? Another words, can you have the auto light sensor set for dusk but have it delayed to close at a 1/2 hour past dusk?
Answer by ChewyNov 30, 2020
There is a delay setting you can use with the light sensor on our units. It is located in the "misc settings" and you can set delays up to 1 hour in 5 minute increments. You can do 5 Minutes or 25 Minutes or 45 Minutes or 1 hour depending on what you need.

Mixed emotions

I have mixed emotions regarding this purchase. This item was clearly returned by someone else. I had to work on getting the controllers prongs straight. They were flat against the board surface, and one of the screws size was missing. It looks like this was a reconditioned unit. They just did a pour job at it. There were two oaks of the controllers screws with gasket. It looks like everything is working fine now. I wish I did not have to spend my time fixing it and going to the store to purchase some screws before the install.

Works for me, but doesn't work as advertised

So the door opens with the sun and closes with dusk, which is great so I don't have to let out and close up my chickens. Works reliably and does a great job at this which is why I'm still giving it a pretty good star rating. There is also a timer option, but it only let me pick one single time, to either open or close but not both. Also there's supposed to be an option to use the daylight sensor and the timer sensor together, but did not appear in my option list. Install was pretty simple. One thing to be aware of is depending on the design of your poop opening, there could potentially be a slight gap between the door and the wall that you may have to figure out how to fill ( which was the case in our coop). Again this depends on your design however, I could see if we had built it differently how this would not have been an issue, and we were able to fill the gap with how we built it. Of course there is no sensor to stop the opening and closing if your chicken is in the way. But it is pretty slow.

Deserves a zero

I got this door at the end of July 2021. Absolutely not worth the price very cheaply made. The wires are very fragile and broke inside, I’m an electrician and soldered them back on but they broke again. After fixing the wire breaking a second time plastic that holds/connects to the batteries melted. I’m going to attempt to just hard wire it and hope that works.

Update for good service

So the string on this broke. Over and over. I wrote a pretty scathing review because I have so many things on my farm and this was the most unreliable. Both Chewey and the manufacturer reached out to offer satisfaction. The manufacturer sent (free of charge and rather quickly considering it had to cross the ocean) a new motor and string. I installed and its working so far. In a year the string may break again as it is the same string but I am impressed with how quickly both companies responded to my review.

When it works it works, but when it doesn't....

We bought four of these doors in July to help simplify the many chicken chores there are on our budding farm. They worked well for about four months, but we noticed as the nights got colder they started freezing up--the battery would die without warning, the wood on our coops would swell after a rain or light snow and that would throw the rail tension off. The batteries would need to be changed every 3-4 weeks. Well we had our first big freeze this past weekend and they all quit at once. I understand the limited capacity of batteries, and I anticipated having to troubleshoot this a bit, but it's becoming increasingly clear that these are not going to hold up to our cold winters, which is really when we need them most. The most frustrating thing is that there is no way to manually lock the door to stay open. We've had to rig a cord and a nail so the birds can go in and out during the day while the battery is dead. No use in replacing the batteries while we're in the negative the next few nights. So now we have four $200 fancy coop doors that we're having to manually open and close each day and use our own cord and nail to keep it open. I feel so silly for thinking these would work for us.

Very Slow to NO GO

This door was great at first then slowed down. We replaced the batteries and thought it would help. Only works now when I manually press the up or down button. which defeats the purpose of this item.

Automatic Door

Works ok but hard (confusing) to program. Still not comfortable that it works correctly so check it every morning and night. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

not waterproof as advertised

This works well however it is not waterproof even though the premium says it is. After about a week of having it up it stopped working after a light rain. Chewy is awesome and they replaced it no problem. I put a bucket up and then put it inside the bucket it works fine now.
