Cimetidine is prescribed to limit the production of stomach acid by blocking the action of histamine. It helps to treat ulcers that have already formed and helps to prevent future ulcers from forming. Cimetidine is also used in the treatment of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) and gastric or esophageal reflux. Customers may receive this drug under the name Tagamet.
Cimetidine is indicated for the treatment of specific ulcers, acid reflux diseases and heartburn. It may also be used to help prevent gastrointestinal bleeding.

Drug & Food Interactions
Cimetidine Tablets should not be used in pets with known allergies to cimetidine.
Symptomatic response to treatment with cimetidine does not preclude the presence of a gastric malignancy. There have been rare reports of temporary healing of gastric ulcers despite subsequently documented malignancy.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs, cats and horses.
