FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

    Great service, cat hates taste

By Beano on Oct 8, 2021

My vet was trying to talk me into going with an out of state pharmacy that wanted to charge me way more than Chewy for the medicine and then $28 for expedited shipping! The cust service rep with Chewy that handled my call was so sweet and helpful. I was impressed with how well she handled my "situation. HOWEVER, the medicine has a horrible odor, not the normal fishy odor tuna usually has, but a burn your nose hairs and make you wanna vomit, rotten smell. And my cat hates it. I either have to cover it up really well or shove it down his throat. Chewy is great though and I will never go anywhere else.

    Works great!

    By Amy79 on Sep 30, 2021

Sooo much cheaper than other places! I was a little worried at first because of the bad reviews regarding the bottle but it works just fine for me, no leaking or any issues at all. I got the tuna flavor but no fishy weird smell either. Will keep buying this!

A great savings, Lint loves it

By chippster on Jun 18, 2021

I was hesitant to purchase because of the reviews about the bottle not being a good fit, but the savings was hard to ignore. I have had no issues with my bottle topper, syringe, or anything to do with administration. I purchased the chicken flavor, and my cat will eat it right out of a bowl as if it was a treat. Lint gives it a 10/10.

    Don’t do it

By Jagger on Jun 28, 2021

I ordered this for my male Jagger( who buy the way loves tuna) he wouldn’t have anything to do with it. I tried it because it is considerably cheaper, but ended up going back to the vet’s version. I have no problems with getting him to eat his food using the Cisapride from the vet.

I star if Mew didn't need it

By LilyC on May 25, 2021

Like some one else wrote, the cap doesn't secure well & it sticks every where. Gets on your hands. The syringe is VERY difficult to read. The product has to be given to our Mew so I need it prescribed by a different compounding pharmacy. Had to take baby to E.R. & then 2 days later sent home with this script. Our Vet can get it compounded here.

    Needs a different bottle adapter

By Mary on Feb 15, 2021

3 stars reflects this particular product. Cisapride in general has been very helpful in managing my cat's constipation. Pros: - Cost effective. This is half the price that my local pharmacy charges. My cat will need this Rx for years, so that adds up fast. - Easy ordering helps ensure my cat never misses a dose Cons: - Unfortunate choice of bottle adapter. Cisapride needs to be shaken to ensure everything is mixed properly. The bottle adapter fits the syringe, but it isn't snug with the cap when closed, so shaking creates a mess and wastes medication. Please change the adapter to the self-sealing kind! - Flavor is less appealing to my cat than the local pharmacy options. She'll eat it mixed 3 stars reflects this particular product. Tuna loving cat hated the tuna flavor!

By Annie on Jan 26, 2021

This review reflects this particular product - not the efficacy of cisapride - as I've found cisapride to be an important tool for managing my cat's chronic constipation. First, the pro: this is a far more cost effective option than the compounded capsules or the pills that I can purchase from the vet. However, my tuna-loving Siamese cat absolutely hates the taste of this tuna flavored oil! As soon as it graces his tongue, he shakes his head so violently that I'm uncertain if any of the drug actually makes it to his stomach. Thus, as much as I hate pilling him, it looks like we'll be returning to that method of administration to ensure that he receives the full dose.

    Great product

By Cisapride on Jan 15, 2021

I like this product. It saves me 60 dollars a month. It is messy but it was messy from my local pharmacy also. My cat likes the tuna flavor way better than the no flavor from the local pharmacy. Thank you so much for making this product available.
