How long does the ice pack keep the food cold for?

The feeder keeping cold would depend on where the feeder is situated and the ambient temperature of the room, among other things. We would advise freezing an ice pack and placing it in the room where the feeder will be and monitoring it. It is not recommended to use it for more than 24 hours.
Does the lid close after a period of time or does it stay open until closed?

The lid of this feeder stays opened until closed again.
How do you know when the battery is low?

There is also an indicator on the back of the unit near the battery compartment where you can determine if the battery is still operating correctly. The gear in the indicator will turn once per second when the battery is still good, if it is turning slower, or has stopped, then the battery needs to be replaced. A good quality standard alkaline battery will last between 9 to 12 months.
Does the lid ding or ring when lid opens to let the cat know when food is available?

Thwarted safecracking cat

I had a similar version (I think by Petsafe) with two compartments, but one of my cats figured out how to turn the dials fairly quickly. It is the only smart thing she has ever done. The feeder was set to open overnight to dispense a few treats so the cats wouldn't try and wake the humans up too early in the morning, but she could sometimes open it as soon as we put it out. The rest of the time instead of opening it, she would hold the compartment lid down with one paw to stabilize it, and then turn with her other paw, so that she inadvertently turned way past the opening point and instead reset the timer to another 20 hours or something. This intermittent reinforcement (and sometimes total failure to get any snacks) just made her try harder and harder to open it. We started using masking tape to cover the dials with pieces of plastic. That helped for a while, then the cat learned to rip the tape off. Often there was tape and plastic carnage strewn all around the dining room in the morning, with tufts of black fur mixed in, and the feeder jammed upside underneath a chair or something. Once I found her walking around with the piece of plastic taped to the bottom of her paw like a really dumb snowshoe. Anyway, I gave up and bought this one because it said it was tamper-resistant and the shape of the dials looked more promising. So far a big win -- it's too heavy to scoot all around the room and I don't know if she's even tried to turn the dials, but if so she apparently hasn't succeeded!

Been using it daily

I bought this for my cat who eats wet food, with the steel dishes and I've been using this nearly everyday since I've got it. It like that I can continue feeding her the same meals even when I can't be there for her meal time, and I like using it even when i am home just to reduce the excitement of meal time. My cat is very food motivated, so she has try to bite the dish open, but it this bothers her a lot less than the dry food dispenser. I like that the food can stay cool with the cold pack. I would recommend everyone getting the steel dish for ease of cleaning. In regards to the timer, it's hard to be precise. so keep that in mind when you set it because it might take less or more time to open. I would recommend buying the steel dishes and an extra cold pack (so i can rotate which cold pack is being used and keeping one in the fridge)
