    A big hit!

By PitbullMom on Jan 25, 2018

My dog loves this food! I am trying to get some weight on my old guy, so like that it is higher in calories. Only reason for 4 stars is I wish Dave's would stop using carrageenan in all their foods. The 95% varieties don't have it. So I will only order those.

This was a no go for me and my dog.

I'm just now getting around to reviewing this. I try to review everything I buy here, but this one slipped through the cracks. My dog requires a high-protein, low-carb diet, and I was excited to have him try this food. 95% meat, No carrageenan, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. My dog requires a high-protein, low-carb diet, and I was excited to have him try this food. 95% meat, No carrageenan, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. I really thought it would be a winner, but nope. It seems like the cans are full of fat, and it really stinks. It doesn't smell anything like turkey or meat for that matter, and my dog seems to agree. He's not picky about canned food, but this one was not a hit. He very reluctantly eats it, but isn't happy about it. We slowly got through about half the case, but I still have 6 or 7 cans that I'll probably donate to a dog who might like them better. I won't buy this again, and am now reluctant to try the other Dave's 95% meat flavors. … more

  • Changed recipe, now she won't eat it

I have been feeding my old dog this particular brand and flavor for quite a time and she previously ate well. Since the change in recipe, swapping in agar-agar for the carrageenan, she has tapered off and it is quite a struggle getting her to eat. Now she is old, 17.5, and picky, so that is part of I am sure. I have noticed a texture change, it now tends to be mushy and sticky. Time to look for a new canned food, I'll buy single cans at the pet store to see if I can find another winner for her.

This did not work out for my diabetic dog, the food is too watery/wet and must be mixed with dry food. But I like the grain free aspect of it. It's still pretty mushy when mixed with dry food.

  • not 4 overweight dogs

I bought this because it came up when I searched for canned foods for weight control in dogs. It may be high in protein, but the calories, which Chewie does not include in its product descriptions, are not what I call low. At nearly 500 calories per can it misses my goal of under 350 by a wide margin. My dog likes it so I won't send it back, but I certainly won't buy it again.

The dogs seem to like it. I usually mix canned with their kibble. They seem to prefer this not mixed.
