Diphenhydramine HCI, commonly known as Benadryl is an antihistamine prescribed to help relieve allergy symptoms. Some of these symptoms may include coughing and itching caused by insect bites, pollen, house dust along with other allergy triggers. This medication may also help control vomiting and motion sickness and may be prescribed as a mild sedative to help treat muscle tremors caused by toxins or other medications. Customers may receive this drug under the names Benadryl (Warner Lambert), Histacalm (Virbac).
Temporarily relieves symptoms due to upper respiratory allergies, such as itching skin, sneezing and itchy, watery eyes.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects of diphenhydramine include drowsiness, dry mouth and urinary retention. Vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported in rare cases.
Drug & Food Interactions
Always tell your vet about other medications the pet is taking. The capsule should not be mixed or dissolved in food.
Do not use this medication in those allergic to it or other antihistamines. Do not use in those with glaucoma, prostate disease, urinary obstruction and high blood pressure. Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Use with caution when given with other CNS (central nervous system)-depressant drugs, such as tranquilizers or barbiturates. Always tell your vet what other medications the pet is taking.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
