Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use FURminator brand hair care, hygiene and waterless products?

Each of the Ultra Premium Shampoo and Conditioner formulas have been specially formulated to help eliminate odors, provide relief for pet's with itchy skin, bring out the natural shine in light and dull color coats, release tangles in long coats or moisturize the skin and coat with frequent bathing.

The FURminator shampoos are recommended for use every 4-6 weeks. The products are safe to use more frequently, but the majority of indoor pets do not need to be bathed more often than that.

To use:

Wet coat. Gently lather FURminator shampoo over entire body and leave on for at least 5 minutes to help penetrate to the skin. Thoroughly rinse and repeat if necessary.

Follow with FURminator conditioner. Gently lather and leave on for at least five minutes before rinsing completely. Make sure your pet is completely dry before using the FURminator deShedding Tool.

FURminator also offers hair care and hygiene products that can be used between baths. Each of the natural formulas are gentle to the pet's skin and were developed for frequent use. The deShedding Waterless Spray and deOdorizing Waterless Spray help to reduce excess shedding and neutralize odors between baths. The deTangling Waterless Spray helps release tangles for easy brushing.

Can I use FURminator Ultra Premium Shampoo and Conditioner after giving my dog a flea or tick treatment?

The FURminator Ultra Premium Shampoos, Conditioner and Waterless Sprays should not affect the topical flea and tick preventatives when used as directed by the topical preventative. Each flea and tick preventative works differently, so it is important to read the instructions on the box and apply the topical preventative as directed before or after a bath. Most topical preventatives suggest waiting 3-5 days before and after a bath to apply the product.

The FURminator line of hair care products are mild and do not contain "stripping" ingredients that would remove the flea and tick topical preventative. The majority of the flea and tick preventatives are held in the skin pores and require aggressive cleaning or "degreasing" to affect their performance.

Don't Dread the Shed

Shedding—it seems like a losing battle that pet parents can never win. It's true that you'll never stop your precious furballs from shedding, but you can reduce the amount of hair that gets all over with the FURminator deShedding Tool. Designed by a professional groomer, this ingenious tool reaches beyond the topcoat to remove loose hair from the undercoat. It gently pulls away the dead hair without hurting your pet's skin or damaging the protective undercoat.

Don't Dread the Shed
The Gentle Grooming Solution

The Gentle Grooming Solution

When you can tell everywhere your pet's been just by the hair trail left behind, it's time for FURminator to step in. Their popular deShedding Tool won't scratch the skin, and you can even use it on the ears and tail. Instead of cutting the undercoat, it only removes the hair that's already loose. With 10-20 minute sessions just once or twice a week, you can reduce matting and bring out the coat's natural shine.

Less Hair, Less Work

FURminator deShedding Tools help you cut down on your vacuuming time by reducing your pets' shedding up to 90%. Believe it or not, the hair that you find all over the house—clinging to the furniture and your clothes, and hiding in corners with its "tumble-hair" buddies is mostly from your pet's undercoat. This hair gets trapped under the topcoat and then sheds pretty much everywhere—unless you have a handy FURminator!

Less Hair, Less Work
The FURminator Advantage

The FURminator Advantage

There are tons of deshedding tools on the market, but the FURminator is recommended by vets and professional groomers worldwide because it gives real results. The stainless steel edge has special compact teeth that push through the topcoat and gently rake away loose hairs. A convenient FURejector button releases the hair from the tool so it doesn't build up on the deShedding edge. Plus, the easy-grip handle is comfortable for longer grooming sessions.

To be honest, I think it's a toss-up. Herschel, being a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, sheds like his life depends on it. I mean, no matter how much or often we brush him, there always seems to be a layer of fur that we somehow missed! After waking up to a pillow covered in pillow (ugh) for several days, enough is enough... we were willing to try anything to get a hold of his shedding. We already use the Furminator to brush him, so I figured it's worth a shot to try their de-shedding shampoo. We thoroughly massaged the shampoo through all layers of his fur, just like the directions recommended, then rinsed. The enzymes sort of make his coat dry and squeaky, but he did smell really lovely and tropical. To be honest, I think it's a toss-up. • This Shampoo Works!

This is a great shampoo to help with the never ending problem of shedding. My Black Lab sheds a lot! After reading all the reviews about this product, I decided to try it. The amount of hair that came off after 1st shampoo was unbelievable! Great scent too! I also loved the end result of the Conditioner which left his coat silky and shiny. I plan to continue using this product. The price is great too!

  • Better than petsmart

Took my English lab for a deshedding in April earlier this year and spent $60 for the treatment. This shampoo along with the conditioner did WAY BETTER than they did. I could tell a huge difference when she was dry because her tail was way less bushy and she dried really fast without all of the undercoat retaining the water. So much hair came off of her and there is less in the house (does not stop shedding completely, there is still some that comes off but brushing will help). I will reccomend this shampoo/conditioner combo forever and refer people to chewy as it is the lowest price anywhere.

My dog has shed way less the past two weeks since we used this shampoo. We followed the directions and rubbed him down longer than usual and we even used the conditioner after. I would highly recommend the combination of these products.

  • Amazing product

This shampoo made my lab look skinny and beautiful, plus she stopped shedding so much during shedding season. If you have a big dog and they are shedding a lot, make sure to get a hair strainer for your bathtub while bathing because this shampoo works really well and I had to pull a bunch of hair out of the drain, which normally is not that much.

I've seen some of the reviews about this saying they're not sure why this product got such great reviews and I'm wondering how they didn't have a great experience with it. We have what we think is a pit bull/hound mix, but I'm pretty sure he's mixed with a husky somewhere because he sheds like crazy and has an undercoat that is impossible to be keep under control. He'll run and you can see fur just flying off of him. We brush him daily and still...fur everywhere. On my floors, on my clothes, it's even on my stove, how does it get on my stove!? We paid an extra $30 at the groomer for "deshed" treatments and I thought life would be so much easier but no, $65 later and THERE'S STILL FUR. So after buying multiple brushes, paying a groomer for pretty much nothing, I took a leap of faith on a $6 bottle of shampoo and thank the heavens above. CLUMPS were falling off. My best advice: brush your dog out VERY well prior to using this. While it's sitting, actually work it into the fur for the whole 10 minutes if they can stand it that long, get it in there good and everywhere. I used a regular brush to brush the shampoo and conditioner in even more after I had scrubbed it in with my hands. Definitely use the conditioner (I saw just as much hair coming off as I did with the shampoo so I'm glad we toughed it out despite my dog getting antsy) and do the same, work it in well for the entire 10 minutes and use a brush. Blow dry your dog while brushing them if they'll let you, it helps get those loose hairs out too. You should definitely have a drain catcher for the hair if you're not doing this outside or plan to use a lot of draino afterwards. After cleaning the hair catcher in the tub about 10 times, I'm pretty sure we had enough fur to make a few chihuahuas. My dog physically looked skinnier. I love this stuff, it's made housekeeping for me a lot easier. … more

We have a 7 month old monster of a lab already weighing in at 70 #'s. He is a big boy and was shedding like crazy. I had to vacuum and sweep every day some times twice a day. This shampoo smells amazing and has decreased the shedding tremendously.

My dog has short wire hair and seems to shed constantly no matter what I do. Its far thicker than what it looks. Hair is every place so I decided to take the plunge and try this. It must be kept on for approx 10 minutes. I rub his coat and worked it through the whole time we waited for it to do its magic. I have never seen so much hair come out in my life! The water in my bath tub was black due to the extreme amount of fur coming off of him. Then I followed up with the conditioner and waited the 10 mins again. It came out in clumps in my hands.
