  • EXCELLENT! Product - READ THE BAG!

    By on Top 500 Contributor

We have been using this product for various uses for 5 years. I see many reviews that say "where's the meat!" Obviously these pet parent's haven't read the back of the bag. This is a ground product, thoroughly mixed so that the dog gets all of the ingredients in every bite without you having to shake or mix the bag every time you feed, but as the back of the bag CLEARLY states, they are very proud of the highest possible quality, human grade ingredients used in their product and show the quality of the meat used in the product, most of which is ground into and mixed in with the other ingredients, however, representative chunks of meat are placed on top of the bag so that you can see the high We have been using this product for various uses for 5 years. This is a ground product, thoroughly mixed so that the dog gets all of the ingredients in every bite without you having to shake or mix the bag every time you feed, but as the back of the bag CLEARLY states, they are very proud of the highest possible quality, human grade ingredients used in their product and show the quality of the meat used in the product, most of which is ground into and mixed in with the other ingredients, however, representative chunks of meat are placed on top of the bag so that you can see the high quality, freeze dried meat used in your pets food, as nearly all of the meat indicated in the protein section of the nutrition profile is ground into the product. This is clearly stated on the back of the 10LB bag on the left hand corner under "Ingredient Sourcing" and on the side of the 3LB bag. Those extra pieces crumble easily if you want to add them to the food but personally, I take them out and add them to my treat jar! They make great, high value treats and are often so big in the 10LB bags, that I break them into smaller pieces for treating. There's no reason to add them to the food as the food already contains ample amounts of meat even though you cant easily see it because its finely ground. I switch back and forth between the venison and Pork varieties. I use the pork most often because it is less expensive but sometimes my boys just get bored and it's time for a switch, I use this primarily as a "gravy" and reconstitute it with more water than is used for the "food" instructions - think gravy for mashed potatoes - approximately 1/4 cup Lucy's to 2/3 cup water for 1 cup of kibble. My kids think they're getting an extra special meal (this stuff smells like Sunday dinner!) and lick their bowls clean, rather than picking at their food and leaving half of it in their dish. This is also an EXCELLENT product to wean puppies on! because it is a SOFT product and you can control the consistency - the pork variety has 34% protein and 14% fat and 469 calories per cup - pups can grow healthy and strong on this! for puppies, I re hydrate it with goat milk! for the added, needed calcium, thereby turning it into an appropriate puppy food! SO YES - read the bag, there is LOTS of meat in this food. all 5 of my kids wait with baited breath for meal time, WARNING - Grandma Lucy, like all grandmothers, spoils her grandbabies! Once you start using this stuff, you're very likely to be stuck with it. I have found that using it as a gravy over kibble, ESPECIALLY for large dogs where it just takes TOO MUCH water to re hydrate and "overfills" the dog when used as a sole food is preferable. With small dogs, they seem to be fine either way and with very elderly small dogs, it can really be a lifesaver! It's a great way for me to ensure my dog's finish their meal and to keep weight on my skinny, high metabolism Standard Poodle who not only needs encouragement to finish his meals but also needs the extra calories. If your dog doesn't need the extra calories, just reduce the kibble a bit. … more

  • Where is the venison?

    By on

Although it smells great, there is hardly any venison in it. Not to mention my dog has to eat so much of it and is still not gaining weight. Disappointed.

My 2 GSP'S love this food. The ingredients are all natural and human grade. It is very easy store and is awesome to travel with since it doesn't weigh very much. Just add hot water and serve.

  • Smells like Thanksgiving

    By on

Our 11 year-old lab was anemic so (after medical attention) we switched her to Grandma Lucy. She loves it and it helped her get better. Her coat shines and she stopped scratching and chewing her feet. Our Golden R. puppy will not eat her food unless we sprinkle some Grandma Lucy over her food for flavor. Unfortunately the 10lb bag does not last as long as we hoped so it is too expensive for us.

  • Smells so good

    By on

My young westie has allergies and has been on a restricted diet, but she never liked what was prescribed even with me cooking venison and using the stock with the kibble. Now she can't wait for her meals and never leaves a drop.

  • Long shelf life

    By on

We have 3 labs and they all like it. I am getting another bag in case of emergency although we never run out of dog food. I would buy it on a more regular basis if it had more venison. A few pieces here and there does not make me a fan. The picture shows way more than actual.

  • My Cairn wouldn't eat this food

    By on

She picked/pushed it around. Ate a couple bites with my coaching. Spit the prices of carrot out next to her bowl. I think it had a funky smell compared to others we've tried. WAY Too expensive to "try". Was recommended to be by others.... Very unhappy my cairn doesn't like smell/taste. Only one cup used out if brand new bag?!? What a waste. My animal shelter doesn't even want it as a donation. Odd?!?
