Customer Reviews

Grandma Lucy's Artisan Grain-Free Venison Freeze-Dried Dog Food is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT! Product - READ THE BAG! We have been using this product for various uses for 5 years. I see many reviews that say "where's the meat!" Obviously these pet parent's haven't read the back of the bag. This is a ground product, thoroughly mixed so that the dog gets all of the ingredients in every bite without you having to shake or mix the bag every time you feed, but as the back of the bag CLEARLY states, they are very proud of the highest possible quality, human grade ingredients used in their product and show the quality of the meat used in the product, most of which is ground into and mixed in with the other ingredients, however, representative chunks of meat are placed on top of the bag so that you can see the high quality, freeze dried meat used in your pets food, as nearly all of the meat indicated in the protein section of the nutrition profile is ground into the product. This is clearly stated on the back of the 10LB bag on the left hand corner under "Ingredient Sourcing" and on the side of the 3LB bag. Those extra pieces crumble easily if you want to add them to the food but personally, I take them out and add them to my treat jar! They make great, high value treats and are often so big in the 10LB bags, that I break them into smaller pieces for treating. There's no reason to add them to the food as the food already contains ample amounts of meat even though you cant easily see it because its finely ground. I switch back and forth between the venison and Pork varieties. I use the pork most often because it is less expensive but sometimes my boys just get bored and it's time for a switch, I use this primarily as a "gravy" and reconstitute it with more water than is used for the "food" instructions - think gravy for mashed potatoes - approximately 1/4 cup Lucy's to 2/3 cup water for 1 cup of kibble. My kids think they're getting an extra special meal (this stuff smells like Sunday dinner!) and lick their bowls clean, rather than picking at their food and leaving half of it in their dish. This is also an EXCELLENT product to wean puppies on! because it is a SOFT product and you can control the consistency - the pork variety has 34% protein and 14% fat and 469 calories per cup - pups can grow healthy and strong on this! for puppies, I re hydrate it with goat milk! for the added, needed calcium, thereby turning it into an appropriate puppy food! SO YES - read the bag, there is LOTS of meat in this food. all 5 of my kids wait with baited breath for meal time, WARNING - Grandma Lucy, like all grandmothers, spoils her grandbabies! Once you start using this stuff, you're very likely to be stuck with it. I have found that using it as a gravy over kibble, ESPECIALLY for large dogs where it just takes TOO MUCH water to re hydrate and "overfills" the dog when used as a sole food is preferable. With small dogs, they seem to be fine either way and with very elderly small dogs, it can really be a lifesaver! It's a great way for me to ensure my dog's finish their meal and to keep weight on my skinny, high metabolism Standard Poodle who not only needs encouragement to finish his meals but also needs the extra calories. If your dog doesn't need the extra calories, just reduce the kibble a bit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Where is the venison? Although it smells great, there is hardly any venison in it. Not to mention my dog has to eat so much of it and is still not gaining weight. Disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful product! I HIGHLY recommend this dog food. Our boxer developed allergies to...everything about a year and a half ago. Constant scratching, twitching, major hair loss. The scratching was so bad that he ended up with sores all over his face, ears and paws. After trying many different foods, our vet recommended pure venison (absolutely no other animal fats or fish of any kind). The only food we found was California Natural. It made a huge difference but did not completely stop the itching and he continued to lose hair. As luck would have it, that dog food was recalled. I could not find any other alternative dog food that didn't have any other animal fats/proteins, but our pet store had one small bag of this Artisan Grain-Free Venison Freeze-Dried Dog Food and so we tried it (we had no other options after all - I was very skeptical when I bought it). First of all - he LOVES the food. I mean LOVES it. But most importantly, it COMPLETELY fixed his itching, twitching and all of his hair grew back. It took about a week for the scratching to stop and about another 3 weeks for all of his hair to grow back. I don't know what the magic ingredient is in this food - I say the garlic :) - or if it's just a combination of it all, but it has seriously changed our dog's life (and ours!). He's back to his normal, happy self. Again, I HIGHLY recommend this food for any dog that has allergies!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dog's love it and are thriving We have been doing a lot of research on dog (& cat) food for our four dogs and a cat. We can't afford to do raw and since both my husband and I work full-time we don't have time to cook for our pets, so we try to figure out the best food for them that reasonably fits within our budget. We've tried different dehydrated and freeze-dried foods and have been very pleased with Grandma Lucy's. The 10 lb. bags produce a really large volume of food. The price is comparatively very reasonable when you look at competitor brands. The food reconstitutes very quickly and looks and smells like real food. I have noticed some complaints about seeing a lot of potato flakes and not very much meat. If you read the bag or look at the Grandma Lucy website, you can see that the protein levels are average or above average compared to other similar foods. I think the Venison has 28% protein, and other varieties are in that same ballpark. Pork is significantly higher at 39%. The meat is ground very finely and you can't see most of it. They do leave a few pieces behind and their rationale is so you can see the quality of meat that is used. Our dogs have been doing exceptionally, noticeably well on this food. Their eyes are bright and their coats are healthy, soft, and shining. We have a 13-year old Westie who is exhibiting more energy than we can remember, and who seemingly has overcome all of his skin and allergy problems through diet. We rotate GL varieties and we mix the GL food half and half with premium dry kibble. I also like the fact that from what I have read, Grandma Lucy has never been involved in a recall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dogs Love it! We have two mixed-terrier breeds (15-17 lbs each) and were looking for a grain-free, natural, no-filler, USA made dog food that was easy to prepare. After receiving a recommendation from a friend who fosters shelter dogs, we tried Grandma Lucy's Venison dog food and couldn't be happier. Both dogs love it. One has a sensitive stomach and we saw an improvement in his digestion within a week. Both dogs are noticeably "regular" and their energy levels have increased. A bit pricey but feel it's worth it if their tummies are feeling good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Long shelf life We have 3 labs and they all like it. I am getting another bag in case of emergency although we never run out of dog food. I would buy it on a more regular basis if it had more venison. A few pieces here and there does not make me a fan. The picture shows way more than actual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smells like Thanksgiving Our 11 year-old lab was anemic so (after medical attention) we switched her to Grandma Lucy. She loves it and it helped her get better. Her coat shines and she stopped scratching and chewing her feet. Our Golden R. puppy will not eat her food unless we sprinkle some Grandma Lucy over her food for flavor. Unfortunately the 10lb bag does not last as long as we hoped so it is too expensive for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is very easy to make and smells wonderful. My 2 GSP'S love this food. The ingredients are all natural and human grade. It is very easy store and is awesome to travel with since it doesn't weigh very much. Just add hot water and serve.
