Feeding Instructions

Individual requirements may vary depending on pre-existing nutritional status and medical condition. In patients where normal G.I. function has been compromised by anorexia, a three-day transitional feeding strategy may be necessary.

  • Day One 1/3 of daily caloric intake with 2/3 water dilution
  • Day Two 2/3 of daily caloric intake with 1/3 water dilution
  • Day Three Entire daily caloric intake

Select a feeding schedule based on the following patient criteria:

  • Schedule 1 Cage Rest
  • Schedule 2 Surgery, Sepsis, Cancer, Trauma, Fever, Feline Hepatic Lipidosis
  • Schedule 3Severe Burn, Injury or Head Trauma

The following daily intakes are intended as a guide and should be adjusted as needed to achieve or maintain optimum body weight. Divide into three to six equal daily feedings to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. (1 can = 150 ml.)

Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

  • A lifesaver

I recently took in my late aunt's special needs cat. For a variety of reasons, he was close to death when I got him. Kitten milk, a/d, and a syringe helped me to save his life. I keep it on hand for days that he just isn't interested in eating much.

It was very convenient to be able to have this food shipped directly to my home rather than making a special trip to the vet to obtain it.

  • Great for Ailing Pets

    By on

We have a dog who has lymphoma and is not getting chemo. We heard that a high protein diet can slow the progression of the cancer and were directed to get this food. She is loving it and it's kept her perky for much longer than we expected! I would highly recommend it.

  • EXCELLENT PATABILITY

    By on

If you have an elderly cat or dog that is not eating. This food can be fed from a large syringe, as it is very fine in texture. Most of the time, just the smell of the canned food, will stimulate my cats appetite. My Vet was wise to prescribe this food, for my 17 plus year old cat. Brings his appetite back. The syringe feeding may be needed first, to help get the animals strength up. Very calorie dense too. I always have this food in the house, for sick, weak, or very old animals that go off their diet.

  • My Cat LOVES This

    By on

My cat loves this so much I just add her medications to the food and she laps it all straight from a bowl. Her appetite has improved since feeding her a/d. If she gets to the point where she won't eat on her own, the consistency is smooth enough for me to easily force feed via syringe feedings. The only con is the high price.

If your vet gives your cat/dog a prescription for this, it's only because he/she is ill. As a pet parent, we all know how stressful it is when your pet won't eat and loses weight when they need the strength to fight whatever illness they have. I'm glad Science Diet makes this in those emergency times. My cat has recently lost a lot of weight really fast, diagnosis still unknown. But having this AD really help prevent further weight lost. • Prescription AD

    By on

Our 14-year-old cat stopped eating and lost a lot of weight. I was afraid we were going to lose him. He had always eaten dry CD, but the vet put him on canned AD. He loved it and began eating again so we decided to keep him on AD along with dry CD. He's doing well now so he will eat AD as long as he lives.
