Cats and dogs can undergo significant metabolic changes when recovering from a serious illness, injury or surgery. During these stressful conditions the body is challenged to maintain strong natural defenses and spare lean body mass, which makes it is even more important to feed the right food. Cats and dogs need extra energy and nutrients, in an appetizing form, to encourage the recovery process. At Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to help dogs and cats in recovering process.

Key Benefits

  • Highly digestible ingredients and extra calories to help during recovery from serious illness, accident and surgery
  • Highly digestible proteins to help wound and tissue healing, preserving lean body mass and promoting a healthy immune system
  • Developed with extra calories and increased level of potassium to help avoid depletion
  • Highly palatable with a soft consistency aids acceptance by inappetant pets and gives flexibility in feeding -- by bowl, spoon, syringe or feeding tube
  • Cats and dogs need extra energy and nutrients to encourage the recovery process and this recipe does just that in an appetizing form

Feeding Instructions

Individual requirements may vary depending on pre-existing nutritional status and medical condition. In patients where normal G.I. function has been compromised by anorexia, a three-day transitional feeding strategy may be necessary.

  • Day One 1/3 of daily caloric intake with 2/3 water dilution
  • Day Two 2/3 of daily caloric intake with 1/3 water dilution
  • Day Three Entire daily caloric intake

Select a feeding schedule based on the following patient criteria:

  • Schedule 1 Cage Rest
  • Schedule 2 Surgery, Sepsis, Trauma, Fever, Feline Hepatic Lipidosis
  • Schedule 3Severe Burn, Injury or Head Trauma

The following daily intakes are intended as a guide and should be adjusted as needed to achieve or maintain optimum body weight. Divide into three to six equal daily feedings to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. (1 can = 150 ml.)

Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

  • Eating again

This got my (sick) cat eating again, after he had suddenly begun turning up his nose at all of his usual prescription food. I started with a few cans from my veterinarian's office, but am now already halfway through the case I ordered from Chewy.

  • A lifesaver

I recently took in my late aunt's special needs cat. For a variety of reasons, he was close to death when I got him. Kitten milk, a/d, and a syringe helped me to save his life. I keep it on hand for days that he just isn't interested in eating much.

  • My cat is enjoying this special food.

It was very convenient to be able to have this food shipped directly to my home rather than making a special trip to the vet to obtain it.

  • My Cat LOVES This

    By on

My cat loves this so much I just add her medications to the food and she laps it all straight from a bowl. Her appetite has improved since feeding her a/d. If she gets to the point where she won't eat on her own, the consistency is smooth enough for me to easily force feed via syringe feedings. The only con is the high price.
