Feeding Instructions

Individual requirements may vary depending on pre-existing nutritional status and medical condition. In patients where normal G.I. function has been compromised by anorexia, a three-day transitional feeding strategy may be necessary.

  • Day One 1/3 of daily caloric intake with 2/3 water dilution
  • Day Two 2/3 of daily caloric intake with 1/3 water dilution
  • Day Three Entire daily caloric intake

Select a feeding schedule based on the following patient criteria:

  • Schedule 1 Cage Rest
  • Schedule 2 Surgery, Sepsis, Cancer, Trauma, Fever, Feline Hepatic Lipidosis
  • Schedule 3Severe Burn, Injury or Head Trauma

The following daily intakes are intended as a guide and should be adjusted as needed to achieve or maintain optimum body weight. Divide into three to six equal daily feedings to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. (1 can = 150 ml.)

Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

  • EXCELLENT PATABILITY

    By on

If you have an elderly cat or dog that is not eating. This food can be fed from a large syringe, as it is very fine in texture. Most of the time, just the smell of the canned food, will stimulate my cats appetite. My Vet was wise to prescribe this food, for my 17 plus year old cat. Brings his appetite back. The syringe feeding may be needed first, to help get the animals strength up. Very calorie dense too. I always have this food in the house, for sick, weak, or very old animals that go off their diet.

  • It Helps In Those Times of Need

If your vet gives your cat/dog a prescription for this, it's only because he/she is ill. As a pet parent, we all know how stressful it is when your pet won't eat and loses weight when they need the strength to fight whatever illness they have. I'm glad Science Diet makes this in those emergency times. My cat has recently lost a lot of weight really fast, diagnosis still unknown. But having this AD really help prevent further weight lost. The advantage of this product is it can be fed in a syringe when your fur child is too ill to eat on their own. The more you stir it, the runnier it gets, allowing for syringe feeding. • great for sick and old cats

    By on Top 1000 Contributor

At 16 1/2 years, my oldest cat is hanging in there. some days are better than others. She loves her Fancy Feast Medley most of the days. On those days when she feels a bit puny, I give her the A/D. The texture is easier to eat for old kitty teeth, and in case of emergency, this food can be fed through a syringe. Per our vet, A/D is better nutrition than the grocery store brands, too.

  • Good,high calorie food

    By on

I can't really say if my kitty likes this because I use it to syringe feed when he won't eat. It has a more calories then most foods,is easy to prepare for syringe feelings and has quality ingredients.I don't understand why Hills insists on a doctor's prescription to buy it,I guess it's a marketing statagy but I understand there's a class action lawsuit about this.

  • This product is keeping my yorkie alive.

    By on

I have a 1 lb 9 oz Yorkie she originally weighed 2 lbs but had to have all of her teeth pulled and this is the only food she will eat. She has been eating it for 3 years and while she hasn't gained any weight, she hasn't lost anymore either.
