Description

As dogs age, they may require food designed to help reduce nutrient excesses that could be harmful to their system. For example, high levels of sodium, phosphorus and protein can cause increased workload in the kidneys and heart. Kidneys are very important to the health of your dogs because they remove waste substances from the blood and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. The heart is the most important organ in your pet's body, and factors such as age or weight may affect its function. Poor heart health can affect your dog's lifestyle and mood. Because the food your dog eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being, at Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health.

Key Benefits

  • Clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health
  • Reduced phosphorus helps minimize stress on aging kidneys and reduced sodium helps maintain normal blood pressure
  • Reduced protein and targeted levels of high quality protein help decrease kidney workload
  • Optimal fat levels to reduce pancreatic workload
  • Increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids and controlled calories support kidney health

  • Special RX diet g/d

My 12-year-old spaniel had been on k/d RX diet for years. Now has developed chronic pancreatitis and the k/d was no longer suitable. The g/d was prescribed to accommodate both kidney and low-fat needs. It did not seem as palatable as the k/d she was used to. But, she has gotten used to it. It has been about a month and so far, she seems to be feeling better. Other than diet, there is no treatment. It is expensive and does not come in a larger size. Vet said g/d is higher in fiber than the k/d and is sometimes used for weight loss which seems likely to me as it does not appear as dense. • Hills G/D dry food

    By on

My 45 lb dog really likes this food, I have to wet the food, to soften it, as the chunks are too large for her to chew, she's missing teeth. Would give it 5 stars if the food came in a bigger bag, and the bites were smaller, cheaper would be good also.

  • not tasty, but necessary

    By on

If my 13-year-old Pit didn't have both pancreatic and renal issues I'd have a choice of tastier, more varied, less expensive dog kibble and I'd rate this stuff 1-star. It's crumbly and unappetizing-looking. But she does, so I don't, and for that reason I'm intensely grateful to Hills for doing the research to produce this product and I'd glad to pay whatever it costs.

  • Great customer service

My vet said to try this on my older min pin. I have been feeding it for over a year with no problems. However my last bag I ordered my dog didn't want to eat it, I called Chewy & they quickly sent out another bag of it to try! They even waived the shipping charge I will continue to order from them & I tell all my friends about them. The one problem I have is I wish it came in a smaller kibble size for a 9 lb dog with only a few teeth it's a little big.
