As dogs age, they may require food designed to help reduce nutrient excesses that could be harmful to their system. For example, high levels of sodium, phosphorus and protein can cause increased workload in the kidneys and heart. Kidneys are very important to the health of your dogs because they remove waste substances from the blood and maintain the normal balance of fluid and minerals within the body. Once kidney damage occurs, the consequences are usually irreversible. The heart is the most important organ in your pet's body, and factors such as age or weight may affect its function. Poor heart health can affect your dog's lifestyle and mood. Because the food your dog eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well-being, at Hill's, nutritionists and veterinarians developed clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health.

Key Benefits

  • Clinical nutrition especially formulated to support your older dog's kidneys and heart for overall health
  • Reduced phosphorus helps minimize stress on aging kidneys and reduced sodium helps maintain normal blood pressure
  • Reduced protein and targeted levels of high quality protein help decrease kidney workload
  • Optimal fat levels to reduce pancreatic workload
  • Increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids and controlled calories support kidney health

Feeding Instructions

Adjust feeding amounts as necessary to maintain optimal weight. If you are unsure, ask your veterinarian. For best results & safety practices: Gradually transition to your pets new food over a 7 day period. Exclusively feed the recommended Prescription Diet dry food, canned food & treats. Keep fresh water available at all times. Have your veterinarian monitor your pets condition.

Transition Instructions

A gradual transition to a new pet food is important to avoid digestive upset. To transition, mix your pet’s current food with the new food. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current pet food while increasing the amount of new pet food. In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend no transition or a shorter transition time.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Dog seems to find palatable, but kibble is too large I started my dog on a combination of the wet and dry G/D two weeks ago per vet directive. I was surprised that the dry kibble is so large, bigger than two other Hills Science Diet prescription formulas I have used for other dogs in the past. All my dogs have been in 10-15 lb. range, and none could eat this size food. It's barrel shaped, not flat discs, so I added hot water to soften, but still she was spitting them onto floor and eating just the wet. I thought at first she didn't like it, but after I smashed them up and put back in dish, she ate fine. Now I smash up a cup at a time each day before putting in her dish with wet. I could just go with wet food only, but my dog is not even 2 yet, so I want to give her something she can chew and bite into for her teeth, not just mush. I don't know why Hills doesn't offer it in a smaller size, but at least she will eat it and that's what matters most right now. June 3, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by good food my little guy is 11 years we were feeding him lamb & rice the vet recommended this because of his age he loves it he cleans his dish every time he get it. October 26, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great all around!!! I've ordered from Chewy.com multiple times now and have never had one complaint. Their customer service team is great and always contacts me right away if they have any questions so they don't prolong my order. I always have our order within 2 to 3 days as well. I will continue to order from Chewy.com as long as my 3 four-legged friends need me to! Thank you for being so understanding of our needs! August 2, 2016

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dogs love it I'm not eating it of course, but the three restaurant critics I live with, love it. May 26, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by food rating My one year old pup was just recently diagnosed with renal kidney dysplasia in both kidneys. :( We are not sure how long he will live for, but we were told to get him this food to try and help his kidneys in the meantime. Luckily, he has had no problem with the taste of the food or treats! Ever since we changed his diet I noticed he is pooping less (so his body is able to absorb some of the nutrients he was lacking before). Also, he now has way more energy and is acting the like normal playful puppy he should be, at his age! I just wish they sold bigger bags than 8.5lbs of dog food. I'm guessing it is probably because it is a prescription diet? September 17, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not a good fit for my dogs. Both my dogs gained weight with GD and had loose stools all the time. Switched back to WD. Disappointed to loose the benefits of GD but not sustainable as a daily diet. March 20, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by This is a prescribed food. I wish the kibble came in smaller pieces for my toy dog with dental issues. January 28, 2016
