Rated 5 out of 5 by DogMom1101 Finicky Rescue Dog Loves This
When our little rescued Shih Tzu was diagnosed with early kidney failure, we were very concerned that he would not eat the prescription food. He is very finicky, to say the least. Imagine our delight when he loved the food. We usually warm it up a bit in the microwave before feeding it to him. (The Hills website also has suggestions on how you can prepare it in other ways for a picky eater.) Before we fed him this prescription food, we fed him a premium canned dog food (not a cheap grocery store brand). The price of this food is comparable with a premium dog food. For the price, one has to keep in mind that this is a prescription dog food that is carefully made and thus the company is held to a higher standard in developing it than the companies that produce junk like Bil-Jac or Ol' Roy. We feed him the KD original and also the KD dry. We also use the Hills prescription diet treats. Sometimes he likes to have the dry KD food for a change of pace. Give this a try for your pup. And keep in mind that if this doesn't work for your dog, they also have the stew style, lamb flavor, as well as the dry. And if this line of food doesn't work, don't give up. Tell your vet and they can prescribe another type of food that your dog might like.

This dog food saved my dog's life. She was unable to eat most foods and had severe dietary issues. She has a new lease on life.

My dog suffers from kidney failure so we've tried several different dog food brands trying to manage it. This brand and flavor are by far her very favorite.

I was heart broken to find out my beloved furry child has kidney disease. Had no choice but to change her food. She won't eat the dry kd alone, but loves loves it mixed with the canned. All the food is alittle costly, so mixing it makes it go alittle longer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jordan A must have prescription food for kidney problems
My dog has stage 3 kidney disease and has to eat prescription food. When we first switched him from his regular dry kibble (different brand) to prescription food, he didn't mind. But he started disliking it very quickly. It's very bland, doesn't even look palatable, and he hates it. Because he didn't like any of the other Hill's (or other brands) prescription dry or wet food, he refused to eat any of it, got to the point where he wasn't eating anything at all, and was starving. I know he isn't suppose to eat regular dog food, but I couldn't let him starve to death, so I had no choice but to let him have some regular canned dog foods too in order to keep him alive. Right now the two he'll eat are the classic (regular) and lamb, BUT I mix approx. 70% of one of those prescription canned foods with about 30% regular canned food. Since there is are a lot of varieties & he gets bored with a food quickly, I've been using the Beneful Medley, Chopped Blends, Prepared Meals, and Incredibites, and he's eating really well now. He's not gaining any weight, but he's holding steady, and seems happy. I'm not saying you should do this for your pet; this was my decision for my pet. Talk it over with your vet first. The reason I rated it only 3 stars is because I can't understand why they can't make this food better tasting, especially because these dogs with health problems are already compromised and are probably having a hard time liking any food because they are ill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Beth Dog loves this food, convenient to serve.
My dog absolutely loves the Hill's Science Diet k/d canned food! I ordered the smaller cans in two different varieties: the chicken stew and the beef stew. They are so convenient to serve because there are no leftovers and nothing to refrigerate. I highly recommend this product.
