Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Original Canned Dog Food is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 161.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I used to be skeptical of Hill's Science Diet brand To be honest, I used to be very skeptical of Hill's Science Diet Brand, because so many people used to tell me it was just something vets endorse due to business partnership. I have two senior dogs and they always had organic high protein, no grain, premium dog food from dry, wet, rolls, etc, made in USA or Canada, throughout their lives. I spent more money on their food than my own. Then not too long ago, i found out one of my dogs was having kidney failure, I was so devastated as my vet told me the kidney can't heal itself. And her bun/creatinine levels were VERY high. By then, she had lost so much weight. Just bone and skin, peeing every 1 hour and sooo weak. But i just didn't want to give up without trying. My vet told me to give her Hill's presctiption k/d food meanwhile, along with few other supplements. But he told me not to have high hopes as she is 14 years old and he said kidney failure can't be 'healed' though i can at least prevent from it getting worse fast. It's been about over 2 months since her diet changed to the k/d. The vets are down right SHOCKED with her recent bloodwork. It shows that all levels are back to normal range. The chart still shows she has kidney disease present (mildly), but all her blood levels are normal and that's what matters most. She gained her weight and energy back. I thought she was just mellow as senior dog, but she got her young dog energy back too. I felt so sorry and guilty that she wasn't mellow due to old age but instead she was just sick and dying! *tears* She used to have crazy hyper bossy personality and that is back. :) Not only that, she always had sort of bald skin. She's short haired italian greyhound mix and always had very little fur or none in many areas, skin dryness. I've never seen her fur so 'luscious' (still practically nothing compared to normal dogs furs). Just. Mind. Blown. I don't necessarily regret giving her all those premium food in the past, because no one ever knows if she would've gotten kidney disease or not regardless. She might've gotten some other bad health conditions with 'less high protein' food and I still might've asked myself "what if i gave her only top notch food, could i have avoided this." I mean, i consider this presctiption diet still premium. Lol. But currently, all i care is that she's alive and healthy. And lol, I seriously have zero affiliation with this company but hill's prescrpt k/d seriously saved my girl's life and more. I am beyond grateful. I hope they keep up great work on creating life saving products. Oh and my dog LOVES the food. She chomps it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finicky Rescue Dog Loves This When our little rescued Shih Tzu was diagnosed with early kidney failure, we were very concerned that he would not eat the prescription food. He is very finicky, to say the least. Imagine our delight when he loved the food. We usually warm it up a bit in the microwave before feeding it to him. (The Hills website also has suggestions on how you can prepare it in other ways for a picky eater.) Before we fed him this prescription food, we fed him a premium canned dog food (not a cheap grocery store brand). The price of this food is comparable with a premium dog food. For the price, one has to keep in mind that this is a prescription dog food that is carefully made and thus the company is held to a higher standard in developing it than the companies that produce junk like Bil-Jac or Ol' Roy. We feed him the KD original and also the KD dry. We also use the Hills prescription diet treats. Sometimes he likes to have the dry KD food for a change of pace. Give this a try for your pup. And keep in mind that if this doesn't work for your dog, they also have the stew style, lamb flavor, as well as the dry. And if this line of food doesn't work, don't give up. Tell your vet and they can prescribe another type of food that your dog might like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product took 10 years off my dog's age I have a 12 yr old poodle/terrier mix who was acting older by the day. She was on this food only a week and was so much better. Within about 2 or 3 weeks she was acting like a puppy again with unlimited energy. She is still that way. The only downside is that she tells everyone who is listening that I am starving her. I'm actually feeding her a bit over the recommended amount but she can't seem to feel full.
