Feeding Instructions

Transition Instructions

Whenever there is a change of diet, it's advisable to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it into the food currently fed. We recommend mixing Newman’s Own pet foods with your current pet food over a period of approximately 2-3 weeks to guarantee that your dog or cat’s digestive system adjusts to the new food. It is important to remember that Newman’s Own pet food ingredients such as fresh natural chicken and organic brown rice, being whole foods, may be richer and may be more nutritionally concentrated than your current food. We always recommend that you contact your veterinarian if your animal has persistent digestive upsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your pet products thoroughly tested?

Yes. All of our pet products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality control and samples are obtained during each production run for analysis and retention for additional evaluation.

Is there any animal testing involved?

No. The only analytical testing done is in a laboratory where animals are NOT allowed. We do "taste testing" with animals awaiting adoption in a local humane society shelter.

I would like to begin feeding Newman’s Own pet food to my dog and cat. I have read that if this is done too fast that intestinal upsets may result. What are your recommendations?

Whenever there is a change of diet, it's advisable to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it into the food currently fed. What are the benefits of feeding organic dog and cat foods?

Feeding organic foods eliminates the buildup of residues of chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides which have been clinically proven to have adverse health effects on dogs, cats and in fact all animals including humans.

Can I mix Newman's Own canned foods with dry foods?

Yes. Canned foods are a great way to add a little variety and "extra" taste to dry foods.

Why do the dry formulas contain soy?

Soy is an excellent low-fat source of bio-available protein that contains antioxidant compounds and amino acids that boost the immune system and decrease levels of LDL cholesterol. We use organic soybean meal in all our dry food formulas. Our team of veterinarians, including a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, felt that organic soybean meal provided an excellent hypoallergenic and concentrated source of many of the essential micro and macro nutrients that animals can benefit from.

What is carrageenan?

Carrageenan is a seaweed extract common in the Atlantic Ocean near Britain, Continental Europe and North America and used as a thickening agent in place of animal-based products like gelatin, which is extracted from animal bones. Seaweed is boiled to extract the carrageenan, and in that sense, carrageenan is completely "natural" and not much different from tomato in its creation. Note: Chemically treated, degraded carrageenan however, is a known cancer causing agent and is not used or permitted in food production.

What Is Taurine and why is it important for my cats?

Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats that is found in meat protein. It is a dietary requirement for a good eyesight, heart function, digestion (production of bile salts) and proper reproduction. Taurine is essential in cats because it is required by the heart and eyes however it is neither manufactured nor available in the body. Therefore, cats need meat to fulfill this requirement (obligate carnivores), as Taurine is only found in animal proteins such as chicken.

Why does the Advanced Formula, which is recommended for older dogs, have higher protein levels than the Adult Formula?

The advanced is higher in protein than the adult (24 vs. 21%) and is formulated for puppies, active dogs and seniors on the premise that the first two groups require higher levels of protein due to increased growth and energy needs and the later because of the decreased intestinal absorption associated with aging.

  • Organic and great quality!

Most canned foods smell awful! This food smells like real beef! My dog dances when she smells Newman's, I've tested with another brand, no dance! The nose knows quality!

  • Finicky Puppy LOVES it!

    By on

We have a rescue Lab/King Shepherd mix puppy who is about 9 weeks old and was severely underweight when we adopted him. I just felt like he was not eating enough and was trying different wet foods and dry foods to see if there was anything that would perk him up during meal time and get him excited to be eating. He LOVES this wet food! He doesn't like the other varieties of the NO wet food but this one, for some reason, he cannot get enough of! I am SO happy to have found something that will get him to eat!!!!! Thanks!

My dog is allergic to chicken, and it's extremely difficult to find dog food without some kind of chicken or chicken by product in it. My dog is picky as well. She loves this food!! She eats it every time, with enthusiasm. Great product and great price at Chewy.com, fast delivery too!

  • Dog voted this the best canned food ever!

    By on

I have tried my dog of most premium canned dog foods to mix with his kibble, and he turns his nose up at most, and so I add cooked meat to the top to coax him to eat. This is the first canned dog food in his 8 years of life that he gobbles right up, and it actually smells just fine in the can, another first. Definitely worth the price, many times over!

  • My 2 dogs love this food. My only complaint is that it cost too much.

    By on

I wish it was cheaper because I can't afford to feed two dogs this food. We are retired and live on a fixed income.

  • 20% of can is solid fat

    By on

Sorry, Newman... Every can in the case has a large lining of solid white hard fat that I need to peel away from the food before serving my dog. It's really gross, terribly inconvenient and wasteful. After separating the non edible portion, I'm literally throwing away at least 20% of each can. Only reason for 2 stars is that my dog does eat the part that I serve him. But I won't be repurchasing this.
