Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosequin® for Dogs?

Cosequin is a patented, scientifically researched nutritional supplement dispensed by thousands of veterinarians to help dogs maintain healthy joints. As dogs age, it is common for their joints to become less flexible which impacts their mobility and quality of life. You may have noticed that your dog has difficulty walking up stairs or jumping on the bed. While he used to be eager to play, now he is content to rest. Even at younger ages some dogs are subject to joint health concerns which affect flexibility and mobility. Cosequin contains TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49®* glucosamine and manganese ascorbate. These ingredients have been scientifically formulated to support and maintain the health of your dog's joints. Published studies have shown that the specific combination of ingredients in Cosequin works together to maintain the structure of the cartilage in your dog's joints while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage. It is very important to note that the published studies on Cosequin do not apply to other brands.

When is the use of Cosequin® recommended?

Early action is always the best advice. Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. With regular check - ups your veterinarian can talk with you about your dog’s aging process. Your veterinarian may discuss weight control, selective use of medications, exercise and the administration of Cosequin. It is important to have your dog examined by your veterinarian if you notice the dog having difficulties climbing stairs, jumping into the car, going for walks or even getting up. Your veterinarian can advise you if Cosequin can help. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Cosequin as a protective measure. This can be important for maintaining an active life for many dogs, especially large breeds and working dogs of all sizes. Cosequin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery.

My pet just started taking Cosequin®. What should I notice?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether he seems more comfortable performing everyday activities such as climbing up stairs, going for walks, or even getting up. Most people will observe gradual changes in their dog’s comfort level. In a published survey of over 3,000 veterinarians, over 80% of dogs administered Cosequin improved significantly in their mobility, level of comfort, and attitude. Overall, the veterinarians rated Cosequin as good to excellent.

How long does it take Cosequin® to work?

Since Cosequin is a supplement and provides nutrients to maintain your dog’s joint health, it works more gradually than drugs. Improvement on Cosequin can range from gradual to dramatic. Following the administration schedule on the label for your dog’s weight, we recommend an initial administration period of 4 - 6 weeks. Some dogs may show a response in a shorter period of time.

Should I give Cosequin® to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Are there any side effects?

A safety study in dogs demonstrated no adverse effects of Cosequin administration on blood work parameters, including complete blood count, biochemical, and clotting values. Some dogs may experience a mild gastrointestinal upset such as that which occurs when switching foods. If this is the case, you can try offering Cosequin with a meal.

Should I exercise my dog while he is on Cosequin®?

Exercise is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control for the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures break down at a rapid rate. Consult with your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

This supplement is great for large breed dogs. I've had German Sheppards my whole life. Though GS is a great breed, they do need extra care when they reach 7-8 years old, some earlier. GS can develop hip and joint problems if not cared for properly. This is one of the better supplement I have found. They are chewable with a flavor which my dogs have always enjoyed. Always a plus, buying them from Chewy.com, they're a little less expensive than where I was purchasing them before.

  • Great for my 2 older dogs

I noticed that my 9 year old Blue Heeler, Kylie, was having trouble getting up the stairs after a good game of fetch. I checked with my Vet and she recommended starting her on Cosequin. We decided to purchase from Chewy because of the great prices, quick shipping, & awesome customer service. I have really noticed a difference in her, she has been getting around much better! Plus she thinks it is a treat so she loves it. I also give it to my 8 year old Weimaraner.

I don't buy a bunch of health stuff, for myself or my dog(s) but two years ago I bought a 'retired' female standard poodle for my male. She's a sweetheart, but showed signs of all those births (her last litter at 8 years old was nine puppies and she was showing it in her walk. I immediately bought runners for my vinyl floors, already had replaced 13 stairs to the backyard with a ramp, and I thought we'd be fine, but gradually her legs got worse and her hind legs would splay outward. With many doubts, I purchased Cosequin and suddenly my 'old girl' was giving a little bounce and barking for me to come down and play, she had her 'poodle prance' back in her step. I've actually started taking Osteo Biflex with hopes the prance will be back in my 65+ step. She still slips on any non-covered flooring, but she clearly is much more comfortable taking the Cosequin. I was terrified that she would not be with me much longer, but now I'm hopeful that she could last as long as I do. … more

We give our older German Shepherd, Misty, a small pill every day for her arthritis. I had been using a human glucosamine peanut butter chew from a local nutrition store. I'd unwrap the chew and put the pill in the chew. Misty's teeth are getting bad and the chew is like chewing a caramel. Very chewy. We liked the chews because it had a good dose of glucosamine in it. After years, the chews are no longer available and are getting harder for Misty to chew. I am so glad I chose these Cosequin treats as a replacement. They are small and soft enough to easily push the small pill in to. Misty loves them, and they have a nice big dose of glucosamine for that added joint help. • My Picky Dog Likes It!

    By on

I had tried the same type of Cosequin in the chewable tablet form. My oldest dog (12 years old) liked it and ate it with no problem. My middle dog (11 years old) spit it out. Wrapped it in cheese, she ate the cheese and spit out the tablet. Covered it in peanut butter, she ate the peanut butter and spit out the tablet. Picky Tessa is eating the Soft Chews! Although she has not been on Cosequin long enough to see a marked difference in her hips, at least she is eating them, so hopefully they will provide more flexibility in her legs and hips.

These little bites are perfect for my dog. She has major hip issues and since taking this, she is rising better and has some pep in her step and it hasn't even taken the whole bag to see results.I plan to continue this and add turmeric to boost her along her way. She is on the maintenance dose and it is a good price.

  • My dog loves these!!

I have a Sheltie who at the age of 5 started showing signs of hip issues. His hip would occasionally just give out on him. I started giving him hard vitamin tablets but to get him to eat them I had to wrap it in turkey. Given he has stomach issues this was at times counterproductive. I wanted to find something that he would view as a treat and still give him the vitamins he needs. He loves these!!! No turkey needed. No tummy issues either!! No issues with his hip giving out and he actually runs even more now. Chewy has the best prices, quality and customer service over any local store.

I had seen alot of commercials for this yet never really paid much attention to it. I have a 12 year old paralyzed dog who depends solely on her front legs. I noticed she was having a hard time getting around,so I tried this. It is working great. I wish I had started her on it years ago.

My dog is 11 1/2 years old, so I thought it would be a good idea to start giving him this supplement. He thinks it's a treat and gets excited about it. The price is very reasonable because after 4 weeks, you only need to use it every other day.
