Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cosequin® for Dogs?

Cosequin is a patented, scientifically researched nutritional supplement dispensed by thousands of veterinarians to help dogs maintain healthy joints. As dogs age, it is common for their joints to become less flexible which impacts their mobility and quality of life. You may have noticed that your dog has difficulty walking up stairs or jumping on the bed. While he used to be eager to play, now he is content to rest. Even at younger ages some dogs are subject to joint health concerns which affect flexibility and mobility. Cosequin contains TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate, FCHG49®* glucosamine and manganese ascorbate. These ingredients have been scientifically formulated to support and maintain the health of your dog's joints. Published studies have shown that the specific combination of ingredients in Cosequin works together to maintain the structure of the cartilage in your dog's joints while inhibiting the enzymes that break down cartilage. It is very important to note that the published studies on Cosequin do not apply to other brands.

When is the use of Cosequin® recommended?

Early action is always the best advice. Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. With regular check-ups your veterinarian can talk with you about your dog’s aging process. Your veterinarian may discuss weight control, selective use of medications, exercise and the administration of Cosequin. It is important to have your dog examined by your veterinarian if you notice the dog having difficulties climbing stairs, jumping into the car, going for walks or even getting up. Your veterinarian can advise you if Cosequin can help. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Cosequin as a protective measure. This can be important for maintaining an active life for many dogs, especially large breeds and working dogs of all sizes. Cosequin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery.

My pet just started taking Cosequin®. What should I notice?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether he seems more comfortable performing everyday activities such as climbing up stairs, going for walks, or even getting up. Most people will observe gradual changes in their dog’s comfort level. In a published survey of over 3,000 veterinarians, over 80% of dogs administered Cosequin improved significantly in their mobility, level of comfort, and attitude. Overall, the veterinarians rated Cosequin as good to excellent.

How long does it take Cosequin® to work?

Since Cosequin is a supplement and provides nutrients to maintain your dog’s joint health, it works more gradually than drugs. Improvement on Cosequin can range from gradual to dramatic. Following the administration schedule on the label for your dog’s weight, we recommend an initial administration period of four to six weeks. Some dogs may show a response in a shorter period of time.

Should I give Cosequin® to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average "weekend warrior". In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Are there any side effects?

A safety study in dogs demonstrated no adverse effects of Cosequin administration on blood work parameters, including complete blood count, biochemical, and clotting values. Some dogs may experience a mild gastrointestinal upset such as that which occurs when switching foods. If this is the case, you can try offering Cosequin with a meal.

Should I exercise my dog while he is on Cosequin®?

Exercise is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control for the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures break down at a rapid rate. Consult with your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

  • Have tried others...

    By on

I wasted a lot of money trying other, mostly less expensive, joint supplements. These are simply the best on the market, in my opinion, and I will continue to buy only Cosequin from now on. My dog absolutely loves them. She gets two chews after dinner, and if she has left the room I yell "Cosequin" and she comes running back to get her meds. Those times I did switch to an inferior product, the change was noticeable. That convinced me. I buy the bigger bag when I can, and that saves me more money. Very good product.

  • Increased mobility

    By on

Busta aka Chubby is moving much easier than he was without the cosequin. He is almost 14 and needs to get on and off a boat all the time.He was to the point where he could not get on or off without help and now he is much better. He is still old and slow but we certainly saw an improvement after taking the cosequin.

  • Helped my dog with luxating patella

    By on

My dog is a 9lb miniature poodle with luxating patella and weak hind legs. Four months ago, he was running in the park and shrieked in pain, probably because his knee cap fell out. We've been giving him this chew every other day for the past four months, and he has never shown any more signs of pain. We'll keep feeding this chew.

  • Very Bad smell

    By on

The smell is overwhelming but the dogs love them! I will continue to buy them! I was using the other cosequin white round chewables before I just switched to these and I haven't noticed a huge difference in my dogs mobility, yet! I like to give things a good month of continued use. I'm not there yet.

  • Great product!

    By on

Before Cosequin I was very concerned that my dog was in pain. It was a struggle for her to stand after a small injury to her rear leg. Since starting these tablets, I am seeing a huge difference in my dogs mobility. Like she was a pup again! I will definitely continue with this product.

  • Works great!

    By on

My 13 y/o dog has a very dry and crusty nose. It's only been about 2 weeks since she's been taking this supplement, and her nose is looking so much better. Can't say much about the difference it has made in her joints yet but I would recommend this to promote healthy skin.

  • My dog loves them

    By on

I got these because my dog is getting a bit older and he has also had surgery to repair a torn ACL. It was recommended to start him on a supplement to help his joints stay healthy. He thinks they are a treat. It's the first thing he eats in his food bowl

  • Keep them moving

    By on

The dogs love this product. They eat them as if they were treats. We give then to all the dogs. It helps the older dogs move like they are younger and we expect it will help the younger dogs maintain themselves as they age.

  • Best Supplement for Joints

    By on

My 12 year old Yorkie has had chronic issues with subluxing patellas and ACL issues most of his life. Although standard medical treatment has offered periodic relief, I have found that a daily maintenance dose of Cosequin has really helped support his joints and helped his discomfort from the daily pressure he has just trying to walk...he loves the taste and thinks it is a treat!
