Orijen Dog Food

Biologically Appropriate Commitment

Dogs and cats are built like their ancestors, that's why all of Orijen's recipes are based on five Biologically Appropriate principals:

  • Rich and Varied in Fresh Whole Meats In nature, dogs benefit from a diversity of prey, so Orijen features meats, organs and cartilage from an assortment of cage-free poultry, free-range red meats and wild-caught fish.
  • Meat and Protein Rich Your dog is a carnivore, adapted for a diet rich in meat and protein. Orijen is loaded with 75-90% meat -- up to three times as much meat as conventional dog foods.
  • Carbohydrates Limited A dog's natural diet contains few, if any, carbohydrates. That's why Orijen replaces fast carbohydrates (such as potatoes and rice) with low-glycemic and regionally-sourced fruits and vegetables.
  • Fresh Fruits, Vegetables and Berries In place of cereal grains that spike blood sugars (such as rice and corn), Orijen features fresh orchard-grown fruits and vegetables that supply fiber and antioxidants in a natural form.
  • Botanicals Strengthen the Body and Spirit Providing an element of your dog's diet that he naturally craves, botanicals boost metabolism, strengthen organs and help cleanse the body of toxins.

Whole Prey Foods

In the wild, dogs consume the whole animal to meet their full dietary needs, so Orijen recipes incorporate three Whole Prey elements in specific ratios.

Meat | 70-85%

High meat inclusions means all amino acids are provided in natural form, without any synthetic supplements.

Edible Bone | 5-10%

5 to 10% bone, marrow and cartilage provide calcium, phosphorus, glucosamine and chondroitin in a natural source, without any artificial additives.

Organ Meat | 10-15%

10 to 15% fresh liver and tripe are a richly nourishing source of vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc and vitamins A, B and D.

Fresh, Whole Food Ingredients

  • Licorice Root Licorice Root Supplies soluble fiber, soothes and nourishes the digestive tract, cleanses the colon and reduces insulin levels.
  • Cranberries and Blueberries Cranberries and Blueberries Rich in antioxidants, supports immunity and urinary health.
  • Angelica Root and Fenugreek Angelica Root and Fenugreek Supports digestion and provides protective antioxidants that defend the kidney against chronic damage.
  • Butternut Squash Butternut Squash Loaded with healthy fiber and a natural source of vitamins including B6 for immune support.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 531 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great food, big difference in the itch factor! My puppy has a sensitivity to chicken, as I discovered with the intense itchiness she had after eating anything containing chicken through a process of elimination. Since she is old enough to start on adult food, I looked into Orijen's adult food offerings. Thankfully they offer 2 options that do not contain chicken. I ordered a bag of the fish and a bag of the regional red. I haven't tried the regional red, but the fish was a big hit with my puppy. She refused to eat her prescription kibble as I started transitioning her to the adult food (she ate the Orijen and spit out the prescription food), but she had zero GI issues, so I transitioned her in less than a week's time. The food does have a distinct smell which is a bit off-putting to me, however my puppy loves it and it doesn't linger too long. I've now transitioned her to a 50-50 mixture with fresh food and she inhales it in 5 minutes or less. She's no longer itchy and her coat is super soft, it's made a noticeable difference, thanks Orijen! July 23, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best food for my Newf! This dog food is the highest quality kibble available! After just the first bowl I was convinced! The kibble is very rich, contains high quality sources of fish. No by-products or fillers. I bought this food for my dog who is allergic to all poultry. I set this food out in one bowl & put Acana in another (Acana is made by the same co & is a good food too) He immediately went for the Orijen! He is a very picky eater & he gobbled this right up! Also I may point out that he eats WAY less on this than on cheaper kibble. Cheaper kibble he would eat about 6-8cups/day on Orijen he only eats about 3.5cups/day & is NOT hungry! And he has stopped begging for people food. Consider this when contemplating the cost. I alternate depending upon my budget bc this food is expensive. Acana is good as well as Castor & Pollux, both less expensive alternatives. But you get what you pay for with this--excellent product! August 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Real Food I can pronounce all the ingredients. I switched to this food because my dogs would just sniff there other high quality food and then look at me as if to say" we have to eat this" then they both got sick. No more, since feeding six fishes they eat with gusto. Since I feed less their poop piles are much smaller. No more vomiting or loose stools. August 25, 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by No Longer a Canadian Product Very concerned to hear that Orijen is changing this product. Not only will it be made in the US with different suppliers of the ingredients, additionally the bag will go from 28lbs to 25lbs. Reading the reviews from other people on the other flavors already being made and manufactured in the US there is a quality difference (inferior ingredients) and possible change in the formulas itself. I'm concerned when the change occurs for the 6 Fish (US manufactured still not available), the price point won't drop even with the 3lb difference. I'm concerned that we will have to switch our dog to a different brand at this point. This is why I'm only giving the product a three star- it seems another company is looking to cut corners and expect its customers not to notice. July 30, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by One of the best no grain, high protein foods This food is a winner for quality, grain free, feeding for active and aging dogs who have high protein needs for muscular, lean bodies. Veggie component in the food menu. All of my PWDs love it. Digestion of the food is magnificent. My kids eat the fish formula. No added fillers. August 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Orijen's foods are excellent! I've been feeding Orijen since my golden was a pup and was having problems with other grain free foods. He is 4 now and continues to do well on all of their foods. August 26, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good food It seems to be a good food, my puppy likes it. I wish they had wet food so I could rotate and not to give same food every time. Puppies like variety of food. August 26, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dog loves it My dog absolutely loves this food. And her digestion is so much better. August 25, 2016
