I bought 40 gal for my two dogs. The tank gets so heavy, even half full AND you have to flip it to fit in the base. I wish there was a handle on the top to carry or a lid to open when add more water. Also, the filter is located inside of lid so it is sitting IN the water. So what happens is that the filter is sitting in the same, dirty water the whole time. To me, it makes no different between stainless steel bowls and this because I have to constantly change the dirty water in the base. More work.

  • Bulky and extremely heavy

This waterer was purchased to keep four dogs hydrated without having to refill a bowl multiple times or worse, kick the bowl and spill causing guests to fall. It serves that purpose. The nightmare kicks in at refill time. There is no easy way to refill like there is with the feeder. Weighing just under 40 pounds, the kids can no longer water the dogs. I have to carry it in from outside (because it's too big to fit under any faucet) and flip it upside down into the dish. If the filter (which I believe is unnecessary) is removed, water splashes out all over the floor. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased a smaller one even though I would have to water them more often. I will likely cut a hole in the bottom of the jug and fill with a small garden hose or pitcher without ever moving it from its dish. To help reduce the frequency of refills, I have a large bucket of water outside as well so they only drink from this one when they come in for rest. … more

  • Easy to use water bowl

    By on

I absolutely love this water container. It was easy to assemble, easy to clean, and easy to refill. The top portion of the container screws into the bottom portion, making it easy for almost anyone to refill it on their own. Some similar containers are difficult to refill without making a mess, but not this one. I was skeptical when I first refilled it and was pleasantly surprised when it didn't leak at all. Very satisfied with my purchase! Oh, and most importantly, it lasts about a week with three small dogs. I like to clean it at least weekly anyway, so that works perfectly for me.

  • Nice and simple, does the job

    By on

When my old self watering bowl finally went kaput after like 20 years, I had to find a replacement. I have a large pet family with 3 dogs and 4 cats so I needed a large bowl with a large water source. This fits the bill, and is simple, uncomplicated, and does a nice job. You can clean the bowl when you refill the water, so if you only have one pet, you may want a smaller one. If I was talking to the manufacturer, I would say to make some niches or a handle or something to make the water bottle easier to hold. It is not that difficult to hold now, but could be a bit easier.

The 4 gallon Petmate Waterer is just ridiculous! ... In a good way! We have a number of animals that share our household. With two medium/large dogs and five cats, we go through a decent amount of water within a day. Now, being that food and water are necessities in life, it certainly was never a bother to make sure that they always had fresh water available to them throughout the day - but, man... we were filling our two large sized bowls at least three or four times throughout the day. • 5 dog night

This 5 gallon waterer is made well, only wish it was easier to put on the bowl, I think it needs a handle on the lid section. Other than that it works great, we use to fill our 2 liter tank up 2 times a day bit now it last 5 or 6 days and we have 5 large dogs.

  • Great water bowl!

    By on

This holds plenty of water for my big german shepherd! She drinks a lot of water and makes a mess. With the big base it helps keep the mess contained and she can enjoy drinking without making the area a big puddle of water. It came quickly and was already assembled. Would definitely get it again if needed!

  • Great for my big dog

    By on

I have had this water bowl for about a month now. It's been great I only have to fill it once a week for my dog. ( he's BIG) my only issue is he's also a bit messy so the bowl part gets gross before the top jug needs refilling so that's a little harder but I love it having to fill his bowl multiple times a day!

  • My Lab Loves this!

    By on

My 16 month old Lab is full of energy and always needs a good drink. He absolutely loves this. Especially when I first fill it he races to get the water as it comes out. I would probably get a but smaller one next time the 2.5 is pretty large but that's just my preference. Highly recommended it because our water smells like chlorine and I feel terrible he has been drinking it all along. I love the thought that his drinking water is ad clean as ours and it's very cost effective. Thanks again Chewy!

  • Awesome product !!

I've recently upgraded to this in the 2 or 2.5 gallon capacity for my Siberian's. They love drinking fresh water from it and seems to last a few days between refills. It's even easy to clean inside the bottle with large man hands. I originally purchased this item in the 1 gallon size about a year ago. It's been great and worked very well without any issues. Just needed refilling daily. We now use the smaller one when enjoying the outdoors!
