We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. A good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, adult dog fed once daily.

Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily.

Transition Instructions

Although you'll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7 - 10 days to ease the transition from your dog’s current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you're feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you ensure the quality of your dog and cat food?

We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in our pet foods. These standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry. You can feed our food with confidence, knowing the Purina commitment to quality provides the best possible nutrition for your pet.

Do you test your dog and cat food for aflatoxins?

Yes. We have a meticulous quality assurance program for every incoming load of dog and cat food ingredients. We have ingredient specialists at each of our North American Purina pet food manufacturing facilities who are trained to sample and analyze incoming grain. Our grain testing program helps ensure only high-quality grains are used in our products. This testing is part of our comprehensive food safety and HACCP programs

We maintain a strict code of standards for buying, storing and processing ingredients used in Purina pet foods, including grains. Every supplier of ingredients for Purina pet food must meet stringent standards for ingredient specification, product safety, sanitation and good manufacturing practices. Our quality assurance standards are among the strictest in the pet food industry.

Where is your dog and cat food manufactured?

99% of Purina pet food products sold in the U.S. are manufactured in our own facilities in the U.S.

Why does your dog and cat food contain colors?

Although dogs and cats are unable to distinguish color, we know that most pet owners consider the product’s appearance when purchasing food for their pet. Artificial coloring is added to maintain a more desirable and consistent appearance. All colorings used in our pet foods are approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Where are your ingredients sourced from? Are they sourced from China?

The vast majority of ingredients used in Purina brand products are sourced from the United States. As with other food companies, we do source a limited amount of ingredients from China. These ingredients, which are primarily essential nutrients, such as taurine and B vitamins, are not commonly available in the USA or other countries in the quantities we need.

Why use corn in dog and cat food? Is corn a filler?

“Filler” may be defined as feed ingredients for pet food with little or no nutritional value. Every ingredient in our formulas has a valuable function and plays a part in providing an excellent source of nutrition to your pet. When properly cooked, corn provides a highly digestible source of carbohydrate, essential fatty acids and protein, and thus, is not considered filler. Corn also has among the highest level of natural antioxidants of any grains. Purina only uses the same grades of corn traditionally used in human food products.

Does your dog and cat food contain GMO grains?

It is likely that our pet food contains GMO grains because genetically modified grain and grain products constitute a significant portion of the supply of grain available throughout the U.S. for both human and pet foods. U.S. grain handling and distribution practices result in a co-mingling of supply, which results in a loss of identity preservation.

The FDA recognizes the safety and equivalence of products derived from U.S.-approved varieties of genetically modified grain, so there is no reason to exclude it from the general supply. In addition, the FDA does not require products containing GMO grains to bear additional labeling.

Why do you use by-products in dog and cat food?

By-products are defined as the co-product of a primary product and are usually portions of the animal not always consumed by people in the U.S. By-products are an excellent source of protein and other nutrients. By-products in pet foods that meet Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines come from clean animal parts other than meat, such as the liver, kidney and other organs. Purina purchases all by-products from USDA-inspected plants. They must meet stringent criteria for nutrient content, production and quality assurance.

What is animal digest?

Animal digest is often considered a substandard pet food ingredient. In some cases, this is because the word "digest" is mistakenly thought to describe the contents of the digestive tract. The word "digest" in "animal digest" refers to the digestive process used in production, not the ingredients.

The process starts with animal protein such as muscle and soft tissue supplied by USDA-inspected facilities.

These ingredients are processed in order to break them down, similar to the process of digestion in the body. The resulting digest is a liquid, but can also be made into a paste or powder.

Animal digest is a high-quality ingredient that provides an excellent source of protein and enhances the palatability of Dog & Cat foods.

Why don’t you utilize a natural source of Vitamin K instead of menadione?

The basic story about the dangers of Menadione has emerged at various times during the past decades as something of an urban legend in the pet food industry and are not research-based. In fact, numerous research studies and nutritional textbooks have identified Menadione as a safe and effective means of providing the important nutrient Vitamin K to Dogs & Cats. Menadione has been commonly used in pet foods for approximately 25 years with no documented negative health effects. Menadione is a stable source of the essential nutrient vitamin K. Vitamin K provides the following nutritional benefits: it is required for the synthesis of a number of body proteins, most notably the proteins responsible for normal blood clotting.

How do I know how to feed my dog or cat? How do I know if my dog/cat is overweight?

Feeding your pet is one of the most important ways you can care for him. Once you have chosen the right food for your pet, you can develop a plan for portioning and scheduling. For more information, check your product package for specific feeding amounts.

All of our Dog & Cat foods come with feeding instructions to help you properly feed your pet depending on his size, but certain types of pets may require specialized foods to help them maintain an ideal body condition.

What is a complete and balanced nutrition in dog or cat food?

Pet food makes up the entirety of a pet’s diet, so it needs to deliver all of the nutrients they need. That’s why pet foods so often use the phrase “complete and balanced.” Every pet food needs to meet federal (FDA) and state regulatory standards before it gets near your dog’s or cat’s bowl.

I have never been impressed with Purina foods from a nutritional standpoint, but after trying about fifteen different foods and still having a miserable, itchy, raw and exhausted dog I had to try it. All her siblings apparently eat ProPlan (I discovered after I desperately sought their advice on her allergies) and none of the premium brands of dog food I knew were top notch and designed as limited ingredient were not doing the trick. Weekly medicated baths, countless topicals and anti itch wipes and allergy medicine to ease her horrible discomfort barely helped. She needed steroids for two weeks to get the sores on her stomach to heal; she'd worn herself raw. I finally tried this food after the other sensitive skin ones failed and within three weeks there was a difference. Less inflamed, less irritable. Six weeks, no sores and no more bright red patches of skin. My white dog finally doesn't look pink! We are on our third bag and she is healthier than ever before. I am sworn on this now! My other dog may have done great on the other foods but he is even showing more energy and alertness nowadays. Good vibes all around! … more

  • Dr. recommended as low sodium option

    By on

My doberman loves this dog food. She has a serious, chronic heart condition and needs low sodium food. I thought this might taste a bit weird because it's low sodium and designed for sensitive skin and stomachs. But it smells good (as far as dog food usually goes); slightly fishy and feels a bit oily which is good, in my opinion. I integrated this new food with the old and the switch went well... less than a week) and my dog gobbles this up with the home cooked concoction I usually add to the dry stuff. I'm very happy with it. This particular Pro Plan food (sensitive skin and stomach) was on a list of low sodium foods recommended by my dog's cardiologist. • So far so good!

I have 3 large dogs. One of them is severely epileptic & also has food sensitivities. It took me a long time to finally find a food that worked well with him. Well, that food is no longer manufactured so back to the drawing board. His vet gave me a list of food to try. I tried one and his skin/coat became flaky & he developed a double ear infection. So that food was a no go. I had to try another food on the list. I decided to try the Purina Pro Plan Focus as the reviews seemed good & the price was very reasonable (most of the food on the list is super expensive & for such a small bag). I have another dog that has a sensitive stomach so I decided to put him on this food as well. They are both scarfing it down! I hope this works out for him because it's appears to be a good quality food for reasonable price & you get a decent sized bag. These other companies that are charging close to $100 for a 20 lb bag - are you kidding me? Who can afford that? Not me! I want the best for my dogs but being on a budget you have to make smart decisions. So far, this is a winner! … more

  • Testing this Product

I was a bit frustrated when I switched to this brand because my order was canceled at the last minute on the other brand I was using. As you can imagine my dogs ran out of food and I had to start them on the new brand without mixing the two (never good). One of the bags in the box was open so the food spilled all over my floor :(....not happy! I was also disappointed with the size of the food. It is suppose to be for large dogs and this food is tiny. I bought this brand because my hound is always scratching and shaking his ears. I am hoping this helps as I believe he has skins allergies. I will try for a couple months!

  • It helped our dogs!

This food is a lifesaver ( almost literally) for all three of our dogs, of all different ages. We had them on another brand that was listed as "All Life Stages" and after several months noticed all of them were losing significant weight even though I was feeding them all the recommended amounts if not a bit more. They were also constantly scratching to the point they all had hot spots even though they are on flea and tick preventive every month. We decided to try this food and all 3 of them love it and after only a month they are all gaining their lost weight back and are no longer scratching themselves raw. Great food for sensitive fur babies!

  • Will keep getting this

I raise maltese and it's hard to find a food that all 12 like. But they all seem to like this. When I was transitioning to this food, with half of their old food and half of the this new food mixed, they would pick out this new food to eat and leave their old food so I knew they liked it. I like that the ingredients are much healthier and better than what was in their old food, I will definitely continue to have this food shipped to us. I love how quick and easy it is to purchase from Chewy and it comes right to my front door. And I also really love the auto ship every six weeks, so I'll never forget to reorder.

Was looking for a different food for my Shelties and Mini Dachshunds that would be good on their tummy and good for their coat as well...I chose this food.and so far although its only been 10 days or so, am happy with it, my dogs like it, and also have good firm stools. I like that it has no wheat, soy, corn, or flax or peas too. I have heard flax and peas can be linked to fertility issues which I do not need for sure. I am always amazed at how fast my order comes to me..I love that too! If I have any issues at all Chewy has always taken care of them for me.

This dog food is a life saver. My dog skin and stomach are so sensitive. Just one wrong ingredient and she is itching like crazy and constantly scratching herself or it's giving her a tummy ache and she's constantly puking. This dog food has helped so much! She doesn't scratch anymore and I she hasn't thrown up not the first time. I will definitely continue to get my dog this food. And the auto shop feature is amazing, the only place that sells this food in my town sells it for $50 so I'm saving $10. Try it, you won't regret it!
