This Royal Canin formula is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherds over 15 months. The German Shepherd has a notably fragile digestive system, which often leads to soft stools, frequent digestive upset and sometimes bloating. Unlike other breeds, the German Shepherd’s skin is extremely alkaline and very sensitive. That's why it's important to choose a diet tailor-made for their specific needs.

Transition Instructions

We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Royal Canin diets preserved?

All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process.

Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?

We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.

Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?

Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?

Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients.

How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?

Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.

  • We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.
  • We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.
  • We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.
  • We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.

How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?

Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.

If your pet is experiencing health issues, please refer to your veterinarian for more information. Your veterinarian will consider multiple factors when recommending an appropriate diet.

Why Pure Breed Dogs Need Tailored Nutrition

From their personalities to their distinctive physiologies, pure breed dogs have unique characteristics that make them sought-after and beloved companions. When choosing a formula, it's important to keep in mind the unique characteristics of your breed including:

Face and Jaw: All dogs fall into two basic jaw types: Brachycephalic or mesocephalic. Breeds with short, broad muzzles (like Bulldogs) are examples of a brachycephalic jaw. Breeds with a longer muzzle (like Labrador Retrievers) are examples of mesocephalic breeds. The jaw type, and even biting patterns can affect how a breed picks up kibble.

Skin Types: The skin's most important function is to serve as a barrier of protection-but not all breeds have the same skin type. From wrinkled and folded (which traps heat and moisture) to sensitive or water resistant, precise levels of key nutrients help to support a breed's unique skin health needs.

Distinctive Coats: There's more to a coat than meets the eye. From the color and texture to undercoats, each pure breed dog has a unique coat with unique needs.

Breed Specific Formulas

Every dog is unique. From the small, flat-faced Pug to the obesity-prone Labrador Retriever, Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition is tailor-made to address the unique needs of pure breed dogs. These breed specific formulas benefit from the latest Royal Canin research on the selection of the best protein sources, unique nutrients and tailor-made kibbles.

Formulated for German Shepherds

Royal Canin's German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherds over 15 months.

Digestive performance: This formula addresses sensitive digestion common in German Shepherds with highly digestible L.I.P. proteins and a selection of specific fibers. These limit intestinal fermentation and help maintain a balanced intestinal flora.

Healthy skin & coat: Appropriate food plays an important part in maintaining the quality of the skin and coat. German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food helps support the skin's role as a barrier with an exclusive complex of nutrients, and helps maintain skin and coat health with EPA and DHA.

Bone & joint support: German Shepherds tend to have a lively temperament that can lead to hard-working joints. This formula helps support healthy bones and joints and maintain an ideal weight.

Exclusive Kibble

German Shepherds have a long, strong muzzle with equally strong teeth. The size, shape and texture of the kibble in German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food is exclusively designed for easy pick up while also encouraging dogs to chew.

Why Royal Canin?

Over time, Royal Canin has accumulated vast knowledge about cats and dogs that only extensive research, scientific study and tireless talks with pet professionals, veterinarians and owners can provide. That knowledge led them to develop precise nutrition for cats and dogs. Each Royal Canin formula is tailored to pets' size, age, lifestyle and breed and contains more than 50 perfectly balanced nutrients for the most effective diet possible.

Their focus on science puts pets at the heart of the formulation process, choosing only ingredients that optimize the food's nutritional content. Royal Canin also continues to invest heavily in new technology to ensure their quality and food safety systems remain state-of-the-art, so pets can continue to benefit from the latest in food health and nutrition.

  • Great food 4 german shepherd

    By on

Have had our rescued german shephard on RC for 8 years. He is picky, only eats it with a raw egg on top.. 1 30# bag lasts me about 40-50 days & my boy is a lean 108#'s. He is fed 1 bowl full 1X a day. I have the 12" elevated feeding/water bowl so he doesn't bend far to eat. I have a big ice scoop from a closed restaurant that i use for his food. He gets 1 scoop a day. Under the 6c a day bag says but he has had hip issues since we rescued him. He is not the typical high energy german shepherd because he has learned, if he is, he is in pain afterwards. He gets about 4c and has maintained his wt the entire 8 yrs

  • Royal Canin German Shepherd

    By on

This is only the second bag of Royal Canin but the first breed-specific Royal Canin we've fed our two male German Shepherds. They seem to love it, but only if I put a little hot water in it first. The kibble is very large. Their stool seems OK right now and they are just as goofy as always. Shipping was very quick and price is great. Ready to place another order.

  • Royal Canin GSD Formula is Wonderful

    By on

I have 2 GSDs and they have sensitive tummies. This Royal Canin GSD formula is excellent. And, my picky Sable actually likes it! No more runny stools. Woo hoo! The only drawback is the price. It's quite expensive for 30 lbs of dog food.

  • Tried as a mix with Fromm

    By on

I wanted to try this dog food for Azrael to use as a compliment to the Fromm food she's been on for over a year. She likes it. The larger morsels are keeping her from wolfing it down fast. She liked the taste immediately. I'm glad I decided to try this, because a day after I ordered this food - I got the email from Chewy that Fromm was no longer going to be associated with Chewy. Completely disheartening, because Azrael loved every product of Fromm's that I bought for her. I always believe in giving a variety of food to my dog (we ourselves love variety) - now I'll have to find another dog food that will complement the Royal Canin.

  • Excellent!

Our 5yo 110lb male shepherd Remington has severe allergies. We had him on Science Diet Zd which our vet recommended (of course, claimed it should help with the itching....yea right) for 3 years @ $100 per 30lb bag. He still scratched holes in his coat. We tried Chewy in the past for our other dog and were very pleased so we decided to try Royal Canin Adult. Within 25-30 days we've noticed a huge difference in how much better his coat is looking and his itching has been cut in half. His ears are looking better too! He used to constantly rub them raw on the carpet but now some hair is finally starting to grow back! • Amount to feed not specified

    By on

I was all excited to buy the German shepherd specific food and wasn't overly worried about the price because it was around $5 more per 30lb bag as the grain/gluten free food I buy him now. Well...... recommended feeding listed on the back says 7 -7 3/4 cups per day for this food! So it is literally double the amount I feed him now. Woof.
