Description

This Royal Canin formula is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherd puppies from 8 weeks to 15 months. The young German Shepherd tends to be more sensitive to digestive upset than other breeds, and also has alkaline skin just like an adult. Large puppies like German Shepherds grow quickly, and their active lifestyle can place stress on their joints that can have lifetime effects. That's why it's important to feed a diet that is tailor-made for their specific needs.

Why Pure Breed Dogs Need Tailored Nutrition

From their personalities to their distinctive physiologies, pure breed dogs have unique characteristics that make them sought-after and beloved companions. When choosing a formula, it's important to keep in mind the unique characteristics of your breed including:

Face and Jaw: All dogs fall into two basic jaw types: Brachycephalic or mesocephalic. Breeds with short, broad muzzles (like Bulldogs) are examples of a brachycephalic jaw. Breeds with a longer muzzle (like Labrador Retrievers) are examples of mesocephalic breeds. The jaw type, and even biting patterns can affect how a breed picks up kibble.

Skin Types: The skin's most important function is to serve as a barrier of protection-but not all breeds have the same skin type. From wrinkled and folded (which traps heat and moisture) to sensitive or water resistant, precise levels of key nutrients help to support a breed's unique skin health needs.

Distinctive Coats: There's more to a coat than meets the eye. From the color and texture to undercoats, each pure breed dog has a unique coat with unique needs.

Breed Specific Formulas

Every dog is unique. From the small, flat-faced Pug to the obesity-prone Labrador Retriever, Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition is tailor-made to address the unique needs of pure breed dogs. These breed specific formulas benefit from the latest Royal Canin research on the selection of the best protein sources, unique nutrients and tailor-made kibbles.

Formulated for German Shepherd Puppies

Royal Canin's German Shepherd Puppy Dry Dog Food is designed exclusively for pure breed German Shepherd puppies from 8 weeks to 15 months.

Digestive performance: Digestive health is essential during German Shepherd puppies' growth period. Their digestive system is not yet fully developed and can't absorb nutrients in the same way adult dogs can. This formula takes into account digestive sensitivity common in German Shepherd puppies, and includes L.I.P. proteins to help maintain a balanced intestinal flora.

Bone & joint health: German Shepherd Puppy Dry Dog Food supports healthy bones and joints with appropriate calcium and phosphorus content. This exclusive formula also helps maintain an ideal weight.

Natural defenses: During the growth period, German Shepherd puppies' natural defenses are not yet fully developed. This formula includes an exclusive complex of antioxidants including vitamins E and C, lutein and taurine to maintain their natural defenses.

Exclusive Kibble

German Shepherds have a long, strong muzzle with equally strong teeth. The size, shape and texture of the kibble in German Shepherd Puppy Dry Dog Food is exclusively designed for easy pick up while also encouraging puppies to chew.

Customer Reviews

Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy Dry Dog Food is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 92.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly Recommend I have an almost 8 month old puppy who is an extremely picky eater. We had tried several other great brands, but had no luck with getting him to eat enough without mixing in lot of wet food. The last time I bought food we gave this brand a try. When the food was delivered to our door I opened the bag and immediately my little puppy put his nose in the bag and started eating!! We have had much less trouble with eating. I am absolutely impressed! Also, kudos to Chewy for their amazing selection and customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for dogs with skin allergies We saw this baby girl GSD for sale in a newspaper ad and noted that she looked like she needed to be rescued. Sure enough she came with all sorts of health problems, skin allergies as in severe scratching and runny stools to name a few. So due to her many health problems she was not pleasant to look at. Still people were polite when they saw her – even the Veterinarian asked if we had shaved her (cause she was not pretty). After several vet visits and several brands of puppy we were very fortunate that one vet recommended Royal Canin. This changed our lives for the better. Her skin allergies stopped, her coat is now beautiful very soft and shiny. People cannot believe she is the same dog (Vet was very impressed with her new shiny soft coat). And yes the stools became normal and she has gorgeous white teeth. Royal Canin worked for us and we would recommend it based her transformation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! My GSD puppy loves this food and his digestion is back on track. He can't gulp it down because of its unique shape and his sensitive stomach manages Royal Canin GSD Large Breed Puppy food quite well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good Okay, so I am a bit confused. All of the websites that look at dog food ingredients say this is a bad dog food and I have to agree based on the ingredients. BUT, I have seen so many 5 star customer reviews with great testimonials and even vet recommendations. I ended up with this food because I have a very picky 4 month old GSD. We tried all of the great foods, including raw and she just wasn't eating. She even went 24 hours refusing to eat because she didn't like what we were feeding her. So, off to the pet store and we brought home 3 dry dog foods and she chose this one! She is now eating well. I am adding supplements to make sure she gets what she needs. I really wanted to raise her on raw food, but she is having none of that. I guess I have a junk food puppy, but at least she is eating! Now we will see how she does on it longer term.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved our German Shepherd! For months, we had struggled with irritable tummies, runny stools (if they were thicker than water, which was rare), and we were struggling to help our not-so-little guy gain weight. Then, we decided to take our chances and buy a big, expensive bag of food compared to all the things we'd been trying. We'd even tried rice with canned food three times a day! Even chicken and chicken livers! We tried it all! But within 24 hours (yes, 24 HOURS) on Royal Canin for German Shepherd puppies, we saw a big change. More solid stools (moving up to pretty darn close to hard stools with continued use), shinier coat, and slow but steady weight gain! We love this food and will never go back! We're even considering the Labrador Retriever food for our-- you guessed it-- Labrador Retriever! Thank you Royal Canin for saving our puppy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes them CHEW and it's easy on their stomach... I know that there are some who are not fans of this brand, especially with all of the "grain-free" diets that seem to be popular right now. I have had my working shepherd on "Solid Gold" and on "Taste OTW"... Both are better foods because the y have less grains and a higher protein content. A working/athletic dog like a GSD has a sensitive stomach because of the compressed area that all of the digestive organs are located in. An athlete doesn't eat STEAK or RIBS before a marathon or sporting event... They eat grains and Carbs (Pastas and breads).... that keeps athletic bodies running smother in high stress conditions! This food won't work for everybody (no food will), but if you have an athletic or working GSD as I do.... I would highly recommend this food or its Adult GSD counterpart. Your GSD's stools will be solid and he will not burn out (and loose focus) in mid-activity...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stands out as superior First of all, this is the first dry bag dog food I've seen with a zip lock top (I bought the largest bag size). That fact alone impresses me. I can now "burp" off most excess air and close the bag -- which makes for better storage than even air-tight containers, which will still have a large amount of air as the food quantity goes down. The tightened bag will not "relax" even if I lift it up by the top, telling me that the seal holds well. Second, there is a significantly stronger aroma from this food compared to others -- which I can only assume means it has "meatier" or "oilier" contents. I assume the food is "richer," because it smells richer to me. Finally, I'm seeing tighter stools with this food than other premium puppy dry chow -- even when I mix it with premium canned. It's never easy to be certain which food is the best, but this food gives every clue that it stands a bit above the rest. That's enough for me (it's the best I can do, being that I can't run direct tests between puppies raised on this vs other brands).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Nutrition! Food was recommended by my veterinarian. All essential nutrition needs for growing German Shepherd puppy are contained in nice dry kibble. Palatability is awesome. Can hardly keep her out of bag when serving and never a piece of kibble left in the bowl. I highly recommend!
