Feeding guidelines are provided for each of our diets and indicate the amount to feed per day. We recommend dividing the recommended amount into two or three meals per day.

Storage Instructions: The best way to keep the product fresh is to store it in the original bag, inside a container, and use within 1-2 months. Since the product is naturally preserved, the longer the product is open, the more the product can oxidize. We do not recommend freezing the product because that can draw out the moisture in the kibble and upon thawing, it can mold.

Once open, we recommend using the canned product within 48 hours. Our formulators recommend adding a thin layer of water to the top of the can prior to refrigeration to keep the food moist. The food that is left out at room temperature should be discarded after 2 hours.

If your pet does not like refrigerated food, try heating it to room temperature by adding warm water.

Transition Instructions

We recommend at least a 7 day transition before you begin feeding the new food exclusively. Start by mixing 75% of the old diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the old diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the old diet with 75% of the new diet. On the 7th day, you can feed the new food exclusively. This allows your pet’s digestive system to smoothly adapt to the new food.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Royal Canin diets preserved?

All of our dry diets are preserved naturally with mixed tocopherols, citric acid, and rosemary extract. Our canned diets are naturally preserved and sterilized during the cooking and canning process.

Where do the ingredients in Royal Canin diets come from?

We select our ingredients based on multiple factors, including the supplier’s compliance with our quality and food safety requirements, consistent availability, and on the nutrients required to meet the dietary needs of the pet.

Royal Canin is making strides towards sustainability by attempting to obtain sources of raw materials as close to each manufacturing facility as possible. In some cases, we use international suppliers, because only those suppliers can offer raw materials that comply with our quality and food safety standards.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain by-products?

Royal Canin chooses ingredients because they deliver high-quality nutrients that support our customized pet food formulas. Using chicken by-product meal instead of chicken meal for example will allow Royal Canin to maintain its highly customized nutrient standards while achieving a more secure and sustainable supply.

Why do some Royal Canin diets contain grains?

Grains can be a healthy part of any cat or dog’s diet. As always, we focus on the nutrients each ingredient provides and grains can provide many important nutrients.

How do you ensure Royal Canin diets are safe for my pet?

Our Quality and Food Safety systems are state-of-the-art and we continue to invest heavily in new technology to make sure they remain that way.

  • We put our suppliers through a rigorous selection process that doesn’t end with our first purchase.
  • We monitor every load delivered to our plants to verify the safety and quality of the ingredients we use to make pet food.
  • We perform tests on finished pet foods before they are shipped to our customers.
  • We manufacture every pet food we sell, in plants that we own; our plants are ISO 9001:2008 certified for Quality Management and ISO 22000 certified for Food Safety.

How do I know which Royal Canin diet is right for my pet?

Based on size, age, lifestyle, and breed, each cat or dog has unique nutritional needs. For healthy pets, use our Product Selector to find the right diet for your cat or dog.

If your pet is experiencing health issues, please refer to your veterinarian for more information. Your veterinarian will consider multiple factors when recommending an appropriate diet.

You are right, getting to this stage for your dog food is definitely a journey. Sorry you and your Pup had to travel it too. Please check the label on your bag. The kibble in the photo on the left that you picked up at PetSmart appears to be from a bag of the Moderate Calorie version, while the picture on the right from Chewy is from a bag of Adult HP. I know them both well. We switched from the Moderate Calorie to the Adult HP because our girl was starting to lose a bit of weight. I must say that Chewy has been fabulous to work with and they truly went above and beyond to ensure that we didn't run out over a holiday weekend when none of the local vets had anything in stock! I even make her "treats" by rolling the canned food into little balls and then rolling those in the crushed kibble! … more

  • Food Allergies

    By on

Our precious Molly Mae (Springer Spaniel) has allergies to several foods and a total of 26 allergies. She has been taking shots since she was only 9 months old and just turned 8. Our vet suggested she may have a larger amount of food allergies and suggested we try the Royal Canin Vet Diet (Hydrolyzed Protein Adult HP Dry Dog Food. . She said it may take 10-12 weeks to start seeing a difference in the licking of her 1 front paw and both rear paws. She licks until they bleed which is heartbreaking. So far after 4 weeks she has had some improvement in her licking and hopefully it will continue to get better. We must give credit to the Royal Canin Vet diet. • Extremely Happy With Chewy

    By on

I ordered on Friday Night around 8pm a little concerned because my golden was running a little low on his food and getting a bag locally isn't the easiest process. I was happily surprised that it came the next day in the afternoon. Great product with an extremely easy process to get it. I am a little curious in the jump in cost but with it still being $20 cheaper than anywhere I can get, it's still worth it.

  • Harley has new food!!! Yay!!!

    By on

Oh my, I had such terrible angst when I was told that my hypoallergic dog's food was being discontinued. Through several caring emails with Chewy.com personnel, I received several glowing recommendations for replacements. After contacting my Veterinarian, he concurred and a new food was chosen. We have begun the slow switch-over process and all is well! Harley loves his new food!!

  • My dog loves it!

    By on

We had tried the other brand for the Hydrolyzed food but she did not like it as much. She is eating it without needing any soft food or enticing and her stools have been better after 7 months of not being ok. Her allergies seem to be more broad than just food so she still needs her injection of cytopoint every 5-6 weeks but her tummy is the best it has been. It costs a little less than other name brands too and every bit helps!

  • Great food

    By on

My vet prescribed this food for my dog, who is 15, because he was loosing weight and not absorbing the nutrients from any other food we had tried. He has been on this food for a little over a month and has gained 3lbs. He loves this food and now gets excited every time its breakfast time or dinner time!

  • The food itself works by purchasing it from Chewy? That's why I'm unsure..

    By on

Okay, I'm going to skip telling the part of my journey with my Pup to getting this food -- I've been purchasing this food from Petsmart and it just makes it much easier to order online and our vet recommended I use Chewy.com.. Comparison of what I have purchased and what was dropped off at my door less than ten minutes ago..

  • Rosie Recommended

Our Westie just LOVES this food. We are feeding this food to our dog because our Vet recommended it to help determine if our Westie is allergic to a certain protein. Its seems effective so far. Our dog's coat and skin seem very healthy, soft and she's not licking her paws as she was. We highly recommend this food.

  • Working for bad skin allergies.

    By on

Vet recommended this as my dog has terrible skin allergies. It's been about two weeks but she is off her other medications and this food seems to be keeping her skin in good shape. My dog also actually likes the food, I caught her trying to eat out of the bag which I've never had her do before. Ordering through Chewy and sending the prescription was an easy process.
