  • Wonderful base mix, but make sure your pup is getting enough calories!

    By on

First and foremost, we and our 1 y/o, 55lb active Labrador LOVE this base mix. It takes the guesswork out of getting all of the vitamins and nutrients right for our pup, while also providing him with human grade food. But we noticed: in following the serving recommendation on the box, our Lab lacked energy and started losing weight fast. Within a couple weeks, we started seeing his ribs. So we took a closer look: we fed him the daily amounts for 50-75lb which was ~1c base mix, 1.5c water and 1.5c of protein (cooked lean chicken) and found that it was FAR from being enough food for our dog. Under 1000 calories when he's supposed to be getting almost 1500! So now, instead of measuring his protein First and foremost, we and our 1 y/o, 55lb active Labrador LOVE this base mix. Under 1000 calories when he's supposed to be getting almost 1500! So now, instead of measuring his protein by CUP, we weigh it. He gets 14oz of lean protein (cooked chicken, and ground turkey & beef) AND the 2tbsp of wild salmon oil suggested as extra on the box, along with his base mix. VAST improvement! He's slowly gaining a healthy weight back, his coat looks amazing and he has a lot more energy. I just wish Honest Kitchen would advise on the box to WEIGH the protein amount vs measuring it in cups. Too much room for error, which we fell into. And I'd highly suggest supplementing with salmon oil, as suggested. It's an easy and beneficial way to add some healthy calories! … more

  • Love this brand!

    By on

Switched to THK when Orijen moved production to the U.S. and now I'm wondering why I ever fed my animals kibble. Marked uptick in energy and their stool is really good looking. I have used the base mixes and complete mixes and liked all of them but settled on using both base mixes half and half and cook my own protein which I rotate weekly. I also like that they are USDA certified and their recall history looks good with only one recall which was due to parsley they got from a supplier which they found out after the fact could have had salmonella which they QC test for but never found any nor had any reported incidents from customers. Regardless they recalled as a precaution and according to Switched to THK when Orijen moved production to the U.S. and now I'm wondering why I ever fed my animals kibble. That makes me feel like they care. … more

  • Dog laps up green food

    By on

Didn't know how my dog would take to green sludge but apparently looks aren't everything because she licks up every little bit. Have been mixing this dried assemblage of flakes 50/50, as recommended, with one of their meat based mixes (just add water and let soak a few minutes) with good results. Healthy, happy, vibrant dog eating doggie health food. Good bye, bagged kibble, even the high quality brands. This stuff has it beat. Would also be perfect for backpaking/camping with your dog!

  • LIfesaver for Golden Retriever

    By on

This food was a lifesaver for my Golden Retriever who reacted to every food I tried him on, both commercial and homemade. This worked beautifully for him. I looked at the pkg when it arrived and thought surely all that plant material would mean diarrhea, but NO, he stools were perfectly normal. A friend uses it for her dogs, too. We found if the stools were a little too soft to just add a bit more meat.

  • AMAZING Product!

    By on

I would never go back to regular canned or dry kibble food EVER again. And I don't think my 3 collies would eat it if I did. Simply put, they LOVE it, and there are so many choices. I ordered it with the protein already in it. I started them on it this morning and they licked the porcelain off the bowls! RUN to this fabulous product. Thank you Honest Kitchen.

  • Our girls love it!

    By on

I accidentally found this when our previous dog kibble was no longer available via Chewy. It was a happy accident for everyone! I use this plant based mix with the chicken mix to stretch out the more expensive chicken option. Plus...we all need more veggies...right ;)

  • I just found out that my rescue is very finicky

    By on

I love The Honest Kitchen products and so have all of my other dogs. My new Old English Sheepdog/Australian Shepherd mix puppy turned up his nose at this mix. He's more of a tripe kind of guy. I still think The Honest Kitchen is a great company with quality products.

  • Preference Grain Free Base Mix

    By on

I have been using this product for approximately 2 years and my three girls LOVE it. They've been on a raw diet since they were 9 weeks old, but when I added the preference grain free mix, they went nuts!! They're energetic & happy, with soft, shiny coats and they do NOT have runny stools or any other health issues. My girls just turned 3 in July 2017 I highly recommend this product. Chewy has made it possible to purchase several boxes because of their competitive prices and that makes it even better yet!

  • Wonderful product!

    By on

I make homemade dog food. I have for several years now. I was happy to discover this product to relieve the amount of time it took to make my homemade. I'm happy that my boy likes this product. We have health issues that requires his food to be pureed, so he had no problem eating this. My meat of choice with the grain free base mix is turkey.

  • Awesome "real" food for your pet

    By on

This mix is incredible. I didn't think my dogs would eat it because they are used to canned and kibble. But I rehydrate the mix with a water and broth, and for the protein I mix in homemade protein or the Wellness 95% beef. There's a great variety of veggies and fruit and my dogs love it. It's so much better than the kibble or canned.
