Is the water filtered before it gets to the pump? I have two very playful cats who don't mind playing next to their current fountain. Needless to say, fur is constantly being cleared from the pump - to the point I fabricated a fur filter out of cheese cloth and waterproof medical tape.

The water is filtered continuously as it pours out the pump.
HOW LONG DO THE FILTERS LAST AND HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO CHANGE THEM?

We'd recommend cleaning the filter within 2-4 weeks. Once the water gets dirty more often you'll notice a change in the water, you'll want to change the filter.
are the filters recyclable?

These filters are absolutely recyclable.
We have an Apex Alkaline water filtration system in our house and I'm curious as to how the filters here would interact with our home, filtered alkaline water? In addition, what do these carbon filter's, that come with this unit, actually filter and add back into the water? Thank you.

The carbon filters are designed to pull out chlorine, sediment, odor, and volatile organic compounds as well as improve taste of the water. The filters have been tested and don't add anything back into the water.

These are the ones to buy!

I had tried an 'imitation' brand and was very disappointed at how they left black residue on the fountain. I just purchased a box of these, and I really like that they arrived in a sturdy box and are individually wrapped in a little zip lock bag. There is no more residue on the fountain, the water is clear, and I'm pleased with my purchase. I rinse the filter, and also let it soak for about 20 minutes in a glass of water, changing the water in between. And with Chewy, shipping is quick. Glad they had these in stock.

Cat water fountain and filters

I have been using these filters for years. This is the second fountain by Drinkwell because the first one wore out. These filters keep the water clean and pure and are decently priced.

Seem to work well

I have no previous experience with other filters of this type so no point of reference. I would certainly recommend using them since the manufacturer recommends it and I haven't seen a less expensive alternative to try.

Wear Out Quickly

I like these but I feel like they wear out quickly. I'm replacing mine every week ornso and I wasn't expecting that.

change every 2 weeks!

Used these for the short amount of time my stainless steel fountain worked and 4 weeks is way too long of a time between changes. It was NASTY after 4 weeks! Definitely recommend changing at 2 weeks especially if you’re adding water frequently.
