For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |

1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
Troubleshooting
The fountain stopped working.
There are several possible causes for a fountain to stop working. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the motor to start pumping water once it’s refilled or plugged in. If water doesn’t flow after 5 minutes, try these troubleshooting tips:
- Check the cord. If it has any frayed or exposed wires, your pet may have been chewing on the cord. To prevent this, you can purchase a cord cover from most hardware stores. You could also try securing the cord to the floor with duct tape .
- Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function. Please refer to the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to properly clean your motor. To clean the motor:
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a face plate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Water quality can also affect the pump and how effectively it runs. Hard water will cause calcium deposits to build up in the pump's cavity, blocking the impeller from spinning. If there is evidence of hard water build-up inside the pump, try adding plain white vinegar inside the pump's cavity (without the impeller) and allow it to soak for 10-15 minutes. Allow the impeller to soak in a separate bowl of vinegar for the same duration of time. Clean all fountain parts in soap and water before reassembling the fountain.
- Make sure the cord does not have any frayed or exposed wires due to pets possibly chewing the cord. If your pet is prone to chewing, visit your local hardware store and purchase a conduit cover to protect the cord.
- Pumps last for several years with proper cleaning. If the pump has been in regular use for this period of time, it may be old and need to be replaced.
- The fountain is to be used indoors only, with the exception of the Outdoor Dog Fountain. Outdoor usage for all other fountains can cause damage to the pump, at which point the pump would need to be replaced. The fountain parts and pump are not UL approved for outdoor use.
- If the pump was exposed to low water levels for a prolonged period of time, the pump's motor may have burned out and the pump may need to be replaced.
The motor is not working.
- Unplug the fountain then plug it back in.
- If the motor is humming, try cleaning the motor, making sure nothing is stuck around the impeller. You can also change the foam filter.
- If the motor is not humming, try replacing the pump.
- Never let the water in the bowl get below the minimum fill level. This can cause the pump to overheat and stop functioning. When refilling the bowl, make sure to add water before turning the fountain on.
The water’s not flowing as much as it used to.
- Disassemble and clean the pump.
- Clean the fountain, especially around the motor.
- Fill the fountain with water up to the max fill line.
- With a 360 Plastic or Stainless Steel fountain, the more spouts on the top, the weaker the water flow for each spout. Try switching to a top with one fewer spout opening.
There’s black dirt in the bowl. This black stuff is loose activated carbon from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. The carbon filter is made of organic coconut shells. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this. Some filters may shed more carbon than others due to differing consistency of carbonl in each batch of filters, so don’t be surprised if some filters leave behind more carbon dust than others.

How do I clean the fountain?
- Unplug the fountain, dump the water and disassemble the fountain.
- The fountain is dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord. Either wash in the top rack of your dishwasher or hand-wash these parts. If your dishwasher runs too hot, we recommend hand-washing. When hand-washing, use a bottle brush, aquarium brush, soft sponge, or brushes included in the Fountain Cleaning Kit and dish soap. (Please note: if you have the Avalon or Pagoda fountains, the filter housing is hand wash only. It is not dishwasher safe.)
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a faceplate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A cotton swab or small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Re-assemble fountain, replacing the filter and pre-filter as needed.
- Place the fountain where desired. Fill with water. Re-plug in fountain.
How can I make the filters last longer?
- Clean your fountain at least once a month or more often if needed.
- Replace all of the water in the bowl with fresh water between regular cleanings.
- If your fountain uses a foam filter or pre-filter, clean the pre-filter between regular fountain cleanings.
- Use pre-filtered or purified water to refill the fountain.
Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
How do I get my pets to drink from the fountain?
Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
- Set up the fountain without plugging it in. This way your pet can get used to drinking from the fountain without the noise and splash of running water.
- Plug in the fountain for short periods of time, until your pets begin to feel comfortable. Try setting it to a lower flow setting.
- Once your pet is somewhat used to the fountain, remove other water sources.
- If your pet still isn’t interested in the fountain, make it more appealing with some flavoring. Remove the filter from the fountain, then add tuna juice or bouillon to the water until your pet is used to the new product. After that, you can clean the fountain, replace the filter, and refill the fountain with regular water.
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Which side of the filter should face the front? Put the filter in the filter housing with the black side facing the front.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

Hard to put together
By Marilyn on Feb 18, 2021
This is a very well made fountain. However, no matter how I tried, I could not get it to work right. The instructions say there's a mark on the bowl where you're supposed to place the pump so the tower fits on correctly. There wasn't one on my fountain. I never could not get the tower to fit on the pump correctly so the water never came out of the spouts, just from underneath them. Also: One clamp would not clamp on the bowl. The electric cord was too short, although It has a second "plug" in the middle of the cord so you don't have to reach all the way to the outlet to unplug and refill the bowl. This is a very large fountain, probably better for big animals.

Doesn’t Quite Meet Expectations
By Justin on Feb 13, 2021
The bowl and spout are nicely made with an interesting two-piece design, included with various spout configurations, a flow control cap, and a optional filter as well. Unfortunately the included pump barely has any pressure at all. The concept is great, but I only get a trickle of water out the top instead of a stream like what is pictured. I’ve checked to make sure I assembled it properly, and the flow control was opened all the way. I even removed the water filter to see if it might’ve been clogged. To no avail, it is kind of a disappointment for the cost. That being said, my cats fell in love with the trickling water as opposed to their normal bowl. Finish wears off, among other issues.
By staci on Feb 12, 2021
I purchased this fountain almost two years ago, I think, and the interior of the dome is now ringed with what looks like rust marks. I've alternated between using the dishwasher and hand washing (soft cloth with dish soap--never anything abrasive) every five to seven days, and was pretty alarmed when I saw what looks like rust on a product touted as stainless steel. I have two rescues with an oral inflammatory disease, and seeing this made me furious. That aside, the filters need to be changed weekly, which, given the cost of the fountain, is not a great deal. Poor Filtering
By crittersx4 on Feb 3, 2021
This product is great for the first 5ish days after you change the filter and replace all the water. It very quickly starts gathering debris and things in the bowl part. The holes in the column part are too small you take in most things, so the actual filter doesn’t do much filtering. All of the gross stuff stays out in the bowl where they drink and it will start to get gross fast. The filters definitely don’t last as long as they claim. They also turn very gross very fast. Maybe if you only have cats this might be okay, but with dogs any dirt or dust they bring in on their snouts or any food crumbs left after they eat.

Paw power to the H2o
By Cooper on Feb 17, 2021
I love this water fountain. I am so glad that I purchased it. I do, recommend purchasing replacement filters right away, because, it tends to get filthy, and need replacing every 2 -3 weeks. I am adding them to my monthly chewy order for convenient service. My cats love it. They no longer spill the water and make a mess. Cleaning is a piece of cake too. Excellent buy for your paw friends.

Wish I wouldn't have spent the money
By CorgiMom on Jan 30, 2021
I bought this because my dog has always shown more interest in moving water. He likes to drink from creeks and streams. He has even drank from water I'm pouring into his regular bowl. Since I bought this he drinks less water, even though I have had to add more water to the dish. You may ask why I've had to add more water. That's because the water is leaking out of the bowl! I wish I hadn't recycled the boxes already. This was a $70 kick in the teeth. PLUS I spent extra on another purchase buying more filters! Maybe more like a 90 or 100 dollar kick.

The fountain is great.
By Manoa on Feb 1, 2021
The fountain is wonderful-my cats love it! What I don’t love are the clamps used w/the stainless steel fountain. The 3 clamps sent to hold the “funnel top” portion in place are plastic & each one broke in half when I was trying to put them in place on the bowl top. I have had bilateral hand surgery so believe me I can’t forcefully slam these things down on the rim. These clamps need to be made of stronger material AND at least 6 clamps should be sent to customer so there are 3 backups until stronger ones are sent w/fountain.

I hate it!
By AAAA on Feb 13, 2021
This water fountain is terrible! First of all, it’s huge and awkward looking anywhere I place it. Second, the clasps that hold it together are impossible to take off, not flexible at all, it is a complete struggle to take it apart to clean it. Third, the filtration is terrible. Fourth, my cat was pretty disinterested in it. The only good thing about this fountain is that it’s stainless steel.

Great apparatus!
By LuLu on Jan 27, 2021
My cat simply LOVES this fountain. It really has helped her. I believe it evens helps your cat bond to you more since it seems to know who put it there. Just make sure you read the book of instructions closely on the setup. Once you have it setup, you will LOVE it! If you think you did something wrong initially on the setup, you might have, just go over the book again and you will get it and your cat will love it or dog.. I have a cat. Be patient and give the animal a chance to get use to it and you will smile when you see the animal drinking from the fountain.

Water fountain for cats
By NatwithCats on Jan 17, 2021
Hello! I bought this water fountain about a year ago when I had about 8 cats and I have read the reviews about the issues for it and I wanted a water fountain that will be good for my cats. My cleaning process for this is I clean and change the white inside filter every week, because by that time the inside of the filter is dark gray or black. I also do a mid-week clean to just clean out if there's cat litter or it looks a bit dirty just to make it fresh. I also had to purchase this white square foam that goes around the battery (I change that every 2 weeks), so essentially you would have to purchase both the tube filter and the square foam filter. I haven't had any major issues with this product, just had to make sure to carefully take out the brackets and all the pieces when it comes to cleaning and putting it back. And also to carefully adjust the black band that seals the holder of the water filter to the stainless steel base. It does take time to do these but I think its worth it to ensure your animals are getting water into their diet. … more
