For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |

How do I clean the fountain?
- Unplug the fountain, dump the water and disassemble the fountain.
- The fountain is dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord. Either wash in the top rack of your dishwasher or hand-wash these parts. If your dishwasher runs too hot, we recommend hand-washing. When hand-washing, use a bottle brush, aquarium brush, soft sponge, or brushes included in the Fountain Cleaning Kit and dish soap. (Please note: if you have the Avalon or Pagoda fountains, the filter housing is hand wash only. It is not dishwasher safe.)
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a face plate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A cotton swab or small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Re-assemble fountain, replacing the filter and pre-filter as needed.
- Place the fountain where desired. Fill with water. Re-plug in fountain.
The pump is not working or the water is not flowing as much as it used to.
- Never let the water in the bowl get below the minimum fill level. This can cause the pump to overheat and stop functioning. When refilling the bowl, make sure to add water before turning the fountain on.
- Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function.
- Fill the fountain with water up to the max fill line.
- Ensure that the fountain is cleaned on a regular basis.
The fountain is too loud.
- A low humming noise is normal, but it should not be loud. Check the water level. If water level is too low then the pump will have to work harder causing it to be louder than normal.
- Unplug the fountain for 15 seconds. If the noise stops when plugged back in, it’s possible that some debris is caught on the impeller. Remove the pump and clean the impeller. Try rubbing a small amount of vegetable oil onto the magnetic pin with a Q-tip to lubricate the impeller.
There are black particles in the bowl. This is loose granulated carbon dust from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this.
The fountain feels slimy.
- If you have multiple pets or dogs use the fountain, the slimy feeling may be caused by your pet’s saliva. Change the water and clean your fountain more frequently to prevent this.
- Make sure the fountain parts are rinsed thoroughly after cleaning the fountain. Soap residue may cause the sliminess.
The adaptor is warm to the touch. Unplug the fountain and plug it into a surge protector.
The fountain is leaking.
- Make sure the rubber cap is inserted correctly into the raised post. This rubber seal secures the electrical power cord to the inside of the bowl and prevents leaking.
- Sometimes water around the fountain is caused by pets drinking. Some pets are prone to spilling. Watch your pet when he drinks to see if this is the cause. If it is, you can purchase a fountain mat or other water-resistant mat to place under the fountain.
The fountain seems dirty even after cleaning. If there is a white chalky substance in the fountain, your fountain may have a mineral deposit build-up from hard water. To remove these deposits, clean the fountain parts with an 80% water, 20% vinegar solution. Rinse all parts thoroughly afterwards. Use filtered or purified water instead of hard tap water to prevent this.

way too loud!
By bb77 on Feb 5, 2021
To be honest I thought all the reviews saying how loud it is were exaggerated. I mean how loud could it really be? Plenty loud it turns out; they weren’t exaggerating. This is the loudest fountain I’ve ever heard. I don’t mind water noise, in fact I find it peaceful, but this made me unable to sleep and even when I put it elsewhere in my house it was still very loud. I had high hopes since it’s ceramic and seems easier to clean than my old one, but I’ll be contacting Chewy to exchange for another Drinkwell fountain since I also bought filters and the cleaning kit.

Ceramic vs plastic
By winston on Feb 18, 2021
Had a Drinkwell Platinum fountain for years that worked well but was a pain to clean one of our Maine Coons has developed some gum issues and our vet suggested getting rid of the plastic fountain and go to the ceramic one. It took our three cats a few days to get used to the different flow, but they are getting used to it. Not sure if the ceramic fountain will cure Winston's ills, but it seems like it will be much easier to clean.

Not good enough
By Speckles on Jan 9, 2021
I, the human, really like this fountain because I actually find it to be very quiet and peaceful, it looks nicer than many others, it’s ceramic instead of plastic, and there are less crevices to make it easier to clean. But my water snob princess does not agree. The water doesn’t arch out enough to create a solid free flowing stream. (Just my theory, of course. My husband thinks she likes the noise of flowing water and this isn’t noisy enough) This was a replacement for a different fountain we had for a few years. I hated that one because of its crevices and noise. I couldn’t clean it thoroughly enough for my standards because I simply couldn’t get in the tight crevices! But that one had an adjustable I, the human, really like this fountain because I actually find it to be very quiet and peaceful, it looks nicer than many others, it’s ceramic instead of plastic, and there are less crevices to make it easier to clean. But that one had an adjustable flow and created a nice flowing arch, so Freckles loved it. So I actually stuck the arch attachment in the top of this fountain to create more of that water fountain effect and Freckles liked it! But it didn’t fit properly, made a mess, and was crazy loud. Then the other cat wouldn’t drink from it because she likes the pool of water at the top of this fountain and the attachment blocked that. I can’t win. So $70 down the drain... time to shop for a new acceptable fountain. … more

Does not work for us
By Xiaoyuan on Dec 12, 2020
I bought this one for my cat because it is ceramic. It has a nice look and my cat Mochi gets attracted as soon as I open the box. But when he drank from it, he got problems. He tried to drink from the bowl but then his entire face got wet, and he tried to reach the top with his front legs on the edge of the bowl but got his legs wet. In the end he had to lick from the side of the bowl and got no water at all. After all these trials, he stopped drinking for the rest of the day. I got worried and changed back to the plastic flower fountain that he likes. Some other cons: 1. the motor is not stable at all. After using it for several hours, the water pressure got weaker. 2. Compared to the flower fountain which holds water inside and filters every drop it gets outside, this fountain keeps most of the water outside. It's totally random which part of water gets picked to be filtered. After one day of use and when I gave it up and tried to pour the water, I found many cat hairs inside the bowl. Pros: 1. I like the look and the pure white color. 2. I saw many reviews saying it's noisy, but I found the water sound very relaxing. It's just the sound of water falling down. If you think it's noisy, just fill it with more water to reduce the distance from the top to the water surface. … more

Disappointed
By 1FLOP on Feb 9, 2021
As of this morning it is nothing more than a bowl. The pump didn’t even last 5 months. Very disappointed. Up until this morning my cats loved it. You’d think for the price of the item the pump would last longer than 4.5 months

It's just the thing.
By Sandra on Feb 19, 2021
I really like this fountain. It was worth the cost. It's nice to look at, just the right size for a thirsty cat and I like the gentle trickle of water. I like that it's ceramic and not plastic.

We like it
By Rosie on Dec 11, 2020
I and the cats are very happy with the ceramic fountain. It looks nice and the motor is much quieter than one we had in the past. The soft trickling sound is nice, but we don't hear it anymore because it is constant and just part of room. Plus the box is the perfect size for Otto's nap.

Quality water fountain
By Leslie on Jan 8, 2021
Although this was a bit expensive, this fountain inspires my cats to drink, is easy (enough) to clean, and is sturdy. I really wanted to stay away from plastic and find this ceramic fountain to be good looking and healthy.

Too Loud for me
By IreneO on Dec 19, 2020
I really wanted to like this fountain. I bought it after my other one broke and it wasn't available. I don't know if it's because it's ceramic or not, but it is beyond loud. I cannot stand it. I had coworkers comment on it during my work calls. Very disappointed.

Sadly it didn't work for us
By KathrynH on Nov 7, 2020
Very nicely designed and I wanted so much for this to work and have my 4 y.o. & 6 y.o. cats drinking more water after both having a UTI. Sadly both cats wouldn't go near this fountain, even when I turned-off the water flow ... they seemed scared of the noise it made. Perhaps younger cats would take to it, but my slightly older cats rejected the change. Chewy as always was fantastic and allowed me to return it with a full refund. I am very sad it didn't work for us.
