For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Replace the foam filter every 1 - 2 months. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently. The ceramic bowl and tower are top-shelf dishwasher safe. Hand wash all other fountain parts.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
If hard water is an issue where you live, you may see white mineral deposits inside the housing and inside the pump. These mineral deposits may eventually prevent the impeller from turning properly. To avoid having to replace the pump:
- Clean the pump more frequently
- Clean with regular white vinegar and let the vinegar soak for several minutes down inside the pump’s cavity
- Use bottled water
Troubleshooting
The pump is not working or the water is not flowing as much as it used to.
- Never let the water in the bowl get below the minimum fill level. This can cause the pump to overheat and stop functioning. When refilling the bowl, make sure to add water before turning the fountain on.
- Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function.
- Fill the fountain with water up to the max fill line.
- Ensure that the fountain is cleaned on a regular basis.
The fountain is too loud.
- A low humming noise is normal, but it should not be loud. Check the water level. If water level is too low then the pump will have to work harder causing it to be louder than normal.
- Unplug the fountain for 15 seconds. If the noise stops when plugged back in, it’s possible that some debris is caught on the impeller. Remove the pump and clean the impeller. Try rubbing a small amount of vegetable oil onto the magnetic pin with a Q-tip to lubricate the impeller.
There are black particles in the bowl. This is loose granulated carbon dust from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this.
The fountain feels slimy.
- If you have multiple pets or dogs use the fountain, the slimy feeling may be caused by your pet’s saliva. Change the water and clean your fountain more frequently to prevent this.
- Make sure the fountain parts are rinsed thoroughly after cleaning the fountain. Soap residue may cause the sliminess.
The adapter is warm to the touch. Unplug the fountain and plug it into a surge protector.
The fountain is leaking.
- Make sure the rubber cap is inserted correctly into the raised post. This rubber seal secures the electrical power cord to the inside of the bowl and prevents leaking.
- Sometimes water around the fountain is caused by pets drinking. Some pets are prone to spilling. Watch your pet when he drinks to see if this is the cause. If it is, you can purchase a fountain mat or other water-resistant mat to place under the fountain.
The fountain seems dirty even after cleaning. If there is a white chalky substance in the fountain, your fountain may have a mineral deposit build-up from hard water. To remove these deposits, clean the fountain parts with an 80% water, 20% vinegar solution. Rinse all parts thoroughly afterwards. Use filtered or purified water instead of hard tap water to prevent this.

How do I clean the fountain?
- Unplug the fountain, dump the water and disassemble the fountain.
- The fountain is dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord. Either wash in the top rack of your dishwasher or hand-wash these parts. If your dishwasher runs too hot, we recommend hand-washing. When hand-washing, use a bottle brush, aquarium brush, soft sponge, or brushes included in the Fountain Cleaning Kit and dish soap. (Please note: if you have the Avalon or Pagoda fountains, the filter housing is hand wash only. It is not dishwasher safe.)
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a faceplate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A cotton swab or small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Re-assemble fountain, replacing the filter and pre-filter as needed.
- Place the fountain where desired. Fill with water. Re-plug in fountain.
How can I make the filters last longer?
- Clean your fountain at least once a month or more often if needed
- Replace all of the water in the bowl with fresh water between regular cleanings
- If your fountain uses a foam filter or pre-filter, clean the pre-filter between regular fountain cleanings
- Use pre-filtered or purified water to refill the fountain
Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
How do I get my pets to drink from the fountain? Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
- Set up the fountain without plugging it in. This way your pet can get used to drinking from the fountain without the noise and splash of running water.
- Plug in the fountain for short periods of time, until your pets begin to feel comfortable. Try setting it to a lower flow setting.
- Once your pet is somewhat used to the fountain, remove other water sources.
- If your pet still isn’t interested in the fountain, make it more appealing with some flavoring. Remove the filter from the fountain, then add tuna juice or bouillon to the water until your pet is used to the new product. After that, you can clean the fountain, replace the filter, and refill the fountain with regular water.
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2-4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

A little noisy, but easy to get used to
By Kitastrophe on Apr 8, 2021
Decided to get this fountain after the cheap one I bought a few months ago crapped out (Catit flower fountain). Since my little cat likes drinking running water from faucets so much she took to the first one almost right away, but my other cat didn't care for it. Once the og fountain died, I pulled the trigger on this one. Once it was all set up, both cats started drinking from it almost immediately! The splashing water is a little on the noisy side, but if you've ever wished you had a water feature around for ambient noise, it sounds just like a little babbling stream and only took a couple days to get used to. Only a couple parts so it's easy to clean, and looks very modern and stylish Decided to get this fountain after the cheap one I bought a few months ago crapped out (Catit flower fountain). Solved our tipping problem
By Shmuelabella on Mar 20, 2021
One of my cats loves water. So much that she rubs her face against the bowl rim and tips it over on the regular. Also when my 2 cats would play they’d run around and knock over the water tower we had. A mess almost every morning lately. I’ve had to get used to the sound, but other than that it’s a total slam dunk. My cat loves drinking out of the top and from the stream down the side. No tipping over, worth every penny for our sanity.

Beautiful fountain, makes noise
By RoSe on Mar 31, 2021
I LOVE this fountain, my cat loves fountains and drinking from the sink, so I specifically got this fountain rather than the other Drinkwell models because of the stream of water. The double filter system is amazing, and the reservoir size is great for busy homes where you can't refill it every day. My cat loves the running water sound, but for those that are sound-sensitive it might be more than you'd prefer. This is perfect for my downstairs livingroom, but when it was in my bedroom to introduce to my cat, I definitely had to turn it off, because it is not quiet.

Bad Design
By HLK1 on Mar 30, 2021
My cats did not care for this fountain. The design makes it impossible for them to drink from the basin and the waterfall on each side is positioned to close to the fountain. If they want to drink they have extend their body across the whole fountain to drink from the top. Only 2 of my cats even tried it, the others passed it up. There are two filters, the charcoal one and then another mesh filter that goes around the pump. The mesh plastic filter smelled so bad like chemicals. I didn’t even want to put it on, because I was afraid it would make the water taste bad, but I installed it anyway.

Not designed for cats
By Rachel on Mar 17, 2021
Unless your cat is a faucet drinker this isn't a great buy. My cats previous fountain broke and I thought this would be a nice upgrade. From the photos it looked like she would have the option to drink from the basin or the spout part, but the center piece is huge and she cant fit her head to drink out of the basin without the fountain pouring on her. She can only drink from the little top part, and she isn't a fan of how fast the water flows. She's a relatively low maintenance cat, not usually finicky, so I was really surprised. It looks lovely, but it is not really functional. Its also insanely loud. She has lots of fun watching it, so if you're looking to add some ambiance to your cats eating Unless your cat is a faucet drinker this isn't a great buy. Seemed really great!
By RagnarsMom on Mar 16, 2021
I really liked this. I can see why other customers said it was loud but I found it to be very soothing. My cats all loved it. The unfortunate problem turned out to be that it is quite delicate! I have taken it apart several times for cleaning with no issue (bought the drinkwell cleaning kit with it. Highly recommend! ) but for some reason it just snapped this time! We are all very heartbroken. Tried to repair but no luck :/ very expensive to only last a few months....

Too loud. Do not recommend
By Amanda on Apr 6, 2021
This fountain is so loud that I unplug it when I’m relaxing and the cat - so far - will only drink from it unplugged. It’s not the motor that is so loud but the water splashing on both sides. We have the drinkwell seascape fountain which is great. Not a fan of this one. It has a nice appearance but that doesn’t make up for the noise. Wouldn’t recommend. Not so sure I’ll use this for anything other than an expensive (unplugged) water bowl.

can’t live without it
By CatMom on Mar 23, 2021
With five cats who are always ‘thirsty’ and interested in faucets, I have purchased the specific fountain three or four times over the last decade. They are wonderful, even though they are a bit challenging to clean. Once you have figured out a routine it’s quite simple. My cats love this and I have actually dashed out in a rush to buy another one when a former unit stopped working after a kitchen accident. If properly maintained it will last years. Great purchase, especially when you can catch a sale!

Drinkwell Pagod Ceramic Dog & Cat Fountain
By DianeS on Mar 14, 2021
This is a great product and I love the glass design. One can hear the water fall which doesn't bother me. Just like any other fountain where water has to fall into a dish. I'm going to return it for another glass model that has more of a round basin. I think this would be great if the fountain portion was positioned at the back of the dish with a rounder or at least more room in the front for larger animals. Our black lab, while she will drink from the top of it, she still prefers the larger basin to drink from and ends up wet on her ears.

Too loud - already looking to replace it
By Kimf on Mar 26, 2021
The ceramic is easy to clean and my senior cat can’t scratch it and ruin it. It also holds a lot of water. That’s the good parts of this water fountain. But it is too loud. It is a constant stream of water, I’m assuming to attract the cats but it drives me crazy. You can’t adjust the pump to slow down the water either. If you get this I recommend putting it somewhere you won’t be able to hear it.
