For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Replace the foam filter every 1 - 2 months. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently. The ceramic bowl and tower are top-shelf dishwasher safe. Hand wash all other fountain parts.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
If hard water is an issue where you live, you may see white mineral deposits inside the housing and inside the pump. These mineral deposits may eventually prevent the impeller from turning properly. To avoid having to replace the pump:
- Clean the pump more frequently
- Clean with regular white vinegar and let the vinegar soak for several minutes down inside the pump’s cavity
- Use bottled water
Troubleshooting
The pump is not working or the water is not flowing as much as it used to.
- Never let the water in the bowl get below the minimum fill level. This can cause the pump to overheat and stop functioning. When refilling the bowl, make sure to add water before turning the fountain on.
- Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function.
- Fill the fountain with water up to the max fill line.
- Ensure that the fountain is cleaned on a regular basis.
The fountain is too loud.
- A low humming noise is normal, but it should not be loud. Check the water level. If water level is too low then the pump will have to work harder causing it to be louder than normal.
- Unplug the fountain for 15 seconds. If the noise stops when plugged back in, it’s possible that some debris is caught on the impeller. Remove the pump and clean the impeller. Try rubbing a small amount of vegetable oil onto the magnetic pin with a Q-tip to lubricate the impeller.
There are black particles in the bowl. This is loose granulated carbon dust from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this.
The fountain feels slimy.
- If you have multiple pets or dogs use the fountain, the slimy feeling may be caused by your pet’s saliva. Change the water and clean your fountain more frequently to prevent this.
- Make sure the fountain parts are rinsed thoroughly after cleaning the fountain. Soap residue may cause the sliminess.
The adapter is warm to the touch. Unplug the fountain and plug it into a surge protector.
The fountain is leaking.
- Make sure the rubber cap is inserted correctly into the raised post. This rubber seal secures the electrical power cord to the inside of the bowl and prevents leaking.
- Sometimes water around the fountain is caused by pets drinking. Some pets are prone to spilling. Watch your pet when he drinks to see if this is the cause. If it is, you can purchase a fountain mat or other water-resistant mat to place under the fountain.
The fountain seems dirty even after cleaning. If there is a white chalky substance in the fountain, your fountain may have a mineral deposit build-up from hard water. To remove these deposits, clean the fountain parts with an 80% water, 20% vinegar solution. Rinse all parts thoroughly afterwards. Use filtered or purified water instead of hard tap water to prevent this.

How do I clean the fountain?
- Unplug the fountain, dump the water and disassemble the fountain.
- The fountain is dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord. Either wash in the top rack of your dishwasher or hand-wash these parts. If your dishwasher runs too hot, we recommend hand-washing. When hand-washing, use a bottle brush, aquarium brush, soft sponge, or brushes included in the Fountain Cleaning Kit and dish soap. (Please note: if you have the Avalon or Pagoda fountains, the filter housing is hand wash only. It is not dishwasher safe.)
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a faceplate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A cotton swab or small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Re-assemble fountain, replacing the filter and pre-filter as needed.
- Place the fountain where desired. Fill with water. Re-plug in fountain.
How can I make the filters last longer?
- Clean your fountain at least once a month or more often if needed
- Replace all of the water in the bowl with fresh water between regular cleanings
- If your fountain uses a foam filter or pre-filter, clean the pre-filter between regular fountain cleanings
- Use pre-filtered or purified water to refill the fountain
Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
How do I get my pets to drink from the fountain? Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
- Set up the fountain without plugging it in. This way your pet can get used to drinking from the fountain without the noise and splash of running water.
- Plug in the fountain for short periods of time, until your pets begin to feel comfortable. Try setting it to a lower flow setting.
- Once your pet is somewhat used to the fountain, remove other water sources.
- If your pet still isn’t interested in the fountain, make it more appealing with some flavoring. Remove the filter from the fountain, then add tuna juice or bouillon to the water until your pet is used to the new product. After that, you can clean the fountain, replace the filter, and refill the fountain with regular water.
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2-4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

Seems good and not actually loud
By John on Dec 28, 2020
Easy to set up and the kittens took to it immediately. Looks easy to clean and is reasonably nice looking, though the blue is not as strong a blue as it looked in the pictures. I don't know what all these other people are talking about, but this fountain isn't loud. Unsurprisingly, it's about the same volume as someone pouring water slowly into a bowl mostly full of water from an inch up, which is to say that I can hear it when I'm nearby, but I can't imagine it interfering with anything at all.

Gorgeous fountain
By Koabella on Jan 15, 2021
I have had drinkwell fountains in past so knew this would be of excellent quality. I received today and am not disappointed. I absolutely love the design and openness for my pets to drink. I did read other reviews that said it was loud - I have to say I don’t find it overly loud - you only hear the water fountain sounds - which kind of is expected Thank you for an excellent product!

Ceramic Water Fountain
By Barb on Jan 4, 2021
All 3 cats and my dog took to the fountain right away. I like that the filtration keeps the water clean with so many little faces in the waterbowl all day long! My daughters 90lb Golden loves it too! He drinks from the top and doesnt splash the water all around like with a smaller bowl. The only downfall is that the sound of the water falling is quite loud but it doesn't bother me, it's worth it!

Great Fountain
By MelO on Nov 27, 2020 Top 50 Contributor
It really is a very nice looking fountain. One issue is the loudness of the water if that bothers you, but I seen people have come up with their own fix for that by placing rocks/stones in there. I haven't tried that. One of my cats loves the plastic fountain that looks similar to this one, so I thought she would love this one, especially since the material is supposed to be better for them. Sadly, she hasn't taken a liking to this one. I haven't noticed my other cat drinking from it either. I'm sure my puppy would as he'll drink water from anywhere, but I was hoping to have this one set up just for the cats because they don't care much for puppy slobber in their water. Very nice fountain
By Debb on Jan 11, 2021
This is a very nice fountain, easy to set up, my cat drank from it the first few minutes after that he lost interest. I personally found the sound was calming but some may think it's too loud. Since my cat wasn't using it I had to return it. I really wish this would have worked out.

Cute, but very LOUD
By Loud on Dec 18, 2020
I almost returned this because of how loud it is. I have 3 elderly cats who need to drink a lot of water for their kidneys. It seems to be working well for them even though it is so annoying. My husband calls it the outdoor landscaping fountain due to the noise. I had to adjust the top slightly to give the cats room to drink. One of them drinks from the top like the photo shows, but the other 2 do not.

A bit loud
By Catmom on Dec 27, 2020
I love the design and look of this fountain. However, it’s pretty loud, because it’s a fountain obviously. Just sounds like someone has a faucet running. My husband made small plastic runoffs at the base of each fountain so the water falls just a moment before sliding down the plastic into the base. Much better!

Nice fountain but large and noisy
By Jackie on Dec 16, 2020
Beware: If you have a small apartment like me, this thing will feel huge! It even looks big compared to my cat. Also, you can hear the water fountain from pretty much everywhere in the apartment, so it's definitely not quiet. Because of its size and noise, we decided to only use it when we need to leave the cat alone and use a basic water bowl otherwise.

Cats didn’t use
By Kaylin on Dec 7, 2020
I have multiple cats. One who is constantly asking to drink from the faucet. I thought this fountain would replicate a light stream from the faucet but unfortunately it did not. The stream is light enough but no matter how full the dish is, it always splashes and has a very loud water dribbling noise. My cats wouldn’t go near it. Love that it’s ceramic but the design was not compatible with my cats.

Really nice!
By KarenN on Dec 13, 2020
Our dog and cat really like this fountain. It's heavy enough that the dog can't push it around. It's also short enough that our miniature dachshund can drink out of it. It stays clean longer than our old plastic one. My only complaint is that it's a little loud. It took a couple days for our cat to start using it because he didn't like the noise.
