Questions & Answers

10 Customer Questions

How long should I rinse these filters before using them? It seems if I rinse or don’t rinse these, the water turns gray from the charcoal. I have concerns about the taste, appearance, and health concerns with this charcoal in the water.
Answer by ChewyMay 30, 2018
We recommend a quick rinse before adding it to the fountain. Prolonged rinsing prior to being used in the filter can contribute to extra debris in the water.

How often does the filter need to be changed?
Answer by ChewyJul 17, 2019
These filters should be replaced every 2 to 4 weeks; this helps extend the life of your fountain and pump.

How do I replace the new filter into the fountain?
Answer by ChewyMay 02, 2019
Rinse the charcoal filter thoroughly in cold water to help remove any excess and loose charcoal dust. Once the filter is rinsed off, place inside the filter housing case with the larger side facing down. The filter will only fit inside the case one way, if it does not fit, flip it over. Attach the lid to the filter housing case, press down until you hear it snap in place.

Do these filter work with the Seascape model fountain?
Answer by ChewyMar 12, 2021
This filter is guaranteed to fit the PetSafe® Drinkwell® 1/2 Gallon, 1 Gallon, 2 Gallon, Butterfly, Avalon, Pagoda, Seascape, Sedona, Seaside and Creekside Pet Fountains.

Carbon Leaks Out?

I use the PetSafe fountain, which uses these filters. The fountain came with a filter, and I wasn’t happy that the carbon was in the water basin, but I read that was common with first use. Whatever, that’s fine. But I rinsed it off after a few days while cleaning the fountain, and after that it would leave a black/grey ring after a few days. It kept doing that. I assumed maybe there was something off with that filter, so when I bought these replacements I thought it might be different. I’ve only used one out of the pack, and it kept leaving a ring. Maybe that’s not a big deal though? Should I care? I use filtered water anyway, so I’m trying not using the carbon filter and just using the sponge. I assume the ring isn’t hurting my cat or anything(?) but it’s just kind of annoying.

Defective filters

Opened box of filters and 2 of the 4 are not sealed!! They leaked carbon all over the inside of the packaging. The other 2 are barely sealed, the covering is way off to the side and doesn't look safe. I have used these for years - I love my Drinkwell fountain and so do my cats. The price on these filters has gone up and the quality control no longer exists. I have seen other similar complaints that are recent - looks like they have a problem. What to do? Its the only filter that will fit!!

Great filters, great fountain!

I bought these for my Drinkwell Avalon water fountain. The cats love their fountain (I have had it for several years!) and I love the fact that they are drinking more water than if I just put down a water bowl. When I do periodic cleaning, they all sit around the mat, waiting for me to put it back and fill it. This is a great investment in their health!!

Quality Control Needed

Like one of the reviewers before me, I have noticed that the quality of these filters has deteriorated dramatically. My cat loves her water fountain and I had no issues with these filters from Sep 2021-December 2021. My recent orders have been horrible. These filters fall apart immediately, barely make it to two weeks. Black sludge comes out of the filter into the food. Seems like the company tried a cost saving measure that failed. No issue with the foam filter. I may just use the fountain without the charcoal filter and only use the foam.

4 pack vs 12 pack

4 pack great 12 pack bad. The pack is the real deal and last. The 12 pack are knock offs and last for about a week MAYBE. That's why 12 cost $3 more than 4. Don't buy the 12 pack. Not worth it!!!!

now... early 2021 to early 2022, (not like previous years) Charcoal Filters are Too Cheaply Made. SO THIN, ALL & EVERY ONE, from my last 2 orders LOOK POORLY SECURED AT least one side. LOOK LIKE THEY WERE PULLED TO FIT, MAKING SOME AREAS APPEAR SO VERY THIN I CAN SEE THE INDIVIDUAL STRIPS IN THE WEAVE, thus NO WEAVE. THEY ARE NOW made to fail. AND THEY DO. FAIL. MY 2 CATS & I LOVE THE FOUNTAIN. TODAY I SAW THE YOUNGER CAT (A FIRST FOR HER,) DRINKING FROM TOILET. THAT"S IT FOR ME. I HAD VERY RECENTLY CHANGED OUT ELEC Plug in AND & Underwater "Motor", they are good quality and have re-energized the flow to Good old Normal Times. But the FILTERS "STILL" FAIL IN LESS THAN A WEEK. I found some apparently better quality FILTERS on another site but will loose my free shipping. I have been a total kitty needs from you for 7 years. MAJOR BUMMER.

filter for Pagoda fountain

To my knowledge, these are the only filters that fit the decorative Pagoda fountain that my two cats love.

Filtered Water + Foam Filter = NO Charcoal Filter

Use these fountains without the charcoal filter and just use the Foam Filters that catch any cat hair, food particles, etc. from getting stuck in the pump. I already use filtered water anyways on my Seascape fountain, and the water stays cleaner much longer and no longer are there gray lines that form on the edges of the fountain from the charcoal filter. The charcoal filters create more problems than they help. Use filtered water and this eliminates the need for charcoal filters.

Good filters

Easy to rinse and install in the Drinkwell Avalon fountain. Haven’t had any problems with carbon leaching out.
