could birds ever be trapped under the dome?

Droll Yankees has not had any complaints regarding birds getting trapped in the Dorothy Cardinal Feeder. It is safe for birds to use.
can the height of the dome be adjusted to bring it closer to the tray?

The height of the dome can be adjusted. In order to adjust the dome up or down, all you would need to do is adjust the collar and set screw that you would have on the rod. Please refer to the instructions in the photo.

#1 feeder for songbirds

Mine is 12 years old and it is the birds favorite. The new one is a gift for them in spring. More feeders, more birds, more joy.

Don't listen to nay sayers

This is great I have several and no rust, no falling apart. Yes you will get a squirrel now and then but I feed them too. Really cool to watch them up close, the lil chipmunk too. Few products don't have a flaw or 2 but this is a great product and perfect for birdwatching

Great feeder

The last clear acrylic feeders I have used are no longer available so I found this cardinal feeder as I researched options. This feeder is larger than others I have had in the past, and I’m really enjoying feeding more birds. The feeder is adjustable and it’s worth taking some time before filling with seed to adjust to the right height.

The Good and the Bad

Pros: Handsome, light, adjustable, clear view all around. Cons: Rubber collar w/set screw won't last long, bottom attachments will rust and make disassembly destructive.

Birdersphotos

Poorly constructed. Metal support screws into plastic base ‘nut’ can’t tighten. Entire feeder wobbles won’t stand up straight. Requested refund.

Squirrel help

I have had the dome bird feeder for a number of years . If a squirrel gets on top he catches his front feet on the feeder tray and can get into the feeder part. I think if you made the top at least two inches wider he would not be able to catch on with his front feet. Other than that the feeder is great.
