Good product but wondering why the formula change?
Answer by ChewyMar 16, 2020
Due to increasing demand for recipes with no chickpeas, peas or other legumes, Midwestern Pet Foods updated this recipe. This nutritious, heart-healthy recipe now features fresh turkey with a slow-smoked taste in addition to the turkey meal.

Where are the ingredients sourced?
Answer by ChewyDec 15, 2017
Earthborn Holistic sources all ingredients from US suppliers if ingredients are available, grown or produced in the US. All ingredients in Earthborn Holistic dry pet food are grown or produced in the US except for lamb meal which comes from Australia or New Zealand, tapioca which comes from South Am erica, flaxseed which comes from Canada and krill meal which comes from Antarctica. Their products and ingredients are ethoxyquin-free. Their vitamin premixes are formulated, sourced and blended in the United States by a US company in a human grade facility. Certain subparts of the vitamin premixes are only available overseas. Their US supplier assures us that they make every effort to source from reputable non-Chinese vendors. All these ingredients are thoroughly tested and undergo many quality checks to insure safety and that specifications are met. But even with these checks in place, it is difficult if not impossible to say that some subpart of some vitamin ingredient may originate in China. Earthborn feels that it is unethical to claim that even though their vitamins and minerals are formulated, sourced and blended by a US company in the United States that there could not be a trace or subpart of a vitamin that comes from China. The turkey and chicken in the Primitive Natural is sourced from the US.

Quality is no longer consistent

My dog has some food sensitivities so I spent a long time trying to find a limited-ingredient food that agreed with him. This brand was awesome until the last few months and after reading some of the other reviews I can see it's not just a fluke. We opened a new bag today and I tried to give Petey dinner, he took 2 bites and refused to eat any more. Petey is not a picky eater, he is an absolute pig and will normally eat all food in sight if possible. So if he doesn't want it there is definitely something wrong. Thankfully we had another bag on hand and after comparing the 2 I can see and smell a big difference - the bad food smells super strong (like rancid oil) and has a really gritty texture like it was all from the bottom of the bag. I gave Petey a bowl of food from the second bag and he inhaled it without question. If this was the first time this had happened I would say it's just bad luck but this is the second time in 3 months. I think I will be switching to a brand that does better quality control.

Smells bad

Thought I'd upgrade to "healthier" and I guess I should have looked at some of the more recent reviews because our bag came and definitely smelled off. But I ordered a big bag by accident so I mixed in with their old food and now I'm concerned my dog is having reactions. Complained to chewy but haven't heard back. Very upset I wasted money

Soft Stool Central

I bought a small bag of this food and my dog did well on it. I purchased a second bag and his stools are way too soft. Not sure what the problem is. I think it may be the probiotics on the kibble and that it gets too concentrated on the kibble causing stools that are way too soft. I did read other reviews stating the smell was off. I can't speak to that because I didn't buy enough bags of it. I have switched to a limited ingredient food that does not use probiotics. So far so good!

Something changed

We've been feeding our dog the Venture limited ingredient smoked turkey and butternut squash and the most recent bags smell like chemical and our dog won't eat it. Chewy is sending us 4 new bags but I'm concerned those are going to be the same and we are going to have to find a new brand of food for our dog.

something changed

I have been buying this food for my dog, for almost two years. I recently had my auto shop order come in and the food smelled like rancid play dough, my dog would not touch it. I reached out to chewy (they were great) and shared this information. They sent another bag. This bag same smell and look ( dog won’t touch it) . They sent sent two more smaller bags ( same horrid smell and look) , dog won’t touch it. Either something happened at the manufacturer or the recipe has changed. Really disappointed, I will have to find a new food for my dog, who has horrible allergies. And I’m out 80$. This literally stinks Adding a photo . The circled is the new food I received and it’s obviously a different shape and texture.

Other Reviewers Were Right

My Vizsla has food allergies to everything and I mean literally everything. I should be cooking her food, but I simply don’t have the time. I was excited to try this one because it only had a couple ingredients further down the list that the was sensitive to vs. the 5-10+ in most other foods. I should’ve listened to the other recent reviews though. The food smells absolutely rancid and my girl won’t eat it. She’s not a picky eater, so it’s definitely spoiled. Complete waste of $90. Get your quality and consistency together, Earthbound.

No Longer Recommend

I was first drawn to the Venture Dog Food because of the limited ingredients. I have purchased this brand of dog food in various flavors for at least a couple of years, maybe more. Though, I wasn’t completely comfortable with all of the ingredients, such as the sunflower oil and natural flavors, this dog food seemed to be one of the best and according to the price-it well should be. The problems with this food began for me in September 2022. I noticed about half way through the bag that it had obtained an off odor, like the oil had become rancid. I threw the rest of the bag out and ordered another. The bag I received in October was great, smelled as it should. Rusty ate it as usual. The November order was horrible! I could smell it before I opened the Chewy box. I contacted Chewy and they sent another bag. It wasn’t as bad as the previous bag, but definitely not something I wanted to feed my dog. I contacted Chewy, they issued a refund and I ordered Acana Single instead. When I called Chewy, I was given what I thought was the phone number of the manufacturer, but it turned out it was the distribution warehouse. I explained my situation and asked if their warehouse was climate controlled. It is not. The person I spoke with at the warehouse gave me the phone number of the manufacturer. I called the manufacturer and again explained the situation. I was given an apology, was told that they third party test each batch and that everything was fine. I then asked more direct questions and found out that the rancid oil has been an ongoing problem that they are working on it. I’m not sure if the problem is that the manufacturer is using rancid oil to begin with or if the dog food has been exposed to high heat for a prolonged period of time. Sunflower oil is not a stable oil and is highly processed, which makes it not good for people or animals. Coconut oil would be a much healthier choice. But my question is, why hasn’t this dog food not been pulled and a solution been achieved? Because of the on going problems with this food, I would recommend finding a different brand.

my dog loves this!

My dog really enjoys this dog food when mixed with water to soften it. She is a small yorkie with a lot of food sensitivities and allergies. Highly recommend.
