Smells so bad
I've bought hemp pet bedding before and it never had a bad smell. This brand is terrible!! The guinea pig is in an open area and it smells like a Willie Nelson concert in there. I read the other reviews and decided to take a chance. But never again. The smell is so strong I'm worried my kids will go to school and child services will show up at my house. Its also a pretty small bag of bedding for the price compared to other kinds of bedding. Overall just a bizarre product, especially compared to other hemp bedding I've bought before.
This used to be my favorite...
For a few months I was really enjoying using this bedding with my 12 rats. It controlled odor well, had little dust, barely smelled like anything except maybe grass, and was overall just awesome! About 2 months ago the batches started coming in a little more dusty, but more noticeably they started smelling more like actual Marijuana. I'm sure this is harmless, but it's not a smell that blends well with rat feces. I'm now on the hunt again for another brand until I can be sure the quality of this product is back to what it used to be.
Good with some caution
I used this for my rats for their main substrate but use something else in their litterboxes which they are pretty good at using. I like this litter but have a few issues. It's very absorbent, controls odor very well, especially when compared to paper. It's fairly soft, they like to rummage in it. When I spilled water on it, it absorbed better than most litters would. The amount of dust varied greatly by batch. Some batches were very dusty with clouds billowing up when pouring, others batches were ok. The latest batch came with some greener bits where all others had been completely tan. This batch also had a distinct hemp/skunky smell if you know what I mean, which visitors may have eyebrows raise when walking by the cage. This batch also induced severe sneezing and sniffly noses in my rats in 2 different cages to the point I had to remove it completely and put fabric in. The rats almost immediately stopped sneezing the next day. With this being said, it seems there may be some quality control issues between batches. I really wanted to keep using it, I'm happy with recyclable packaging, odor and moisture absorbing was excellent, but my rats are sensitive enough, I probably will stop using it since I don't want to induce a respiratory infection. It's a shame because it can be hard finding a good substrate. May change to fabric in general and provide a dig box for enrichment.
Great bedding for smaller spaces
We have a large run and coop so we opted to use the bedding in their nests. Pros: -Dust free -Soft for my chicken bums -Scoops easily…you lose less bedding when scooping out the poop compared to pine shavings -Environmentally friendly bag and product -Doesn’t stick to my clothes like pine shavings Drawbacks: -Pricey for large coops and runs. It would take about 5 bags to cover all the spaces we have.
We LOVED this bedding for our indoor chicks. It cut down on the smell significantly, and needed to be changed less frequently than other bedding we’ve used. We would highly recommend using it!
Not absorbent enough for my guinea pigs
I have two boar guinea pigs and change their litter every 4-5 days, so I use quite a bit. This product appealed to me because I thought it would compost better than paper litter. Although this product smells nice, it is not nearly as absorbent as paper, and the urine went straight through to my coroplast and ruined it. I have successfully used it as a top layer of litter, with paper for absorption underneath, but I don't really like maintaining and storing two different kinds of litter, so I will be going back to using just paper. I purchased at least 6 bags of this product and found them to be very consistent.
bedding for rabbit
By far the best bedding I am using for my pet rabbit. No dust and it keeps urine etc from smelling. I wish it would come in larger containers. Love that stuff and so does my rabbit!!!!
Will update with more time
Bought this for my two rats with respritory problems as I was at a loss and have tried so many beddings. It arrived today I noticed a little bit of dust so I shook it out and tried running a few damp towels through it as I am trying to be overly cautious. So far, as expected it does have a quite strong smell but you do get used to it fairly quickly. I did mix it with a bit of shredded paper to hold form a bit more if they dig. And I would recommend to mix it with another bedding if you have small animals that want to tunnel like mice or hamsters to hold their burrows as this is thin and won't hold well. Overall no problems and I'm noticing less sneezing already hopefully this bedding will stick and continue to help my rats.
Awesome bedding for me rats!
I have been switching between beddings recently trying to find a good one for rats, and this is the one! When I put it in their cage it had like one spec of dust and that was it! So it's awesome because it's not dusty, it's super soft, and it doesn't have a strong smell, and last but not least it holds up in the cage super well with odor! 10/10
Okay, not for me
So I bought hemp just to try it out and see if I’d like it more than the paper i was using at the time. It definitely functions well enough, and is safe for my rat girls, but it doesn’t hold shape well enough for them to burrow as much as I would like. Also it has a very distinctive smell— not bad, but definitely overpowering if you’re near the open bag. Plus side is it is VERY easy to notice spoiled bedding, as it gets significantly darker once soaked. Hasn’t been the best for me, but it might work well for you!
